They had collected a goodly amount of necessary baggage, in the way of bits of geography, sections of arithmetic, bunches of dates, fresh from the tree of history, packages of civics, and a supply of grammar. Each, however, had the required ticket--a certificate of promotion from the last station, The Eighth Grade. And it came to pass that promptly upon the stroke of nine they did answer the Con- ductor's cry All aboard and start out on the upgrade in the Train of Knowledge. They were given places in the Freshman Section, and they found the train equipped with a fine dining car whose capable chefs supplied them with much food for their mental growth and development, They .did choose, as president of their group, J immie Miller, who should see that they gained sufficient class pep, loyalty and school spiritg Conductor Mr. Bolander saw to it that they properly digested the meals served them by the Faculty Chefs and Porters. The passengers in the car were: Flossie Ashcroft, Patricia Baker, Gailene Benton, Joel Birch, Joy Bosley, Sandra Bradford, Harry Bradley, Vivian Bruce, Laquota Carver, Bobby Christy, Robert Coons, Ronnie Cooper, Doc Crouch, Mildred Faulkner, Eddie Francis, Wayne Gray, Loretta Gross, Glenna Hiser, Betty Holmes, Robert Holt, Patty Lang, Ruth McClain, Bill Merritt, Jimmie Miller, Ronnie Miles, Joe Money, Barbara Nester, Marilyn Nowling, Donald Owens, Margaret Roller, Jane Selch, Jerry Smith, Vivian Smith, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Tharp, Larry Webb, Peggy Jacobs, and Lois Thomas. At the end of the first year, having successfully met the requirements of Freshman passengers, they were transferred to the Sophomore car and, with a membership of 30, bravely endured the jolting of the rougher travel. Again, Jimmie Miller was chosen president of the trip for this year, and the journey was livened by stops for a number of parties and occasions of gaiety. Pranks were frequently indudged in when the Conductor, Mr, Cox, Head Brakeman and Porters were looking after other sections of the Train. Three new passengers joined us: Elizabeth Acton, James Hastings, and Mary Schell. With the passing of time they were again shifted, being placed in the Junior Coach, with 36 jolly members of whom passenger Pat Baker was elected president. Six passen- gers failed to board this train, but four others, notably Phyllis Bowman, Carolyn Hadley, Jim Snapp, and Ray Jarrett joined the group. Much enjoyed stops at Pleasure Resorts included a trip to Shakamak Park. 'Side trips were indulged in, to the Athletic Fields, where numerous passengers became proficient in basketball, baseball and other games. The mental food contained many morsels hard to chew and digest, but with Mrs. Huffman and Mr, Woody declaring that It must be accomplished or we will throw you off the Train, the Juniors nobly did their duty. Then came the happy day when the group was transferred to the Senior Coach with increased privileges and responsibilities, with Joel Birch as class president. The grade became steeper, the journey rougher, but ah, the glorious view as the class of 1954 looked out on Commencement Station looming in the near distance. These Senior passengers who had been companions during the long journey became even more closely united in school spirit and class bonds, They came to appreciate more fully the super- vision given them by Conductor Mr.Price, Head Brakeman Mrs, Huffman, and the capable Faculty Chefs and Porters. They enjoyed stops made for the Washington and New York trip. They grew quite puffed up over the records of certain members in the side trips to Athletic Fields. They successfully passed the close inspection of the examiners who checked up on their baggage of Knowledge, and now they stand ready for a final transfer, At Commencement Station, on the Mount of Learning, they leave the Senior Coach to be- come passengers of various roads of the Great Beyond, to the cities of Success, Fame, and Worthy Achievement. The passengers making the final trip are: Elizabeth Acton, Patricia Baker, Joel Birch, Joy Bosley, Phyllis Bowman, Harry Bradley, Robert- Coons, Carolyn Hadley, Ronnie Cooper, Doc Crouch, Eddie Francis, Loretta Gross,James Hastings, Joe Money, Barbara Nester, Marilyn Nowling, Jane Selch, Jerry Smith, Vivian Smith, Frank Tharp, Larry Webb, Peggy Jacobs, Mary Schell, Jim Snapp, Betty Holmes, Ruth McClain, Bill Merritt, and Jimmie Miller.
