Kneelrng Qleft to rnghtj Srd Rnendeau Black Wrllrams Van Ness Mr Durphy Mrller W N Gordon C Reese Wardrop Second Row Cleft to rrghtb R Jones Rrchtmyer Crawford Proctor Cluxton Otto Fawcett Durphey Henschel Schnavettx Ross L Duff Edelen R Duff THE NIMROD CLUB Thrs year has been one of Avons best and the Nrmrod Club Avon s only mdependent and chartered club has 1n keeprng up wlth the rest of the school also been tops Well organized plans and their fulfill ment under the able leadershxp of the Presrdent have led to one of the club s best years Srnce 1ts foundmg rn 1929 the Nrmrod Club has been one of the most rmportant best manned and most helpful organxzatrons at Avon Thrs year was no excep non Beaver Pond as rn the past was the mam center of attractron for the Sunday mornrng work crews The streams flownng rn and out of the pond were all cleaned out and the banks enlarged to allow for clearer water and better hshmg rn the sprmg The pond was agam dramed and serned rn the fall Perhaps the most norrceable xmprovement was the dredgmg and deepemng of the pond by a hired clam shell The srlt on the upper mnddle part of the pond was removed and the gravel and drrt were deposrted ln a long peninsula, whrch stretched the wrdth of the pond The area rn the back of thrs penmsula was deep ened for fxshmg by about 15 feet Thrs penmsula wnll also keep the srlt rn the upper part of the pond from flowmg down rnto the dam area Numerous channels were dug to deepen the pond and marntam the water rn constant flow The cabm recetved a few necessary reparrs the roof on the old cabnn was patched up the prne panehng rn the newest addmon was completed A new wood stove was also added to replace the prevrous faulty and haz ardous gas stove The club thrs year was Indeed fortunate rn havmg two alumm return as masters Mr Leavitt and Mr Mendell of the class of 52 helped a great deal rn the furtherrng of club functrons Mr Leavrtt also helped to start an NRA sanctroned mile team wrthm the club Marksmen Mrller Reese Van Ness andW1ll1ams were grven a chance to show therr skrlls to outsnders as a result and the members were able to make use of the rnfle range and the trap shoot more often The club began its year under the drrectron of Drck Wrllrams as presrdent and Punch Wardrop as vrce presrdent jeff Henschel and Gary Black were treasurer and secretary, respectrvely No ,ob too large or too small defeated the club wrth nts strong leadershrp Never to be forgotten are the great support and msprra non grven to the club and the hard work put mto rt by the faculty advrsor, Mr Durphy, or the wonderful Wednesday meals served by Srd and hrs band of cool1es The club has a wide range of plans for the future Wrth a lot of support from outdoor enthusrasts, rt wrll remarn one of the most rndependent and well organ rzed clubs rn school l 1 l 4 , - I C I .L.. U , . , . , - I , , during which games, those who participated gained a Bogino, Beck, Henschel, and Morrow, as well as Eaton . t ' l I 3 7 ' ' , . . . . , ' 1 - 9 , ' J 9 ' 7 ' 1 ' 124 on the play Before the period ended Monson moved the ball down the field to t1e the game at 7 7 During the second period Andy Murphy moved from the full back slot through the center of the Monson lme bull mg his way to a score The half ended wrth the score in our favor by a 14 7 margin In the second half Avon got its first taste of a team that wouldnt give up The Monson team repeatedly fought its way down the field rolling up two vital touchdowns Avon fatled to tally durmg the second half and thus lost a heart breaking game to Monson Academy 21 14 Parents Weekend was the setting for the Avon Tabor meeting Tabor New England Prep School Champions the year before was expected to provtde strong opposition On a wet and muddy field they overwhelmed the hapless Avon squad Perhaps the lack of reserve strength proved to be the dCC1SlVC fac tor here At any rate Avon suffered its worst defeat in recent years as Tabor piled up a 56 0 score Cranwell was the last game of the season Rlddled by mjurres the team sorely missed the services of Bob Bogrno B111 Davnd and Mike Fawcett who were side lined The game was dlsappomtmg though Corky Cookman and Scott Smith played fine ball Avon dropped its final encounter and closed out the season wrth a record of three losses and no victories But no matter how the season turned out the team has a lot to be proud of The boys have demonstrated ability and though it will involve a lot of hard work they should make Coach Cochrane a wmnmg coach next year 125 . , - Q ' ' 9 , . , . l v ' ' x 9 1 1 a - , . . . . . . . , , . 