Letorney, Principal of Avon High School, in appreciation of his enthusiasm for learning, inspiration towards excellence, and high regard for the individual. We pray that God will make our wills as strong, our smiles as warm, our hearts as kind, our purposes as high, and our lives as filled with wisdom and respect as his. In return for the ambitions and ideals which he has imparted to us, may we achieve the success he wishes for us. 5 Miss Braden, teacher, counselor, and friend, has guided us through Avon High School with her warm and understanding ways. Constantly encouraging and aiding us in all our endeavors Miss Braden has given us faith in ourselves and our abilities. As a teacher she has instilled new knowledge; as a counselor she has instilled sound values and new ambi- tions; and as a friend she has instilled the joy of living in us. We can never thank Miss Braden enough. Appreciation mm • ■■■«■ - a- •• s as a m i « a iiwrn ■■ m m a s 6 Administration and Faculty 7 School Superintendent DR. STEPHEN E. DUH!? 51 President , Terri Alger Citizenship— a quality necessary in every good student, is one of the most important qualifications of a Na- tional Honor Society member. Scholarship— it is extremely important for a National Honor Society member to be able to express their ideas and opinions with force and clarity. Leadership— a quality each of the National Honor Society members must possess in every sphere of influence. Service— another very necessary quality of a National Honor Society member. Each -member must not only be of service to others but to their school. Our National Honor Society, in its second full year, has collectively expressed these qualities in many ways. They offer tutoring to any student who requests it; they supervise the highly successful year-round book fair; and co-sponsored an assembly to introduce the student body to the many facets of student life. Not only have they recognized outstanding students, they have be- come a significant influence in our school life. Initiation of provisional sophomore members and the newly elected Juniors. Electrically Brockton EDISON Company ALFRED Q. PANTHER THE CHALLENGE OF CITIZENSHIP by Robert T. Peterson The adoption of the American Constitution by the sparsely settled Western World ushered in a new nation ... a democratic republic whose faith in the reason and dignity of man confronted the old regime in Europe and, in the years that followed, provided it with the in- spiration of a great example. Storm and stress have visited the land of Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln, but the ship of state has lived through all the tempests. Today the United States of America stands in a position of unrivalled power and leadership among nations of the earth. The United States just didn ' t become great, but people like you and me ioined hands to help and protect one another. A distinguished succession of leaders has stood at the helm during our national history; great men such as Hamilton, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Jackson; just to mention a few. But a few outstanding leaders didn ' t form the government of the United States. It was a joint action by the people for the purpose of the American Government. The purpose is expressed in the preamble to the Constitution which states: We, the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union ... do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. For over a hundred years, one of the most prized possessions in the world has been a certificate, paper, or passport that is evidence of United States citizenship. Driven out by force or fear of an oppressor ' s might, or simply seeking greater opportunity than they had in their own countries, millions have left their homelands to begin a new life in America. These immigrants, no matter what race, sex or marital status, pledged an oath that they will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and bear true faith and allegiance to the same. Those of us born and raised in the United States rarely appreciate the worth of our citizenship unless we have occasion to travel to foreign lands or to learn from refugees what it has meant to them. It isn ' t exactly a happy thought that most naturalized citizens know more about our government especially our Constitution, than do those born in this country. Many Americans go through a lifetime without having read the Declaration of Independence and the Con- stitution, not realizing how these two great documents have guaranteed to them the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness , and the privilege of living under a government of the people, by the people and for the people . The Constitution is the original rule book for the game of American Citizenship. Like baseball, football, or basketball rule books, it has grown and changed to keep up with new ideas and improved ways of doing things. One of the few drawbacks of our government is the cost of govern- ment services. There is a price on everything that the government does for us that we must pay for in taxes, or in government debts that make our whole economic life less secure. While most of the increased cost is due to the needs of national defense and foreign aid in these years of cold and hot war, the costs of non- military services have risen sharply, too. The late great Albert Einstein once admitted that figuring out his United States income tax was beyond him— he had to go to a tax consultant. This is too difficult for a mathematician, said Einstein. It takes a philosopher. Most U.S. taxpayers are baffled, too, by the intricacies of the income tax. When they send off their returns, conscientious taxpayers can never be really sure whether they cheated themselves or their government. None of what has been said here is intended to suggest that our government is extravagant or is performing any services it shouldn ' t. The point is, though, that these services we urge our government to give us take money out of our pockets, and that we should think about this before we add voice to those who seek MORE government services. Democracy operated on the principle that fair goals can and must be gained by fair methods for all people. The founders of our country decided that our form of government should be that of a republic or representative democracy. In a representative democracy the people govern themselves, but they do so by entrusting the entire administration of the state to their representatives whom they choose for that purpose. To borrow Daniel Webster ' s famous words, I would like to end by saying, Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable. Sponsored by FRANK M. NOYES POST 8892 86 V.F.W. Avon, Mass. M
