FIRST CLASS PASSENGERS f X fy ff! 3 The first class passenqers aboard the luxury liner could look back over their :iiqh school career and nod their heads in aareernent that their years on the SS. Avonworth had been filled with rnany good tirnes and with the qatherinq of rnuch knowledge. Qur freshmen year found the Erns- worth and Ben Avon ninth grades united for the first time. Under the leadership of Carlotta Brigham, we held our first class dance, the Spring Fiesta , in the Ems' worth qyrn. Gur victorious Junior hiqh basketball team that year qave us a qlirnpse of things to come. As we entered the tenth grade, we chose Charlton Carpenter as the president of the class. This year proved to be our money-rnakinq year as we sold pictures of basketball players, held dances and sl-Latina parties. For the first time niern- bers of the class played a sianificant part 1:1 the dramatic productions. This year x roved even rnore notable as we received Jig: class rings in tire spring ratzrer than unirtiria until our senior year. foncludinq a successful year, we passed from the wisdorn of the sophornoric rrqe to that of the Junior year. Iohn Koehler This year, the Student Council once again proved its value as a sounding board for student opinion and for the co-ordination of student activities. The officers of this in- dustrious group were: Bob Utberg, president, Ed Noll, first vice presidentg Bob Wood, sec- ond vice presidentg lohn Koehler, treasurerg and lean Simon, secretary. Mr. Shaffer again served as adviser and sponsor. Early in the year the president appointed a committee to organize various senior and junior high clubs and to schedule them dur- ing the activity period. Among the clubs organized this year for the first time in the junior high were the Boys' and Girls' Sports Clubs and the Science Club. ln order to increase school spirit, the Council built a bonfire and arranged for a pep meeting at the football field the night before the football Secretary Treasurer game with Avalon. The first of the Student Council dances was held in the gym in No- vember. After this, Council dances were held every second Saturday evening with the parents of students serving as sponsors. At the end of each report period the represent- atives gathered the necessary data for the honor roll, a copy of which was sent to each homeroom. During the basketball season a committee of Council members served as ushers at the home games. On March 16th the Student Council held its second annual All-Socrts Banquet, honoring the lettermen in the various sports who did so much to bring glorious victories to Avonworth during the l953-1954 season. After learning the use of the Goren point-count system, the students progressed through other fundamentals of bridge play- ing sbidding, scoring, and the playing of hands. They soon overcame the difficulties of the game and found that they enjoyed playing. Showing signs of improvement un' der the guidance of Miss Clark, a capable sponsor, there was no doubt but that the girls would soon be playing duplicate bridge, With such enthusiastic support from these girls we feel certain that one day they will be excellent bridge players. VARSITY CLUB Varsity Club had a busy time aboard the Luxury Liner. Largely through the efforts of the officers jack Sauer, Wade I-fersperger, Clayton Theophilus, and lock Kennedy, the club was well organized for its program of activities. ln order to present each senior letterman with a jacket, members sold pro- grams for the football games and sponsored a dance after the Avalon basketball game. The boys, along with Mr. McCormick, the sponsor, did much to promote interest in intermurals by running volleyball and ping pong tournaments after basketball season. As usual, one of the highlights of the year was the annual varsity-faculty basketball game which was played at the end of the basketball season. .f IUNIOR VOLUNTEERS Among the extra-curricular activities at Avonworth which do not meet on school time is the junior Volunteer group. Every Saturday morning this group of girls jour- neyed to Sewickley Valley Hospital to help relieve the nurses of some of their work. Car- ing for children, making beds, feeding pa- tients, arranging flowers, and reading to the patients are included in the tasks which the girls perform. By doing this work, not only do the girls see for themselves what a career in nursing involves but they are