1 ' ' y , . . . ' a 126 a sprrrted clash ensued rn which we were defeated by a 2 1 score Chrp Hall scored rn the fourth perrod but agarn the lrne could not come up with the tying tally Wrlbraham and Wrllrston were the next two scheduled contests Avon suffered two more defeats by rdentrcal 2 1 scores Agarn rt was the failure of the lrne wrth regard to scoring power that resulted rn the losses Sam jackson agarnst Wrlbraham and Byron Tosr agarnst Wrllrston were the only goalgetters Bob Farrchrld once agarn displayed hrs prowess at the fullback positron and john Arrd demonstrated hrs abrlrty at halfback Parents Week End found the team playing host to Wat krnson A pourmg rarn greeted the two teams as they took the field In the first half Watkrnson bombed through two fourth quarter Steve Spyropoulos pushed through a goal for the home team but rt was not enough as the team lost once again by a 2 1 score The next Saturday Windsor Mountain was Avon s foe up rn Massachusetts Again rn a pourmg rarn the low scoring Avon team lost by a 4 0 count The defense was hampered by the drrvrng rarn as rt crossed up rts signals qurte frequently A resurgence now took place on the Avon team With a new type offense Westmrmter became an easy prey and was dealt a 2 0 defeat A hard shot bounced off therr goalre rn the first half and Tony Hoyt scored rn the second perrod The defense far exceeded rts past performances as Westmrn ster had but few shots at the Avon cage Kent was our next opponent rn a hard fought struggle nerther team could manage a score Both goalres were superb to say the least Bob Farrchrld and Pete Antolrnr were rnstru mental rn helprng Avons Buddy Sregel obtain hrs second shut out rn a row New England Champions Suffield arrrved confident of a vrcrory A strngy Avon team fell before the Black and White 3 1 Sufiield scored two of rts goals on penalty krcks as Sregel made many saves Brll Palmer played well as drd the entrre lrne rn general Roy Attrrde set up Chrp Hall rn the second half for Avons only score Monson was our last game and rt was played on a frozen field at Monson After a scoreless game Monson dented the Avon nets rn the first overtrme perrod and held on to a 1 0 well rn closing out therr soccer careers at Avon Because of rnabrlrty to score and weak reserves the team finished the season with a 2 9 1 record Whatever credrt due the team may be attributed to the leadership of Co captarns Bob Farrchrld and Cole Van De Water Coach Loveland was rnstrumental rn organrzrng the offense A lot of close decr srons were lost and the record mrght easrly have been re versed rf the team had lrved up to rts potential as rt drd rn the last four games The outlook for next year rs rather bright Four lettermen are expected back and many talented JV players are expected to come up through the ranks Thus this year s medrocre record should be improved upon Van De Water, Mr Loveland, Farrchrld goals while holding the hungry Avon offense to none. Y ' 3 - A . 3 . 128 1shed first B111 Emr1ch finrshed second and the Avon harrrers trounced the Chesh1re v1s1tors by a 19 55 count The team next met a powerful Choate team at Choate Needless to say B111 Powers ga1ned h1s fifth consecutrve VIC tory and rrght beh1nd h1m f1n1sh1ng a close fourth was B111 Emr1ch The VICIOIY was Choates though as the score was 23 37 1n the1r favor The last home meet of the season found the team facmg the favored Tr1n1ty team Team sp1r1t reached an unprece dented h1gh and 1ts dr1ve coupled w1th fme runnrng resulted 1n another Avon triumph th1s trme by a 25 32 score The season s seventh contest saw Avon battle the Wesleyan freshmen Wmnrng w1th ease Powers w1thout doubt 11ved up to all that was expected of hnm by the VISIEOIS Marvrn Berry and Duff also turned 10 fine performances The col legrates proved to be yust a l1ttle too strong and carried back to M1dd1etown a 20 35 w1n Scheduled next was a return match w1th Tr1n1ty Over confidence proved d1sastrous and the team lost by the 1den t1ca1 score by wh1ch lf had defeated Tr1n1ty 1n the first meet R1ck Duff m1ssed h1s first race of the season as he succumbed to a cold on the day of the race Weather plays a most rmportant part 1n the eventual out come of cross country meets and the team was soon to learn th1s the hard way journeymg to Deerfield the Avon repre sentatrves were greeted by torrents of ram The race was held nonetheless B111 Gordon and Carl Emmons turned 1n their best performances of the season Deerfield won 26 35 wh1ch w1n may be attnbuted to the 1nclement weather and thus unfavorable course Avon IS rndeed fortunate 1n bemg able to consrder 1tself a member of that assoclatxon wh1ch sponsors the New Eng land Preparatory Champ1onsh1ps Thus the team once agarn traveled to Deerfield The trrp was certamly worth whrle as Powers won Emrrch fimshed seventh and Berry placed twenty seventh Avon finished th1rd rn IES class Avon next encountered a squad made up of both Yale varsrty and JV runners B111 Powers sufiered one of the rare setbacks of h1s career as he lost to a Yale sen1or Avon ran well but lost 19 35 The last meet of the season was run agamst Forman B111 Powers found h1s old style and Dan Berry finrshed second The final score showed another Avon tr1umph the score bemg 19 35 So after a tough season an accountrng would show more losses than WIUS but w1ns and losses are but one way to guage the true merit of a team as Coach Efinger Wlll attest Team SPIIIE and sportsmanlrke compet1t1veness are also much to be desrred It would then seem that th1s was what the 1959 harrrer squad was m possession of There IS no doubt a great deal of talent to be developed 1n the l1kes of Dan Berry B111 Gordon Carl Emmons If th1s asp1rat1on IS reached the future looks brnght rndeed 'I29 . , . . .
