from Hopkins 33 0 Pettrngrll and Mott starred for the B1g Red each scoring two touchdowns On defense Bob Ferrrer and Nate Tracy were outstand ing both making tackles all over the field Sandy Phelps and Rick Rrckards were the stalwarts of the lme Bill Tracy also played an outstanding game both offensively and defensively scoring the fifth touchdown The next game was against the arch rrval Kings wood on Parents Weekend The Avon squad was keyed up for this game and decisively whipped the Wyverns in a hard and well played battle The game was a scoreless tie until midway in the second period when Al Pettlngrll broke the ice for Avon and by the end of the first half we had scored three touch downs and Avon led 20 O The Big Red continued the onslaught rn the third period scoring twice more and rt wasnt until Coach Cochrane Hooded the held with reserves that the scoring stopped It was a terrrfic victory as Avon beat Kingswood by the largest score rn the history of the rivalry After the Kingswood victory we lost a hard fought decision to a much more powerful and older Monson team 32 20 Thls was probably the most exciting game as the underdog Avon came battling back time after time against the much stronger Monson team The rndrvrdual star for Avon was Bill Welch h scored once and along with Luke Kellam udge Porter and John McBride made tackles all over the field In this game Avon showed the sprrnt that is the trademark of every fighting Avon eleven Next on the schedule was the Aslan Flu which we battled for three weeks Two games were can celled Suffield and Wllbraham and the Avon team never regarned its early form After the flu we played powerful Williston to a 14 14 tre The Avon team had only practiced three days and was not rn top physrcal condition ln this game Bill Tracy and Billy Welch scored but the great line play of Ferrrer Rlckards and Phelps held Williston at bay Next year the prospects look good We have Pettrngrll Welch Nate Tracy and Mike Cunningham in the backlield and rn the line Rrckards and Bradley will be back There will need to be some rebuilding rn the lme but most likely Avon w1ll again be a power rn New England 'lang n - H . . . 1 ' ' 1 ' x C , - , J 1 . , . , .
