THE CLASS OF 1986 PRESENTS THE 1986 AVOCAN IS IT ENDING OR JUST BEGINNING? AVOCA CENTRAL SCHOOL AVOCA, N.Y. 14809 VOL. 59 Where does the road begin and where does it end, if indeed it ever does? When we began our journey, the road was primarily straight with only a few bends to follow. As we travelled, we discovered forks and learned to rely on ourselves and the advice of experienced trav- ellers to decide which way was best to follow. We've learned to appreciate this road and everything it has to offer. We'll meet hardships in our travels and learn to climb over the hills and to endure the rain and pebbles that may fall into our shoes. But also at any moment someone may turn over a new leaf and learn more about the road of life. At any mo- ment the sun may break through the clouds and show us a new di- rection. If someone hastens down this road, not only do they over- look these fortunes, but they can stumble and fall. Everyone must learn to walk at their own pace and not yield when faced with un- knowns, but to keep walking until they reach their destiny. For us, the road has run its course but at that end, there are various paths for each of us to make into our own new roads. Occasionally our paths may cross or may even join others and start new begin- nings. Wherever our roads may lead, we will always remember where our journey began and hold our school years special, whenever our roads may begin or end. 2 lntrcxiuction MATT J. BUCK JEFFREY L. B E G I N N I N G S MR. GARRY BILLINCTON MR. TED BINLEY As we cross the bridge from student life to adulthood, we have to remember that we're not going from the beginning to the end of anything. Bridges don't start or stop journeys; they're only tools that we need to carry us over troubled waters. This year as we started across the bridge to adulthood, we were very lucky to have four new travelers join us. The first two, Julie Billington and Kyle Anderson stepped onto our bridge the first day of September. A little later Olav Krutzfeldt and Pam Dale joined our group. Even though these four were not with us on the long adventurous trip leading up to this crossing, they do share all the joy, happiness, and even fear that this final crossing contains. As we walk hand in hand across the bridge we know that we're firmly bonded together not only as Seniors and the Class of '86 but as friends forever and that's a very special relationship for all of us. A new beginning that Avoca and the Class of '86 has seen this year is the new administra- tion and new additions to our class. These new people have added a great deal to our journey down the road of life. First of all, we would like to welcome Mr. Billington as an experienced traveler. Although he started working at Avoca Central last February, we would like to acknowledge the hard work that he has put forth and the obstacles he has overcome to make this school a better place of learning. Because of his dedication our journey was a little smoother this year. As principal of Avoca Central School, Mr. Binley has shown a great deal of authority by changing traditional rules that affect the student body which has led to a more organized environment. In addition to this, Mr. Binley has tolerated much rebellion from the student body because of these bends and forks in our road. He has tried to help the student body understand why these rules were made. Once again, our road was smoothed out for us. 14 New Beginnings Throughout high school we are encour- aged to think independently and to ac- cept challenges and turn them into goals. Mrs. Slovak has helped us do this in the classroom, class activities and yearbook. Not only has she given us direction, but she has been a leaning post as well. We hold great admiration for this teach- er. We will never forget the fun times we've had in ski club and the classroom - trying to tempt her with Whatchamacal- lit candy bars! For these reasons we would like to convey our affection and thanks for her guidance by dedicating our 1986 Avocan to Mrs. Jo Slovak. D E D I C A T I O N Dedication 15 A P P R E C I A T I O N These two men have gone above and beyond their call of duty. They've influenced us in their own personal way. Not only have they helped us learn, but they've given us enthusiasm and motivation to reach goals that we never thought were attainable. As an advisor, Mr. Doty not only organized our class activities but also endured our short comings as well. He has been the man behind the scenes running errands and planning fund raisers on his own time, not to mention being chef for our Dead Chicken Barbeque. Even though we are a small crew he endured our laxness and never gave up on us. Instead, he kept pushing us to accomplish the most possible. As a teacher, Mr. Miller has lead us through many parts of the world from Afro-Asia through American History to repelling down the side of a building! We would like to thank him for treating us as indiviuals and being able to turn anyone's sadness into a smile. There's no one else who can tell a joke quite like he can! Thank you for your motivation and friendship. We deeply appreciate the time and efforts of Mr. Clare Doty and Mr. John Miller. 