AVON HIGH SCHOOL REFLECTIONS 1987 TABLE OF CONTENTS In Memoriam Administration, Teachers and Staff Seniors Superlatives Baby Pictures Morss Review Class Will Activities Underclassmen Sports Candid Pictures Centurian Pages Advertisements Notes of Appreciation IN MEMORIAM WILLIAM TONER Four years in high school We’ve had to go through. But the hardest one we had Was the one when we lost you. We thought it was the end As we lay our heads down to cry. But we helped each other through And were willing to give it a try. Just knowing you’d be happy And one day teach us to fly. You left a lot of friends behind And made it hard for us to part With the one friend we all cherished And whose friendship we held close to our heart. Your smile was like the sun. It brightened our dullest day. Your laughter made us feel happy. It seemed to show us the way. We’ll never forget the memories You’ve given us through the years. If only you were here, there ' d be no need to shed these tears. We will one day see you again But until that day, we hope you know Your memory is with us forever. And we will never let it go. Melissa Hampton, Class of 88 3 SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Graduates: Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1987! As you depart for lives of further study, work, service or travel, this Yearbook will long serve as a reminder of the individual and collective impact you have had on the life and history of Avon High School. Similarly, it will provide a testament to the influ ence that Avon High School has had on each of you. Compressed within these two-dimensional surfaces are various events which record the faces, activities, triumphs and encoun- ters of all kinds that comprised the 1986-1987 School Year. Each picture is only a key which can unlock the deeper, richer exper- iences that lie beneath the surface. The true value of this record is to be found in your hearts, minds and memories. Like anything of great worth, it will become more meaningful and precious with each passing year. We wish each of you a wonderful, challenging and rewarding future. The collective hopes and wishes of the faculty, staff, administration and friends will travel with you throughout the coming months and years. Joseph B. Rappa, Ed.D. My LORD, what a storm! The wind would PIERCE the warmest clothing. All the way home he’d had to DODGE all the other cars. SHARON hadn’t been ploughed and it had been necessary to take a strange LANE to get home. He’s just had a cup of CAMPBELL’s soup when he realized that an ice dam had formed on the roof and that he’d have to go up to take care of it. It was no time to SALLY forth, but he had to. So out came the ladder and up he went. The rooftop was as windy as a HEATH and he was certainly not in the LEE. He got down to the edge to inspect the situation, and just as he started to CRANE his neck to see better, he toppled off the roof, landing in a snowbank, thoroughly dazed. He VERADT where he was and started to hear a lovely MELODY. It was spring and a ROBIN was singing. He had visions of Florida, where it was warm and not the season of HOLLY, and he was at Daytona Beach about to see the race of the season. ROBERT MACH1NSKI, strutting and flexing his muscles for all the girls to see, was about to race STEPHEN HALLISSEY’s Cadillac, and ROBERT CRUIKSHANK, wanting to LINDA hand, was using an ALAIN wrench on it. He only had to POTTER a few minutes more on it before he would have it running on all seven cylinders. But the eighth was in tough shape. It had a terrible RAPPA in it and sounded as if something would come through the block. Next to the Cadillac sat a MARK II Porsche 944 with a WILSON Sporting Goods logo on the door, piloted by ROBERT LUNDGREN. He’s RICH; he bought the car at CLAIR’s, in West Roxbury, and drove it down through NEWTON, VIRGINIA, and the CAROLinas. And just think! Mr. HENDERSON and Mr. CONTI taught both these champions to drive! MACHINSKI was the DARLENE of the pit. JODIE SELMAN kept hanging on him, sighing, “Oh, Robert!” On the dashboard he had small photos of JAYNE Mansfield and MARILYN Monroe. He claimed to be a well-trained driver and said officials would tolerate no boobs on the track. Meanwhile, LUNDGREN had his followers. His coach, PAULA PIEKARSKI, was giving him tips on cornering. ERIC O’CONNOR was trying to get a SQUIBB ' more gas in the tank using a GERRY can. It had been a cold winter in the North