Freshman-activities started at our first homeroom, when, under the direction of Mr. Hallman and Mrs. King, the following officers were elected: president, Harold Moore, vice-president, Bill Bowman, secretary, Jerry Tomy treasurer, Frances Bohlmang and student council representatives, Helen Ward, Bennie Forbush, Carol Laing, and Don Stephens. Our nominee for nueen of the Fall Festival was Carlene Funck. To make our treasury worthy of the name, we operated the Little Store under the guidance of our advisors. Dur- ing this vear blue and white were chosen for our class colors. Our most success- ful undertaking as freshmen was the production of the musical comedy, NMiss Atar1ivht.W In our sophomore year, under the guidance of Mr. Hallman and Mrs. Price, we elected as officers: president, Jack Ferguson: V1Ce'P1 8B1dS1'1f-1 Melka KGFGTISKHS secretary, Jerry Tom: and treasurer, Theira Cooper. Our nominee for the king of the Fall Festival was Bill Bowman: for lady-in-waiting, Theresa Rattle. We took our first step toward being nupper-classmenn when we initiated the freshmen in the fall. The first dance of our high school years was held in the spring with decorations in the Oriental theme. As juniors, under the supervision of Mrs. Posey and Mrs. Douglas, the fol- lowing officers were elected: president, Carol Laing: vice-president, Jack Fer- guson: secretary, Jerry Tom: and treasurer, Opal Sheehy. Our candidates, Melka Kerensky and Larry Gross, were elected queen and escort of the Fall Festival. Weeks of work were climaxed by our class taking in more money than any other class ever had. Our next activity was the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. During the first part of our junior year we chose as our class motto: nThe elevator to success is not running--take the stairs,u and blue and white carnations as our class flowers. At last the long-awaited day came when excited juniors could proudly show off class rings. The highlight of our junior year was the J-Hop, the theme cf which was WMy Blue Heaven.W Under the direction of Miss Fritz, student director, Frances Bohlman, our junior play WA Great Big Doorstepn was a huge success. Seniors were our guests at the Junior-Senior Banquet at the Rot- unda Inn. Master-of-ceremonies was Jack Ferguson. In conclusion of the year's activities, we juniors honored the seniors in baccalaureate and commencement i . exceqgtgfsst, as'high and mighty seniors, we entered our final year of high school under the supervision of Mrs. Posey and Mr. Spencer. Officers elected for this year were: Dan Taliercio, president: Tom Palmer, vice-president, Jerry Tom, secretary, Opal Sheehy, treasurer, and Bob Boner, Margaret Elkins, and Jim Gurd, student council representatives., After the selection of our senior trip, money-making projects were undertaken in earnest. Among these were magazine sales, the sale of Christmas trees, the sale of cup cakes, record dances, and paper drives. High acclaim was given the first play in our new high school, our senior production, nGrowing Pains,n directed by Mrs. MacCreery, student director Jerry Tom. In May. our senior trip lived up to our highest expectations. The climax or our social activities was the Senior Prom, 'Thanks for the hemories.n This year we were guests at the Junior-Senior Banquet. During the last week of May caps and gowns were conspicuous on every senior. Baccalaureate and Commen- cement exercises wrote 'finis' to our high school days. Guard Fencers caught Dick Sargent, who is up for stealing an apple from the A R P, cutting his toe-nails with a saw smuggled to him by the prison cook, Frances Bohlman, in a birthday cake. Although lawyer Clata Tompkins pleaded his case well, he was sentenced by Warden Crowellinsky to five days in solitary confinement. Ronnie Dixon, another inmate, is spending fifty years here for falling asleep in his beauty parlor and letting Eddie Campbell cook under the permanent- wave machine. With a slip of the hand, Russell Bowker, the manicurist, cut off Jim Gurd's fingers at the knuckles. While washing Charlie Lewis's hair, Carl Neighbors scalded him, so he too is occupying a cell here. It's really amazing how many of the Class of '52 have gotten together here at Avontraz. Why just the other day I saw June Schledorn, who was sent up for telling jokes in church. She won't be here long, but while she is it will relieve the monotony. June has told us some of the latest gossip about our pals on the outside: Joanne Arteaga and Virginia Bowden are managing a Lonely Hearts Club. Don Baker and Theirs Cooper were two of their first customers and now Don and Theira have gotten together and are busy raising a Baker's dozen. Donna Beacom owns the Red Hot Match Factory, Margaret Elkins glues the heads on the matches: Ethel Keller assembles them in the little boxes: and Delores Pohl drives the delivery truck. Ralph and Robert Kaphengst own a night club in New York City. The star dancing team ls Roberta Palmer and Harold Moore. Peggy Nelson is the head bubble dancer. Jack Grusn1ck's swing band provides the music. Members of the band are: Jim Hulen, flute: Lavonne Crittenden, drums: Lanore Clark, trombone: Marion Hartwig, bassoong and Ken Paulson, chimes. Chuck Williams, the famousfuller-brush salesman, and