THE MIRROR OF TIME As we, the seniors of ’51, prepare to leave our alma mater, we pause to look back- ward to the Mirror of Time,” to record some of our happy times in Axton High, In the fall of ’47 fifty four timid, but proud freshmen took their seats in assembly with the rest of the high school pupils. Later we went to our home rooms with Mrs. P. H. Barker and Mrs. Mary Bryan as sponsors and Mr. R. V. Long as principal. The changing of classes brought much confusion as it was new to us. Our sophomore year started out with only forty live students under the sponsor- ship of Mrs. O. W. Hairfield and had as our new principal Mr. M. B. Duling. Among the new members were Angeline Minter, Nancy Wells, Frances Swanson, Buford Ashby and Bill Moore. By the time we had reached our junior year our class had decreased to thirty two and we had another new principal, Mr. O. E. Pilson. Our class sponsored by Miss Betty Lou Stratton had as its officers Vera McGuire as president; David Eanes, vice president; and Nancy Walls, secretary and treasurer. In January Doris Garrett quit school and became Mrs. Jamie Turner. On March 2, the Juniors sponsored a minstrel, Southern Hospitality” in order to raise money to carry the Seniors on a trip. Another interesting event for the Juniors was Junior Day” held at Fieldale. In March the Juniors received their long awaited class rings. Barbara Pace enjoyed a trip to Lynchburg where she won a medal in the literary events for prose reading. September 3, 1950, brought us back to dear old Axton with pleasant thoughts. We found our number had again decreased to thirty. Miss Betty Lou Stratton was our sponsor and Mr. O. E. Pilson principal, with David Eanes president, Barbara Pace vice president, Nancy Garrett secretary and Josephine Howerton treasurer. In the summer Nancy Wells had become Mrs. Aubrey Cole. We also found that Milton Wray, one of our classmates had joined the armed forces. The Senior s were busy ordering their calling cards and in November a meeting was held and a newspaper staff was elected. On December 1st the Senior class presented a three act play Lights Out,” directed by Miss Margaret Holland. January came and brought the usual worries about examinations. On February 16 , all county high school seniors journeyed to Bassett for annual Senior Day.” The Seniors sponsored a beauty contest in April to help pay the expenses for a trip to Washington. In May the Juniors pleasantly entertained the Seniors on a trip. The last of May brought, again, the worries over examinations. Tcnight, our class night, as we say adieu to our fellow classmates and friends, the Mirror of Time” grows dim as we look toward new horizons.

THROUGH THE YEAR Sept. 5 — Back in school again, but it won’t be at all dull, because there is a new man on the faculty. Sept. 22-23— The Axton Fair came along with pies and cakes being donated by the Home Economics girls. Sept. 20 — First basketball game of the season at Stuart. Oct. 10 — Senior Glass elected officers, colors, flowers, and motto. Oct. 23 — Started practicing Senior play. Oct. 26 — A juggler put on an act here. Nov. H-21 — Book Week. Mrs. Turner and a group of students had a radio pro- gram over WMVA. Nov. 17— Some of the students attended the Marine Band in Martinsville. December 1 — Senior Play. Dec. 5 — Girls and boys won basketball game at Climax. Dec. 15— F.F.A. and F.H.A. had Christmas Party. Dec. 20 — Out for Christmas holidays. Oh! Boy! Jan. 3 — Back again after joyous Xmas. Jan. 15-22 — Review for exams. Jan. 23-25 — Gosh! Exams and more exams. Feb. 5 — Beginning to practice 1-act play. Feb. 16 — Senior Day. Feb. 16 — F.F.A.-F.H.A.’s Mother-Daughter, Father-Son Banquet. March 9—1 -act plays at Critz. March 23 — Literary Contests at Spencer. April 6 — -Beauty Contest sponsored by Seniors. May 2 5— Seniors take trip to Washington. May 22-28 — Review for exams. May 29-31— Final exams, Wonder if I passed?” June 3— Baccalaureate Service. June 4 — Commencement exercises.