a’NASUTI one, since everyone used coal to heat, but here in Florida it was hot. Both drivers were in the LYONS’ den, about to race on the track of tracks. As long as they didn’t hit the WINTERGRASS on the dunes, they’d be okay, but if they did, it would be KATY bar the door! MACHINSKI decided to do it up BROWN taking a big swig from a MILLER’S can and a big bite out of a CLARK’s bar and yelling “CARRAGGI-o” to boost his morale, he BOIROS into his seat and cranks the engine, DAVID against Goliath. That huge Caddy mill came coughing to life, sounding like something DAPPER Dan would drive. LUNDGREN merely touched the key on the Grinnell Special and eight finely-honed Porsche cylinders began to scream in unison, going “WAUGH, WAUGH, WAUGH” as he gunned the engine. The cars hacked out to the starting line, where flagman JULIEN started the race off. An exciting race! But, what’s this? Look! It’s a genuine 1947 Kaiser-FRASIER, piloted by none other than SHAN herself, flooring the long-stroke six for all it will give! Since many of the top run- ners had graduated, Avon was not seen as a threat in the league. That thinking began to change at the opening meet when Sacred Heart discovered that Avon had indeed lost some runners, but had also gained some. Karl Smith, later vot- ed MVP of the 1986 season, led the team to an easy victory that after- noon, and repeated the perfor- mance six times during the season, once breaking the track record at Blue Hills, lowering it to 13:21. Co- Captain Brendan Ward took five firsts during the fall, also setting a record of 17:00 on the much longer Norfolk Agricultural track. Mike Sweet ran a consistent third for the team all season until the last meet, when regular fourth runner William Cummings finally passed him by a narrow margin for the third posi- tion. Co-Captain Aaron McKechnie filled out the fifth position through most of the season, while Chris Erickson and Scott Eisnor also placed in the top five. With a season record of 10-3 and losing meets only to large schools, Avon’s Cross-Country team won its first championship, being undefeat- ed in its own division. At the May- flower League Meet, Avon placed second out of fourteen teams; Karl Smith received the Freshman Run- ner of the Year Award for 1986. Avon also participated in the State Meet, with a respectable 18th place among 40 division schools. Coach Gifford and the entire team gave an excellent effort throughout the sea- son and deserve to be proud of their accomplishment in becoming Avon’s FIRST CHAMPIONS. -Robert Cruikshank The 1986 Avon High School Varsity Volleyball team were Co- Champions for the Mayflower League this year. The team’s lead- ing servers were Sharon Lebovitz, Kim Agrew, and Doreen LeGrice. Sharon was also team captain and MVP. In the final game of the season, played in the Avon High gym, the team played Norfolk Aggies for the Mayflower League Championship. The team fought hard and was re- warded for its efforts by a very im- portant win. This was one of the most exciting games to be played at Avon High in three years. The playoff game against West- port was also a hard-fought game. In a best-of-five match, the team was defeated, three to none. Avon also had three players on the Mayflower League All-Star Team. They were Sharon Lebovitz, Kim Argrew, and Doreen LeGrice. J.V. VOLLEYBALL The 1986 Avon High School Ju- nior Varsity Volleyball team had an invincible season of 12 wins and 0 losses. The team’s leading servers were Barbara Tolson, who was also team captain and MVP, and Julie Bevens. In the three years since the J.V. team was established, it has been virtually unstoppable, with a record of 37 wins and 1 loss. In the final game of the season, played in front of an Avon crowd, the team won two games to none. The first string won easily, and the second string, showing a magnifi- cent effort, came back from an 8-2 deficit, to win the match 16-14. The team was awarded sweat- shirts for its effort. This was the first Junior Varsity team to be rec- ognized for its season with an award of this kind. SOCCER After losing only two starters to graduation, the Varsity Soccer team looked to improve over last year’s 6-10-1 record. Led by co- captains Mike Small, an all-star mid- fielder the year before, and Matt Crane, the Panthers looked as if they could challenge for the Small School Division title. The defense, anchored by goalie Mike Matta, an honorable mention all-star in 