Peg Starkey, barker at a three- ring circus, who are now Mr. and Mrs.,' almost had their marriage broken up by Jerry-the-Great-Lover-Sullivan, but the tough cop, Dan Taliercio, put an end to the brawl and carted Jerry off to the penitentiary. Another new arrival at the penitentiary is Pat Devereaux, who was caught necking in public with door-to-door salesman Pete Seaton who was demonstrating his Non-Smear Lipstick. Pat's first job here at Avontraz was to help Thelma Denton with the dishes. Thelma is chief-cook-and-bottle-washer. Mrs. Rosey, the official paper boy, just came by with the evening paper. As I opened up the paper, the first headline to catch my eye las, 'Melba Koben- ski Fails Againtn It seems that Melka Kerensky Cstage name Melba Kobenskil attempted to swim the English channel, got two hundred yards from the other side,' remembered she forgot her wrist watch, so she swam back after it. Jack Ferguson makes news by living in millionare row with a harem of twenty. Bennie Forbush has gust been the head judge in the Miss America Beauty contest. Much of the news was about Wayne Jaycox, who is running for President against Don Stebhens. On the comic page is a cartoon drawn by Marge Skosich about the Model T Ford which has made Ray Yokey famous. Another news item was about Joanne Malone who has broken the world's record by writing three hundred words a min- ute in shorthand. Lois Pike and Theresa Rattle are now employed by the U. S. Navy. Lois is postmistress and Theresa a censor. Tom Palmer, the noted scien- tist, has invented a three-wheeled jeep which will go forty-five miles Der hour! These Jeeps are now manufactured in mass production ln Ken Goltry's novelty factory. In the Lost and Found oolum I read: nLost: One of Opal Sheehy's twenty-four children while on march to Bev LaForge and Pat Cannon's nursery. Reading the society pane, I learned that Ida Seeger is in Hawaii trying to learn the hula hula. On the sports page I read that Jerry Sigler is coaching a basket ball team of seven-footers. Carol Laing is his star center and Ella Jean Taylor is water-boy. Glancing through the ads I saw that Kathryn Kramp was urging everyone to come and learn her special roller skating technique. Bob Boner is advertising drastically reduced prices for his services as an undertaker. As I laid aside the paper, I peered between the bars and much to my sur- prise I saw the electric chair operator, Mr. Thaker, marching Helen Ward to the dungeon. She was guilty of setting off her fire crackers two days before the Fourth of Julyl Now it is 7:30--time for lights out, and another long sleepless night of lying here regretting my terrible crime of wearing jeans to baccalaureate for which I have been sentenced to life imprisonment in Avontraz Penitentiary. Calling the chorus in off the tennis court for rehearsals of nMiss Starl1ght.n How old we felt when we initiated the freshmen. The dill pickles we always took on hayrides. Everyone's buying a ticket to our first dance--the Spring Frolic. All our picnics at Cass Lake. The cry of nFingerJn when we were tying up our papers. How excited we all were the night Melka was elected Queen. Sewing clouds for the J-Hop. How long it seemed before our class rings finally came. Riding around in The Jeep all hours of day and night. All the nincriminatingn pictures we took at parties. Going swimming at night after play practice. How 'funnyn it seemed to be a Senior at last. The serenades by the workmen during the first few weeks in the new school. The thrill of the first basketball game in our very own gym. How we lived at school during rehearsals of nGrowlng Pains.' 'Gee, youfre ignorant, you dumb ninny!nand nMam a told me to go sit in the powder room if I wasn't popu1ar.N Thinking that the annual would never be finished. S t b - J 19 l Dear Diary, ep em er une' 5 How priviledged, we the freshman class were to be the first class to begin our four years at Avondale High. Our class consisted of one hundred and twenty-three pupils from the grade schools of Stone, Stiles Elmwood and Auburn Heights. Because of such a large group, we were separated into three homerooms. Our advisors, whom we will never forget, were Mr. Bruno, Mrs. Douglas, Mr. Henline, Mr. Kalinowski, Miss Krueger, and Mr. Schaer. We will never forget Initiation, which followed a short time after the beginning of school. Wasn't it fun dressing up and learning our prayers! Always we will keep in mind the parties we had together at Hallowe'en and Christmas, and those roller skat- ing parties also. What a success our WShamrock Swing' was, our first undertaking in high school. Now we are all anxiously awaiting to start our next school year as Sophomores. The team will loose five seniors this year including our diminutive captain Jerry Sigler, guards Dick Sargent and Jack Ferguson, and forwards Jim Hulen and Ben Forbush. Due to the lack of height the team was not able to compile an outstanding record although they seemed to play best against the league leaders. Last year the track team, under the coaching of Mr. Ed Kalinowski, Avondale placed fourth in the league meet, which incidently was won bv Roseville, In order to earn a letter in track, a person had to win either a first, a second, or a third in a meet.
