LOMBARDO THE CLASS OF 1978 WISHES TO DEDICATE THEIR YEARBOOK TO THE MEMORY OF HAROLD ARBUCKLE DOES ANYBODY REALLY KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS? How many of us really care ? The time we have spent caring we have been rewarded for, The other times we have failed . But, to have completed twelve years of school Shows that we have put most of our time into caring . Now that we are graduates And have completed a most important part in life , This is the time to ask, What time is it? Really ! Isn ' t it about time we started to find out? Our whole life is run by time . Now that it is time to go off on our own , It is time to mature and take on responsibilities as an adult. In the past we have had time to ourselves , But in the present and future we should make time for others And help them to find out what time it really is. Time is a factor in life from which we can ' t escape. Superintendent G. Vlahos Guidance E. McCall D. Mastriano M. Malcolmson Clerical Staff C. Costa C. Gibson Nurse R. Coit 6 English C. Mores M. What wa that . . . the other side of midnight . . . WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS JUNE 4, 1978 MORSS ON THE SENIOR CLASS After getting from home from school one afternoon , exhaustion proved too much and during a pre - dinner nap, a very curious dream occurred, which included in some way nearly everyone in the class of ' 78. I had returned from some time away, getting back in mid -winter. Driving on snow proved hard, but I decided to Sally forth anyway . Saying an Ave Maria , I climbed into the car , but within two blocks someone driving a Dono van had really pulled a Bober and crashed into the sid e of the car. Out climbed Eric Roberts, who then exclaimed, ' ' That kinda Evans things up, doesn ' t it? You picked on me in school, and now I got you. ' ' What a mess the car was. It wouldn ' t be possible to Palmer off on anyone, the finished was badly Meaghered, and anyway, Sault had rotted out most of the rocker panels. The thing was pretty much Dunn . I had failed to in Surette . I had taken it on the Chin . As you can guess , the car had Costa lot , and who wants to take out any more Lohnes for a new one ? The best thing was to take a Thompson sub -machine gun to it, say that Lombardo and DeRienzo had done it trying to kill the driver, and collect the insurance, just in Kaitz a good story was needed. Not quite knowing what to do, I guessed that I ' d be a bit Scott about things and just be a Walker, and not pay the premium for a new car . This , of course , limited the range of travel to downtown Avon , now much transformed from the old days. Much new building was going on. The old blacksmith shop had been tom down. That was after Paul Richardson had had too much gin with not enough Quinnine water one night and tried to Byrne it down with a lighted Zager. Father Daigle from St. Michael ' s church caught him in the act and got him out sight before Fire Chief Foster tried to Lynch him. With the new construction, the Masons were busy with brickwork and Lally hovering in the Lee of the wind, trying to sing Carrolls because Xmas was coming. Finally, because of the cold, I went into a new store. They had Welch ' s candy bars and Mill- er ' s High Life . I ordered a snack at the counter because the Cooke seemed so genial. ' ' Doucette down, won ' t you? ' ' she had said. You look as if you are Sherberin. Yes, I said, ' ' It Maddens me that they can ' t get the heat up. Hope you have some good hot soup. In a way, I was so cold, I wished I ' d headed for the nearby Lounge, but it was only noon. I sat quietly waiting for the meal, munching on some Almonds that I had bought and Russeling through the paper . The radio was on , pumping out the latest hit by Hot Ice Jannette and Old Father Hubbard. Music by Anderson and the Pops was now out. Just like the programs I had listened to as a kid , like Jack Armstrong , the all American Boy . Gone like Charlie McCarthy, Ted Williams, the old country Barnes, and replaced with McDonal d ' s and the Lori Hallelujah Belly Dancing Studio, run by Madame Nessralla and one of her Pals, the Turkish Princess Janis. It was obvious by their gorgeous smiles that both used MacLean ' s toothpaste. One of these Mar- tin-Marietta products, you