THE 1988 AVOCAN OUR PATH OF EXCELLENCE Presented By The Class Of 1988 Avoca Central School Avoca, New York 14809 Volume 61 OUR PATH OF EXCELLENCE I went for a walk, holding Mommy and Daddy’s hands. Not being so sure of myself, I held on tight. I didn’t know where I was going and 1 didn’t really care. When I came to a puddle, they picked me up and carried me over it. Running ahead my feet barely touched the ground. I stopped every few seconds to make sure I could see Mommy and Daddy; I didn’t want them to get lost. “Where are we going?” I would ask. “You will see soon enough,” they would say. “Are we there yet?” I was getting bored. I wanted to go my own way. “Can’t I go alone?” I would run ahead but soon I would stop to wait. It was good to know that they were right behind me. On and on we walked. My steps had become longer. I thought I knew a shortcut. All of a sudden I was lost. Then came Mom and Dad to pull me back onto the path. Soon I had developed my own pace. As I looked back, I was leaving Mom and Dad further and further behind. I began to like my independence. I raced for the end of the path, hoping it would soon come. Suddenly, the end was near. I could see it. Just a few more steps .... I had made it! The long journey now seemed so short. At the end of the path I had come to a fork which could lead me in two different directions. I knew if I went one way, it would take me back to the security I had always known. This path looked easy and smooth. I could not see the end of the other path, but I knew that it held all my dreams and goals. These were the things I had walked so far to reach. But I knew that in order to reach these things, I must step onto this path alone. This realization was suddenly so clear; I knew now where they had been leading me. I had been walking the path of excellence and it was one I wanted to continue to follow. I’m going for a walk now and I’m not quite sure where. But this time, I’m taking my first step alone. JKL It is not very often that we get the chance to express our appreciation for some of the most important people in our lives. They have guided us along the path from beginning to end, offering us their knowledge even though at times we may have thought we didn t need it. I here have been times when they wondered it we would ever make it; there have also been times when they’ve hated to let go. Well, we’ve finally made it, and we re proud to say that we couldn’t have gotten here without them. Thanks Mom and Dad. It is you, our parents, that we proudly dedicate the 1988 Avocan. These people greatly influ- enced us as administrator, teachers, advisors, and above all as friends. The efforts they all put forth to help and teach us were greatly appreci- ated and are sorely missed. APPRECIATION Two special people have helped us a great deal along our journey, over the rough spots and around some pretty tough bends. It seems that whenever we’ve found ourselves in a tight spot, they came through for us, directing us along the straight and narrow path. Mrs. Grover, our advisor, spent many days chasing people down in the halls for sale mon- ey, organizing our little excapades, and doing our dirty work. She’s always offerred that little extra push to “get out there and sell” or “better come in here and have a meeting.” Thank you, Mrs. Grover for all the extra hours you’ve spent making the path smoother for all of us. One parent in particular has gone beyond the call of duty and shown an extra special interest in our activities. She has been more than will- ing to sacrifice her time to help us out. Thanks to her talent, Cinderella’s Ball was a night that many of us will always remember. We, the Class of 1988, would like to express our deepest ap- preciation to Mrs. Ann Mattice for the concern and committment she has shown in guiding our sometimes difficult path. 15 16 i i « ■ JUNIORS Most of the time it is your parents, friends, or teachers who come to mind immediately, but once in a while it is a person whom we see every day but really don’t appreciate until he is no longer there. Such is the case with Mr. Chissom. He was a person who always had the time to help, the sensitivity to recognize a person who needed a little extra time, and the love of his job for the joy it could bring to oth- ers. We will miss “Chiz’ but we’ll never forget him; he is as much Avoca Central School for those who leave here as any other person we can or will remember. When we entered this course in September, we had the attitude that no obstacle was too great. However, this atti- tude soon changed. As we inched our way to the edge of the roof, we began to wonder how well we really trusted ourselves and each other. There were times when we even wondered, “What am I doing here?” We encountered many new experiences and overcame many fears. This is one class we will never forget, from holding back the tears while rappelling, to the many laughs over burnt eyelashes. For once we felt like more than just classmates. We learned about the trust and friendship we had in each other, and the new confidence we had gained in ourselves. Thanks for everything Mr. Peterson and Mr. Miller. 63 GROWTH 66 YEARBOOK STAFF Shannon Costello, Pam Wilson, Jill LeVes- que, Connie Miller, Janet Robords, Chris Murphy, Holly Plank, Robin Neely, Lauren Anderson, Staci Daniels, Deb Mat- tice, Dave Taylor, Dan Stewart, Corey Lat- timer, Jackie LeVesque, Randy Heard, Sta- cey Kropp, Steve Muchier, Heather Peard, Kristin Hunt, Julie Bennett.
