Last Christmas vacation, as you may recall, the temperature went up one day to 73 degrees. The Klimas was delightful, not its usual Fowler self. This, of course, pleased Scrooge, because everything felt very un-Christmaslike. In fact, this record- breaking temperature was like Hampton Beach in the summer. Scrooge, relishing the warm and gentle southwest winds, went outside. This sort of weather made him want to Baravella along the Italian coast and lead the life of the idle rich, but now it was not possible, and he had to content himself with New England in this Devine weather. So outside he went, taking a chaise lounge and some blueBerry muffins to nibble on. He lay on the chair, listening to the murmuring of the Brooks nearby and working on liquid refreshment from Blanchard’s. He lit up a cigarette, inhaled, and exclaimed as he exhaled, “I’d walk a mile for a Kamel!” He turned on his transistor to listen to the mellifluous tones of Sylvester Stallone singing “Once in Love with Amy,” and then it happened: Scrooge fell asleep. The next thing he knew he had arrived in the Ferland of England, and he decided to Lisacar. He wound up with a Mark VII Fordc, complete with Wilton carpeting, genuine Connolly leather hide interior, and a Willard battery. He wasn’t about to take Tawil of a car made by General Motors Fisher Body. Of course a custom Darren Packard would have been nice, but that would have been forty years out of date. So he started southwest, heading for Newton Abbott, a town the Romans might have conquered after they had conquered Gaul. That, of course, as all of you know from your Ancient History, was somewhat after the Helen of Troy bit. Scrooge arrived in Newton Abbott in late afternoon and decided for the good of his rotting soul and neglected Faith that he should attend vespers at the local St. Thomas’s church. He arrived late, just as the procession was going in, singing that famous hymn “Whooley, Whooley, Whooley, Lord God Almighty.” You know the rest of it. After having done his duty, Scrooge retired to the local pub for something to wet his whistle. Unlike the usual pub, this one offered entertainment. You could watch the Davis Cup matches on the television, and when that ended, Charlie Chaplin flicks were to come on. If Scrooge had wanted to watch the late show, Brian’s Song was on. Another choice was a World War Two flick about the Gerrys attacking London during the Blitz. The Donald Duck full-length cartoon did not look good. The staff at the pub were just Lorina curtain to make a makeshift stage as Scrooge came in, and about half an hour later, a live show began. Wearing blue Jeannes, the famous duo of Flanders and Swan came in and did several numbers. First, they sang a cute little number which began: 42 The number went on in that Gilbert and Sullivan vein, using lots of -ity words which Scrooge can no longer recall. Then they went on to sing the famous James Thurber poem set to their own music: “The wonderful bird is the Peloquin! Its beak can hold more than its belly can, And enough food for a week it holds in its beak, And 1 don’t see how the hell he can!” They closed out their act with several Rudy Vallee numbers. At this point Scrooge saw the barmaid and Qualter over, a Darlene girl, a Sweet lass, a Scott, she said, a member of the Campbell clan, who had been Skerrying around all night serving the patrons. They got into a pleasant conversation, and Scrooge asked her what happened if customers did not pay. “Bevens to Betsy,” she said, “We Dunham. You remember King Richard the Lion-Hearted from your history? He visited this place once, and we can’t afford to go out of business. In fact, Richardson used to patronize this pub all the time. That was after he married Eleanor of Aquitaine. Even King Edward used to come here!” Scrooge thought her a bit Fahey, for her history was certainly not accurate. The evening wore on and the barmaid did not forget Scrooge, to an extent that finally became embarrassing. A gorgeous girl came in alone and sat down. She looked very Greek. Scrooge thought it might be worth striking up conversation with her. What was her name, he asked. “Stephanie Papagiotopoulos,” she replied. “What did you Shea?” asked Scrooge, a touch under the weather. At this point he realized that he could benefit from going outside into the clear night air for a while, to do some star gazing, to see if he could spot Eldebaran, not to mention clearing up his head and not twisting his bridgework into curlicues by trying to repeat that name. A pity to let that one go. But as he soon realized, he wouldn’t have had a chance. For what should cough around the corner, but a 1954 Chrysler Sputfire, driven by Alan Melamed! Wow! This was Nolan for a huge car like that! Alan was rocking back and forth at the wheel making vrooom! vroom! noises to make the car sound powerful. Out of this enormous machine jumped Kim Balboni, Dieter Lambauer, Kathy Grenham, and John Gorman. Each was sporting a Thompson sub-machine gun. Behind them emerged Rene Hernandez. “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!” Scrooge exclaimed. “What is going on here?” “Hey, You! Back inside!” yelled Rene, evidently the head honcho. There was no way of figuring out what they wanted, but they looked pretty Savage. “We’re going to get at the Root of all this!” Whatever the Root was. Their violent demands Pierced the quiet of the evening. All of a sudden, another of their number, Eric Seyller, appeared behind them with an axe, Lizzie Borden style. After being hit with that, nothing the Medicos could do could save a life. Scrooge started to flee, just as that axe was coming for him, and as it hit, he awoke, blinking sleepily up from his chaise lounge into the cumulus clouds being chased by the delightful December southwest zephyr. jL-o wj”! m • ■ c nMHi v - tj nf M JKM iv $ 1 - g ! - S D w M pv i j Jk L ' y ,T ' 1 BHPS HQm PP a S m VV r K N ; :jf ' - - Michelle Lorina Sue Hampton “Right” Rene Hernandez Lisa Makaitis „ S Jeanne Martineau Tricia Medico Steph Papagiotopoulos Brian Skerry Scott Sweet Mike Thompson Leanne Whooley 47 rapw - Uiilf if H $ a V Mi ?? It was a chance to grow physically and mentally; it meant being ready every night to meet a new challenge. Basketball gave me the chance to experience a closeness, a common bond, with my teammates. Although the re- cord will not show it, there were many personal as well as moral victories won on the basketball court.
