Our Junior year was full of success and happiness all because of one man. Who was always coming up with fresh new ideas? Who helped us with Jail Day, the roses, the chocolate valentine hearts, the Easter Bunny, and so much more? Mr. Dunford! We will never forget him. He was more than our class advisor; he was our best friend. Mr. Dunford, this is for you . . . Illness forced Mrs. Lam- son to step down from teaching at the April, 1981, vacation, and although she fervently hoped to be able to return to Avon in Septem- ber, she was unable to do so. Mrs. Lamson did not seek popularity, but rather excellence. She was a lady of impeccable stan- dards in every way, and many a student and the occasional teacher unaccustomed to her stan- dards chafed at her demands. She steadfastly refused to lower her standards, however, and students soon had to learn the difference be- tween the hard right and the easy wrong. A wise woman, Mrs. Lamson knew that to polish a dia- mond, abrasive is sometimes necessary, and she was unafraid to apply this for the well-being of her students. She knew well that failure to learn high standards ultimately would be very cruel. She wanted her lessons to last a lifetime, and everyone who knew her has been touched by the excellence she exemplified. In the end she taught her greatest lesson of all. In the fact of overpowering illness, she taught us how to live life to its fullest, cheerfully, gracefully, with warmth, with humor, and with unflinching courage. MRS. After such an incident, they dope you up terribly and strange thoughts go through your head. At first it was a question simply of pulling through, and that haunting old epitaph came back: Here lie the remains of Kathy Swanton who fell off her horse on the way to Taunton. ' ' Eventually, when it appeared that imminent demise was not coming down the Pike, the doctors came to hold my Hand and assure me that a Kidney transplant would not be necessary. Dr. Christina D ' Alessandro, Dean of the Harvard Medical School, dropped in. Well, she said, You nearly got to St. Peter ' s Gate. The Powers that be got to you just in time. I tried to be brave, like Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy, but the dope was having its effect. Paranoia was setting in. I accused Tina of having called the CIA in MacLean, Virginia to run me down. At this, she gave out several of her usual hearty haw-Hawes, but it wasn ' t funny. They had put bugs in the room. It had Waiter-wall carpeting, and several noisy Roches had just scampered across the floor. You can ' t Dunay it; this room is simply Devine, she said. I wondered who could Connor into that thought, even if the nurses had decorated the room with Holly. It was enough to Madden you. Anything but this: a round of golf with a Bonnie lass in Scotland at St. Andrew ' s Golf Course, or even a month living on an Indian reservation in a Hogan- but this dreadful place- if it got worse I ' d throw up their Campbell ' s soup. I ' d blow the smoke of my King Edwards cigars in their faces, I ' d Burnham up with the lighted stubs, I ' d really raise Cain! As time passed, however, health started to return, and it was possible to sit up for some time each day in a Morris chair. One evening Patty Gallagher along with Marjorie Gormley dropped in, laden with Monterey Jack cheese, Ripley fudge ice cream, hamburgers from Burger King, and mushrooms from Mennino ' s mushroom farm. The food was a great break from the hospital ' s Mulligantawny stew. We decided to flip on the television. Who to our wondering eyes should appear, in the Christmas extravaganza originating from the Hotel Pierre in New York, but Mary Lou Pelaggi, following in her sister ' s footsteps, dressed in a slinky, glittering gown. A broad-faced, bespectacled announcer introduced her. Good Evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to our show, or, as we say in the country of romance, Bonasera. Please give Mary Lou a big hand. 70 THE MORSS REVIEW She sang several numbers: a Gregoryan chant, Roses are Blooming in Picardi, Michelle, The Age of Gatarius, from Hair, and Rudy the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Her voice was low and husky, not one to Pierce your ear. Then they did a dance routine. Replacing Lawrence Welk was Bob Jannette, and we saw Andrea Lee in the chorus line. The last number was sung by the choir standing on a Reiser at the back of the stage. It was a spectacular rendition of Lori, Lori Hallelujah! Donald Netinho was the basso and Diane Szydlowski the soprano. After that show ended, we watched an episode of Teri and the Pirates, starring Keith Sandler. Just at this point, nurse Ellen Burke charged in, brandishing a horse needle on the working end of a huge syringe. What was about to happen was obvious, but it made you want to Burrow into the bed, Paula blanket over you, and pretend nothing was going to happen. But it was, for she had brought along two ex night club bouncers, now orderlies, Lifrieri and Shymkevich, to hold down the struggling patient. Okay, darling, she geamed malevolently, Have I got something for you! Down they come. Dexter or sinister? Choose your side! There ' s nothing Dexter about it and the whole lot of you are sinister, as far as I ' m concerned, I blubbered. Carraggio, Carraggio! she exclaimed. You ' re not going to Walsh on this deal! I assured her that in my role as Scrooge, I had no intention of displaying Christian benevolence by turning the other cheek, and that if she was a Karen person, she wouldn ' t take pleasure in this. Suddenly, into the room in cheerleading costume burst Elaine Nickandros, Jeannie McGovern, Debbie Doherty, and Debbie Clasby, all shouting, Jab him again! Jab him again! Harder! Harder! Joe Ferrini, dressed in a Dracula costume of his brother ' s, led the chant. Clutching my pajama bottoms, I dashed out into the corridor past astonished station nurses Blake and Ballum, and out to a waiting taxicab, to go Lisa room in a hotel where Scrooge would no longer be subjected to such singular indignities.