1985, included fullbacks A1 Forde and Paul Grenham. The midfield, providing strong all- around play, had Jeff Small, Chris Dunham, Mike Small and Mike Cox. The offense, that hoped to provide the scoring punch Coach Gugliotta had lacked the past few years, included Dave Small and Chris Dunham in the middle, with Matt Crane and Scott Klimas on the wings. Players that were to contri- bute off the bench were Dave Costa, A1 Hauvuy, Eric O’Connor, Mike Darrienzo, Brian Costa, Chris Johnson, Scott Mahon, Brian Cox and Todd Crane. The Panthers got off to a fine start, the first third of the season going 4-0-1 against division oppo- nents. However, fortune changed when it came time to play Large School Division Opponents, as the team went 1-3-2 for an overall re- cord of 5-3-5 heading into the last leg of the season with a good shot at the Small School title. Hard times really hit the team as it lost some key games against division foes. Finishing a close second, the Panthers’ 7-6-5 record was good enough for a State Tournament berth. In the tournament the team was overpowered by a strong Do- ver-Sherborn team, 7-0. For their excellent play through- out the season, four players, Mike Small, Matt Crane, Chris Dunham, and Mike Matta were selected as Small School All-Stars and Paul Granham received honorable men- tion. -Matt Crane 53 SOCCER Playing with all my friends made playing soccer worthwhile. We didn’t win as often as we would have liked, but the point is we tried and played hard. I hope next year’s team works even harder for the best soccer season ever. Good Luck Guys! O J I enjoyed being part of the successful volleyball team for the past few years. Though we had our ups and downs, we pulled through together to be champions. Even though the season has ended, our friendship will never end. — Sharon Lebovitz 57 WINTER SPORTS REVIEW BOYS’ BASKETBALL In the 1986-87 season two Ju- nior Varsity boys’ basketball teams were established. JV II, coached by Peter Gill, played against local schools on an independent sched- ule, finishing with a record of 2-15. Playing well were Scott Mahan, Bri- an Cox and Brian Costa. JV I played on the same schedule as the Varsity team. Coached by Richard Gifford, the team played well, led by Karl Smith. Brendan Ward, Derek Tawil and Scott Klimas. Paul Granham, Ward and Klimas also played on the Varsity team. The JV I season record was 11-6 and both JV teams worked hard and gave an excellent effort. The Varsity team record was 5- 13 for the season. Outstanding shooters for the team were sopho- mores Michael Matta, Brendan Ward and Mark Doucette. David Small and Eric “Moonbeast” O’Connor helped with rebounding; playing well defensively were Paul Grenham and Matt Crane. Shooting well from the foul line were Scott Klimas, Mike Small, and, of course, Alain “the Hoov” Hauvuy. Surest shot: Mike Matta Most enthusiastic bench warmer: The Moonbeast Most energetic player: Mike Small Most flamboyant player: Cory Brooks Most points in one game: Karl Smith (37) Most fouls: Derek Tawil Longest shot: Chris Gonsalves Smartest Varsity Coach: Daniel Herlihy — Rob Cruikshank 58 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls’ Varsity basketball team finished the 1987 season with a record of 4 wins and 12 losses. The team consisted of 2 seniors, 5 juniors, 1 sophomore and 4 fresh- men. This was a rebuilding year, and the team showed great im- provement. They consistently hus- tled and played hard all season long. Leading scorer for the season was junior point guard Doreen Le- Grice, with 240 points overall. The leading rebounder was junior cen- ter Sandi Head, with 148 rebounds. Doreen LeGrice was also selected as a Mayflower League all-star and MVP. With 10 returning players, the girls’ team looks forward to a highly-rewarding season in 1988. The girls’ Junior Varsity was a very young and inexperienced team. Most players, though only in their first year of organized basket- ball, were very enthusiastic and hustled every game from tip off to final buzzer. Led by Captain Sue Nasiopou- lus, they defeated some tough teams like Sacred Heart and Bris- tol-Plymouth. The future of girls’ basketball looks bright. Outstanding performers for the year were Pauline Ciolek, Ann Ma- rie Paine, Ann Cerrato, Julie Bark- er, Donna Crane, Kellie Kopke, Tara Cruikshank, Sue Foster and Alex Michelson. - Peter Crone - Cindy Savage - Rob Paine BASKETBALL VARSITY Front Row L to R: P.