16 Appreciation CLASSES T BELANGER J. BENNETT E. BISHOP C BURNHAM D. I can tell you from personal experience that this idea is totally wrong. I have been in Art for the past four years now and I enjoy it very much. Art is a very challenging course. It involves creativ- ity, ideas, hard work, and most of all a re- warding feeling when you finish a project. I will miss Art Club at Avoca very much. Brad MacDougal 68 Clubs Row 1: M. Storm, J. Student Council has been a part of the Avoca Central School System for many years but with this school year a dramatic change in direction has been attempted. This group has taken the Council outside of the somewhat traditional limi- tations of just school related activities and has tried to become a community oriented group. For example, we have held community wide Halloween parades and parties, tours of the school and buffet luncheons for the senior Citizens Group and a Canned Food Drive for less fortunate families. In the spring we hope to continue our efforts with several more community activities. Being a first year advisor I have to been extremely grateful to the members of the Council. They are dedicated, helpful, concerned, and most of all tolerant. Their main goal seems to be what they can do for others not what can be done for them. I consider it a real privilege to be a part of this group. Mr. Hargrave s T U D E N T C 0 U N C 1 L Clubs 71 s E N I O R B A N D Row 1: S. Daniels, D. Button, J. Peck, P. Wilson, J. Hughes, Row 2: J. Fink Last spring when we were chosen to be on the yearbook staff, it seemed like it would be something exciting to do in our spare time. Boy, were we in for a shocking surprise. We soon learned to make time and to expect anything to happen and that even with a large staff, there was always more work to be done. But overall, we cherished being able to help create memories in this yearbook that will never be forgotten. It's been a momumental job trying to organize the pages and meet deadlines. DEADLINES!! Just the sound of that word sends chills down our spines. It sounds like someone hanging from a noose, which is exactly how we felt at times. It is the most horrible word in the English language while you're trying to (plot, draw, sketch, plan) layouts, find missing pictures, type and fit copy, and a multitude of other things. Not only are there pages to design, but advertisements to collect as well. This year we have tripled the amount of ads sold last year and because of this we've been able to add a few special pages. Jennie and Kim were instrumental in keeping track of all these ads and the money. Working together has brought moments of frustrations and anxiety, but there have also been enjoyable ones as well. Some of us have learned valuable lessons that will last a life time. We're sure Jeannie will never shoot another role of film without first making sure there is film in the camera. Brad will know better than to reach into dark cubby holes because you may not know what is in them. Never again will almost one thousand dollars of advertisement checks be lost in the school safe. Nor will Denelle and Dawn ever drop the tiny freshmen pictures again and again and again and again. And we will never be able to solve the mystery of the missing class picture which was last seen on Mrs. Slovak's desk. Getting ads also proved to be an unuaual task. It involved anything from receiving unique artwork form the eccentric Walter S. Taylor to leaving McDonald's gift certificates and candy as a tip at the Ramada. In spite of all the hassles and frustrations, we have had one goal in common, to make this the best yearbook ever. After all the work is done and we can sit back and look through the pages, we'll treasure the memories it holds. We hope that you enjoy it as well. 1 V A R S I T Y B A S E B A L L Row 1: E. The 1985 Avoca Tigers finished the sea- son with 4 wins and 9 losses. The goal of the team was to make secitonals for the first time in a few years. This was accom- plished. The Tigers seeded 15th in the sectionals and played a very strong Bu- tania Wotre Dame team that was seeded 2nd. After leading through the 5th in- ning, the Tigers eventually lost by a close of 4-3 score. This game was a very positive experience for the young Tiger (5 sophmores, 1 Freshman) starters. The wrestling team of 1985-86 has I believe added one more necessary characteristic to the sport and its successes at Avoca - that is HEART. The team has shown maturity beyond its age - actually what more can be expected from the educational process . . . the assignment is given, the practices are conducted, the examination takes place and it is the students responsibility of action together with that of the coaching staff which equals success. It could fit any subject area, couldn't it? My young men have seemingly taken the responsibility seriously. Shake hands and come out fighting. Row 1: R. Smith, T. Lysczyn, R, Derick, Row 2: D. The value of this flower is worth its weight in gold; however, its importance is never really considered until its very existence is almost gone. When will we really know if it has just broken ground and dawning to reach its highest peak or fading swiftly to its ultimate destination? Is is just beginning or is it ending? In its last stage, every dried flower holds a seed which with a clear sky, may bud into a new beginning. Even when the sun is covered by gray skies, its rays of hope may still peep through forming an array of colors and light. So keep reaching for the skies; even though the amber rose is gone, you'll find your pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Dawn Fox IN MEMORY OF . . .