given an op- portunity to participate voluntarily in a ser- vice project. Under the sponsorship and capable di- rection of Miss Rotzler, the girls deserve much credit for this admirable service. FORENSIC CLUB To debate the topic Resolved: That the president of the United States should be elected by a direct vote of the people fAvon- worth was fortunate to have seven enthus- iastic sophomore debaters. Under the direc- tion of Miss Bravin, these debaters made an impressive record as they participated in tournaments held at Pitt, Edgewood, and North Braddock. For the first time this year the Forensic Club sponsored a tournament at Avonworth in which debaters from five schools participated. ln addition to debating the Forensic Club sponsored an assembly debate program b e t w e e n students from Princeton and Pitt. Thus the Forensic Club concluded a successful year, one of the most successful in its history. Although this was a new type of production for Miss Wilson, the audience received it very well. Highlighting a large cast was Benee Phair in the role of a kind niotherly person who unknowingly rented her spare rooms to a gang of crooks. However, after many exe citing but amusing episodes, the criminals were soon arrested. The members of the cast were Barry Price, Bill Kaiser, Donna Eismont, Sue Bryson, Wade Hersperger, Sally Bryson, Esther Bittner, Larry Turner, Ralph Witherspoon, lim lirnirro, Nancy lean McLean, Mike Mostoller, Pat Collins, and Butch Meader. Behearsals were, as usual, hectic but fun. Nan Duff, Iudy Cormack, and Gretta Carlson, the prompters, had a difficult job getting everyone on stage in time for their cues. When not on stage, most of the cast huddled into corners to struggle with trig, Aristotle, and semantics. During the rush the properties were scattered or lost and lines were forgotten, but when the curtain went up on opening night, everything was well under control. Don Armstrong, lack Capp, Don Turner, Ed Glotfelty, and Fred Stout, :neinbers of the stage crew, built and painted the sets besides creating tlze sound effects. As stage manager, Charlotte Prugh had to see that all the properties were collected and in place before each performance. Due to the lack of time and with more ,activities planned for this year, Miss Wilson 'decided not to have a spring play. As far as we know, the custom of having only one play per year will be continued. However, we will long remember the fine job she and the cast did on Strange Boarders . Avonworth 13 - Zelienople 12 Climaxing three weeks of pre-season practice in record breaking heat, Avonworth traveled to Zelienople for its opening game of the 1953 season. The first half, which ended with the score 13-6, was strictly a defensive game for Avonworth. The second half was quite a different story as Avon- worth's powerful offense began to grind out yardage. lim Huffmyer finally crashed over from two yards out. Sauer added the all- important extra point and the game ended in a tie. Avonworth 26 - Sewickley 0 Playing before a capacity crowd of more than 3,000 local partisans, Avonworth was out to avenge a 13-12 setback the pre- vious year. Avonworth pounded out yard after yard in a series of sustained drives which found the ball pushed over the Se- wickley goal line on four separate occa- sions. lim 1-luffmyer, Avonwortlrs hard charg- ing fullback, turned in a sensational per- formance, highlighted by the scoring of two touchdowns. Avonworth 25 - Bellevue 0 This game, Avonworths second confer- ence tilt, held great importance for both teams. Avonworth showed great determina- tion by turning an early scoring bid by Belle- vue into an Avonworth touchdown. The half- time score read 13-0 following a touchdown on a five yard run by Bob Utberg. The second half was much the same as Avonworth's two stellar running backs, Bob Utberg and lim Huffmyer, each added another touchdown. Avonworth 6 - Leetsdale 0 This was the game of the year. lt was all or nothing for both teams who by now were the main contenders for the coveted O.V.C. championship. The only score of the game came on a pass to Avonworth's big 6' 3 end lack Sauer. Late in the second half Leetsdale recovered a blocked punt on the Avonworth two yard line. A solid eight man line held for four straight downs. Sur- prisingly, Avonworth outgained the oppo- sition 182 yards to 77 yards. Avonworth 6 - Neville 0 ln this garne Avonworth's defense