Endeavoring to carry on the task set before it by past classes, the Axtonion Staff of 1951 has worked hard to represent the various organizations and members of our school impartially and with the most interest possible. Many of the staff members received training in 195 0 as Junior representatives on the staff. Because of the valuable training it gives the oncoming staff members, this plan has again been successfully used this year. It is to the art editor that the Axtonion pays appreciation for the many varied sketches, including the sketch of our school inside the covers. To the advisor, sincere gratitude for all her time, thought, and effort, is ex- tended. The staff hopes that this annual in the role of a permanent record will be of interest not only to those engaged in training, but also to those interested in high school work. It is the earnest wish that this volume will carry on the spirit of Axton High School. THE MIRROR OF TIME As we, the seniors of ’51, prepare to leave our alma mater, we pause to look back- ward to the Mirror of Time,” to record some of our happy times in Axton High, In the fall of ’47 fifty four timid, but proud freshmen took their seats in assembly with the rest of the high school pupils. Later we went to our home rooms with Mrs. P. H. Barker and Mrs. Mary Bryan as sponsors and Mr. R. V. Long as principal. The changing of classes brought much confusion as it was new to us. Our sophomore year started out with only forty live students under the sponsor- ship of Mrs. O. W. Hairfield and had as our new principal Mr. M. B. Duling. Among the new members were Angeline Minter, Nancy Wells, Frances Swanson, Buford Ashby and Bill Moore. By the time we had reached our junior year our class had decreased to thirty two and we had another new principal, Mr. O. E. Pilson. Our class sponsored by Miss Betty Lou Stratton had as its officers Vera McGuire as president; David Eanes, vice president; and Nancy Walls, secretary and treasurer. In January Doris Garrett quit school and became Mrs. Jamie Turner. On March 2, the Juniors sponsored a minstrel, Southern Hospitality” in order to raise money to carry the Seniors on a trip. Another interesting event for the Juniors was Junior Day” held at Fieldale. In March the Juniors received their long awaited class rings. Barbara Pace enjoyed a trip to Lynchburg where she won a medal in the literary events for prose reading. September 3, 1950, brought us back to dear old Axton with pleasant thoughts. We found our number had again decreased to thirty. Miss Betty Lou Stratton was our sponsor and Mr. O. E. Pilson principal, with David Eanes president, Barbara Pace vice president, Nancy Garrett secretary and Josephine Howerton treasurer. In the summer Nancy Wells had become Mrs. Aubrey Cole. We also found that Milton Wray, one of our classmates had joined the armed forces. The Senior s were busy ordering their calling cards and in November a meeting was held and a newspaper staff was elected. On December 1st the Senior class presented a three act play Lights Out,” directed by Miss Margaret Holland. January came and brought the usual worries about examinations. On February 16 , all county high school seniors journeyed to Bassett for annual Senior Day.” The Seniors sponsored a beauty contest in April to help pay the expenses for a trip to Washington. In May the Juniors pleasantly entertained the Seniors on a trip. The last of May brought, again, the worries over examinations. Tcnight, our class night, as we say adieu to our fellow classmates and friends, the Mirror of Time” grows dim as we look toward new horizons. A group which has really added to school life improvement is the safety patrol which was organized in 1949, under the leadership of Mr. R. A. Tavenner. Many of the members were on last year’s patrol, but most of them were chosen from the student body of 1951, by the high school faculty and bus drivers. The main duty of the safety patrol is to insure the safety of pupils. Some of the minor duties are to see that school rules are enforced and school property is taken care of. Left to right — Janet Marlowe, Betty Dulaney, Katie Marshall, Dorothy ' Williams, Sandra Reynolds, Lucy Wells, Vera McGuire, Louella Lawhorne. The cheerleaders of A. H. S. really add the finishing touch to the school’s many basketball and baseball games. Some of the girls were members of last year’s cheer- leading group, but many of them were chosen from the newly added eighth grade. The girls have many cheers which the student body thrills to, but they are especially fond of this one: Beat me daddy, eight to the bar, A. H. S. has gone mighty far. Swing me daddy to the boogie beat. Come on team, you’re all reet. BOYS BASKETBALL Standing — Mr. Pilson, Frank Payne, Paul Moore, Ronald Mountcastle, Oliver Carter, Ralph Moore, Lynwood Riddle. Kneeling — Dennis Marlowe, Nelson Eanes, Ted Barrow, David Eanes, Clifton Clark. The beginning of the basketball season of ’50 brought many hopes and desires from our boys’ team as to the possibilities of winning the county championship. To bring about this accomplishment would be a hard task for the team because they had pretty stiff competition from the other schools in the county, but the experience and leader- ship of their coach, Mr. O. E. Pilson helped them achieve their goal. The trophy was awarded to the captain, Ted Barrow, on December 5, at the Fieldale Gymnasium by Mr. Fairbanks, principal of Spencer-Penn High School. Ted Barrow and David Eanes were fortunate in being chosen as outstanding players on the all-star team. Ted won a silver miniature basketball for being best offensive player in the county. GIRLS BASKETBALL Standing — Eunice McDaniels, Helen Lawerence, Lois Ashby, Miss Stratton, Josephine Howerton, Mary Durham, Janice Wyatt. Kneeling — Mary Grimes, Beatrice Branch, Dolly Rumley, Barbara Pace, Virginia Eanes, Frances Holland. Coached by Miss Betty Lou Stratton, the girls’ team was not so fortunate as the boys, but for the first time in four years, they chalked up a victory for the team. Although the girls failed in winning any league games, they succeeded in showing good sportsmanship and friendliness toward their opponents. Dolly Rumley was chosen as one of the best forwards in the county, to be on the all-star team. BASEBALL First row — David Eanes, Jimmy