know. Finally the soup came. ' ' Don ' t Panek, ' ' said the Cooke, ' ' I hadn ' t forgotten you. We were just Creighton some stuff up to go back to the distributor in Sharon and I was Synan a form. The stuff has to go from there to a Vasil in Boston harbor. All very odd. The last time they chucked it over. Didn ' t use their Head. Had to Fischer all out later. Had to put Netinho over it and haul it up. I don ' t understand nothin ' anymore. ' ' The conversation certainly was strange, but you never know what is Hatched in the brains of humans. If she got much dottier, they ' d have to Tucker away. 82 After finishing the snack, I wandered back into the cold and wandered through the square . Several new businesses were evident- a Kelley girl office, a Chinese woodcarving studio with the motto, We Carveale, a Hammond Organ studio, and a shiny new Citgo station with the motto We like Tougas you up . Guess who its proprietor was . Surmounting the station was a magnificent carved wooden Griffin , done by the local woodcarver. A fancy new restaurant with the name Caesar ' s Palace was adorned with a motto Veni, Vedi, Vinci. A new machine shop had sprung up, specializing in rebuilding aircraft en- gines. Their motto was, We get you Flanigan. All work guaranteed. No Walshing on any deal. A new Jail had been built, next to the police station, to hold those rowdies from the old Beagle Club who didn ' t have the where Whittall for fines and who were waiting for someone to Ballum out. Next to the jail were the law offices of the Irish Mafiosi, McEntee, Demarco, Gallagher, and McQuaid, whose big business was with the jail. They, it seems, were much feared around town, and even the Aldridge sis- ters, renowned locally for their independent attitudes, decided to tone down their profitable discoteque when the lawyers sued them on behalf of David Mahoney , who claimed that the calm atmosphere of his funeral parlor next door was being disturbed. He said that the Peterson awning on the south entrance had been blasted away by the noise of the music from next door and that the volume would wake the dead, and he couldn ' t have that going on. He claimed it was a matter of Lauran order. The night Bobby Gra- vina appeared as the featured singer, Bouncer Nickandros and Kenny Tolson couldn ' t control the crowds, and they were afraid, because they knew the motto of the lawyers: Eileen on you. After that incident, the Aldridges engaged quieter groups. Above the lawyers ' offices were several other small es- tablishments ; Merlo the Magician Magic Shop , where all sorts of magicicians supplies were sold and where Dinise the Unbelievable could be engaged for children ' s birthday parties; the Tibnam Detective Service, featuring silent sleuthing; that concern was often employed by the lawyers downstairs; and the Leonti Price Operatic Studios, where Verdi and Puccini was heard to fill the air. John Cannily Connol- ly, who was always known to get his man by the cleverest means. He loved to tell about his nearest miss. He was tracking down a dangerous thug named Seppy, whom he had been following for a long time. He knew that if he came face to face, death would be the only way for one of them. One day it occurred, down on the Boston waterfront Cannily Connolly was following Seppy after he had come out of a warehouse on a dock when suddenly Seppy whirled on him, demanding to know why he was being fol- lowed . I was unarmed , ' ' said Cannily Connolly , ' ' and my only hope was to get him over the edge of the wharf, because I knew he couldn ' t swim. Just as he reached for a gun, I lunged for him. ' ' What happened then? ' ' 1 asked? Cannily Connolly answered, ' ' I Hovsepian. ' ' Cannily Connolly earned his reputation on that. The last office on the floor was that of Ghilardi and Emma, Dating Counselors, who served people unlike Cannily Connolly, the woman who couldn ' t get her man or the man who couldn ' t get his woman. They gave tips on grooming, how to snow your first date, and how to handle Dermidi- tis. They had a computer hookup to find lonelies for other lonelies. Just for fun, they put Mr. Morss into the computer , but when the console began to smoke and bum up , I fled , waking up from what was fast turning into a nightmare ! 83 OUR ADVISORS M.