could not be penetrated but on the other hand. their offense was slow in starting to roll. Bob Utberg, who averaged 6.5 yards per try that night, scampered 20 yards around left end on the first play of the fourth quarter to break the scoreless deadlock. Neville never got inside the Avonworth 30 yard stripe all evening. The games ended with Avonworth on the Neville two yard line with first and goal to go. .V.C. CHAMPIONS Avonworth 41 - Avalon 6 lmrriediately after the opening kickoff, Avonwortn marched all the way for the score that paved'the way to the highest Avon- worth scote in hlstory. Avalon appeared to be no match for Avonworth that night. lock Kengjedf Chuck Carpenter, Bob Utberg, it-eve Slevens, and lim Huffmyer all shared irfthefsconirig honors. A fumble set up the valon touchdown in the fourth quarter thus mgingto an end 21 quarters of scoreless ploy. ' n ' 'Avonworth 7 - Freedom 6 A cold, windy night and a huge Free dom team were the two obstacles Avonworth had to overcome in this Class A exhibition game. Avonworths line which averaged 188 lbs. per man was badly outweighed. The halftime score read 6-O. During the sec- ond half Avonworths offense began to Click and the whole complexion of the game changed. The lead changed hands when lim Huffmyer passed 15 yards to Chuck Carpenter in the end zone. lack Sauer booted the extra point and Avonworth went name with a hardefougnt victory. Avonworth 13 - Edgewood 7 An Avonworth victory here meant the first undefeated season in five years: morale was running high. As the game progressed, it was clear that Avonworth wasn't up to its usual standards while Edgewood was playing inspired football. Edgewood led 7-6 with less than three minutes remaining. A 55 yard pass play setup the winning touch- down on the Edgewood three yard line. Three downs later lim Huffmyer crashed over guard for the score. On Dormont High Schools neutral floor they trimmed Mid- way by the score of 70-44. The next playoff game was against highly-favored Wampum. This game turned out to be one of the most spectacular games both in Avonworth and in WPIAL history as the underdog Avon- worth five overwhelmed Wampum by the score of 86-55. This victory entitled the Ante- lopes to play in the semi-finals at the Pitt field-house. Here they met a tall and ex- perienced Sharpsburg team. A huge crowd saw the Antelopes come from behind to win by a score of 48-39. The next game was the final with high ranking lrwin at the field- house. Due to Avonworths spectacular showings in the three preceeding games the final was rated almost a tossup by most oddsmakers. Avonworth led 29-25 at half- time. The second half was quite a different story as lrwin promptly went ahead and kept increasing their margin till the end. Thus ended one of the greatest basketball seasons in the history of Avonworth. Pomeroy I Ham ' n E I R Fs V r GOLF An experienced and talented Avonwortn golf squad won six matches while dropping only one in regular league competition last year. ln an effort to take the section cham- pionship, they lost a playoff match to West View on a neutral course. Throughout this season, the number one position was held by Wade Hersperger, with lock Kennedy, Kif Knight, Steve Stevens, and Ionn Stitt round- ing out the first five. ln post season play Wade, Kif, and lock qualified for the WPIAL individual competition tournament. Out of a field of sixty original participants, Wade placed second, Kif, e l e v e n t h, and lock, twenty-first. With four of the first five men returning again this year, Avonworth is anti- cipating another successful golf season. SOFTBALL A program of intra-mural softball was started last spring to replace Avonworth's traditional varsity baseball program which until then had been held every year. How- ever, due to the lack of interest on the part of the boys and to the condition of uniforms, baseball was dropped. Under the direction of Mr. Stroup, four boys from the Varsity Club were chosen to be captains of the teams. The captains, l-larry Fischer, Clay Theophilus, Vic Iones, and lim Huffmyer, picked four teams out of those in the student body who wished to participate. Each team played a total of six games. Competition was keen, but the box score tabulation showed that Harry Fischer's team came in first, thus winning the intra-mural trophy of 1953, which was presented at the Awards Day program, GOLF First row, l. to r.: K.