Robertson, Clifton Clark, Dennis Marlowe, Oliver Carter, Maynard Shelton. Second row — Larry Holly, Maxwell Kendall, Sonny Lees, James Burchell. Third row — Jimmy Wall, Frank Payne, R. A. Tavenner, Lynwood Riddle, Jimmy Martin. Although R. A. Tavenner’s baseball team was minus several of last year’s players and new inexperienced boys took the places of those graduated from the team, that did not keep them from trying their best to win. With two of the most reliable pitchers being gone, Mr. Tavenner found new talent to fill their places also. The members of the team with their playing ability and sportsmanship had a successful playing season. SOFTBALL Top row — Beatrice Branch, Lois Ashby, Louella Lawhorne, Dolly Rumley, Marilyn Wilson. Second row — Mary Starling, Lorene Wyatt, Frances Holland, Doris Earles, Ilene Barker, Eunice McDaniel, Irene Barker. First row — Margaret Gravely, Ernestine Flippen, Abbie Gauldin, Barbara Pace, Virginia Eanes, Mary Grimes, Miss Neva Brankley. Seated — Marybelle Durham. Organized in ’49, the girls’ softball team, coached by Miss Neva Brankly had a trying time in overcoming county competition in the seasons following their organi- zation, but cooperation of the members of the team and coach has made softball one of the outstanding sports to participate in. F F. A. Background — David Eanes, Frank Payne, Jimmy Robertson, William Carter, Claude Riggan, Donald Joyce, Joseph Hankins, Leonard Bates, Jerry Roach, Jimmie Martin, Lynwood Riddle. Foregroiind — Maxwell Kendall, Bobby Ashby, James Burchell, Tommy Jones, Maynard Shelton, Mr. Tavenner, Oliver Carter, Donald Eanes, Sonny Lees. The F.F.A. Chapter is one of the oldest and best known organizations for boys in Axton. The organization was established for boys studying vocational agriculture who are planning to become future farmers. The boys in the F.F.A. have a wide varietv of activities. They have been the means of improving the school grounds and buildings. Only last fall they laid pipe and sewer lines for the new shop and agriculture building. They have, in the past, made many improvements to make our school a better one. However, there is not outdoor work all the time, for there is much information to be obtained pertaining to farm jobs. For example, there is forestry, dairy judging and public speaking contests to participate in. The new shop, which was completed in early 1950, offers unlimited opportunities for woodwork, welding, blacksmithing, etc. This is an organization that certaiAly is both highly educational and beneficial to all farm youth. !1 F.H.A. The Future Homemakers of America (F.H.A.), one of the oldest active organiza- tions in our school, is a club for eligible home economics students. This being a national organization, the club feels very proud in being an affiliated chapter. The chapters of Henry County and our adjoining Patrick County combine to make the Patrick Henry Federation. We feel very fortunate in having the president, Dolly Rumley a member of our chapter. The b asis of our organization being the home, we try to center all our activities around it. At the beginning of each year, we plan a program of work which includes activities such as improving home relationships, conducting Red Cross Drives, redecorating the cottage, social activiteis, attending the F.H.A. Camp and representing our chapter at the state convention. The united cooperation of the girls has made the accomplishment of these goals possible in the past. GIRLS CHORUS First row — Dean Lynch, Barbara Hardy, Rachel Eanes, Nancy Cole, Mrs. Turner, Lucille Harbour, Katie Marshall, Sally Washburn, Janice Wyatt. Fifth row — Vera McGuire, Barbara Pace, Lucy Wells, Sandra Reynolds, Nancy Garrett, Doris Earles, Janet Marlowe, Kay Thompson, Martha Minter. The Girls’ Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Eleanor Turner, is one of the most outstanding organizations of our alma mater. Having been established in 1946, by our present sponsor, the chorus has endeavored to reach higher standards in music each year. The group presents special music on various occasions and annually attends the district music festival, where they usually attain honors. Each year, the financial necessities of the chorus are derived from the cooperation of the girls in numerous activities. The chorus is made up of girls from the eighth grade through high school. All members consider it an honor to belong to this group. Standing — Margaret Gravely, Soph. Reporter; Martha Minter, Senior Reporter; Betty Dulaney Eighth Grade Reporter; Louise Lavendar, Typist; Janet Marlowe, Eighth Grade Reporter; Shirley Davis, Junior Reporter; Miss Holland, Advisor. Striving for better and more enjoyable school life, students interested in publishing a school paper held a meeting under the direction of Miss Holland, and from their midst, elected a staff of members to establish, compose, and publish bi-monthly editions. A contest was held for the purpose of naming the paper, and from a number of extremely interesting entries, the staff finally chose The Bullet” as the official name which was contributed by a seventh grader. Although it is one of the newes t organizations in school, it has been accepted wholeheartedly by the faculty and student body as one of the necessities to enlighten the monotony of school activities. The staff members have worked hard to make the paper as successful as possible and sincerely appreciate the cooperation of students and teachers. The members of The Bullet” Staff also wish to thank their sponsor. Miss Margaret Holland, for her never failing leadership and advice in making the paper an overwhelming success. SNAPSHOTS 1. VIRGINIA THERE S NO INFLATION IN THE PRICE OF SUCCESS To be successful, we must realize one thing: All good things must be paid for in some manner. In life, very little is returned without effort. You must pay in dollars and cents for the things you get— your food, your business, mainten- ance and your family. You must also pay for any degree of success that you have or hope to attain in business. Are you ready to make those payments? First, you must have the desire to succeed. The greater your desire, the greater will be your success. To the Class of 1951, we exhort you to take an inventory together to see how much you want to succeed. E. L DU PONT DE NEMOURS « CO., INC.
