THE CLASS OF 4985 PRESENTS: fHE 1985 AVOCAN “Send In The Clowns' Avoca Central School Avoca, New York 14809 Volume 58 2 Not just another pretty face! Who does your hair? The new camouflage look. Life here at Avoca is often considered the life of a clown. Nothing is as it seems and everyone is always trying to make everyone laugh. Yes, clowns do seem to make us happier. Here at Avoca we have our abundance of clowns. There are those clowns who try to make us learn (the teachers), those who refuse to learn (all students), and finally the clowns that drive everyone nuts (the underclassmen). The Class of 1985 would like to take you on a journey through the typical life of us clowns at A.C.S. We hope that you enjoy this trip and have many laughs in the process. And now-------SEND IN THE CLOWNS! DEDICATION During our four years of high school we have had many more downs than ups. For our first two years we had new advisors and weren’t the most ambitious bunch of people. Last year we were put into the hands of someone who was bound and determined to make something of us. Although he has pushed (and sometimes shoved!) us, we’ve made it. Without his guidance and authority, we wouldn’t have made it this far. So for all the times you could have given up on us but didn’t, and for all the times you helped us when we should have done things ourselves, we, the Class of 1985, dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. John Welc. 4 APPRF.CIATION Few people have been as influential on our class as these two individuals. They have been there when the times have been hard and pushed all of us to be the very best we can. Each of them has made a unique part of their personality a part of us. Therefore, we, the Class of 1985 extend our deepest appreciation to Mr. John Miller and Mrs. Jo Slovak. 5 Mr. Henry Cleeves This year Avoca Central School lost some very dear people. Mr. Henry Cleeves retired in February after several years of being our superintendent. He has become a good friend to all of us over the years and he will be missed very much. We wish him the best of luck. Mr. Richard Harrison Mr. Harrison left us in December. He was a great teacher who was always willing to go that extra step in order to insure everyone understood the material. He is a special person to everyone he knew and will be missed by everyone. We wish him the best in his new career. We would like to take this time to welcome Mr. Gary Billington to our school as our new superintendent. Mr. Billington comes to us from Moravia High School. He has two children who will be coming to Avoca later on. Already Mr. Billington has done a great job in adjusting to life here at Avoca. We look forward to having him as a good friend. We also hope that Mr. Billington and his family will enjoy this school as much as we have. We wish the Billington’s the best of luck in Avoca. 6 ELEMENTARY 7 KINDERGARTEN Row 1: T. Crooks, S. She was there when the boys missed that last second shot and lost the game and she has listened when the band has made that one tiny mistake taking a trophy away from them. The loss of this special lady is not only felt by her family and friends but by the entire school, the sports programs, and other numerous activities that she was involved with in the community. Because this special lady was a major part of our lives here at Avoca, the Class of ’85 would like to dedicate this page of our yearbook to Mrs. Marge Rodbourn as a small token to express our sympathy to her family and loved ones. She will be missed by all of us. 26 ACTIVITIES 27 STUDENT COUNCIL V Row 1: D. Evarts, K. Warner, K. Pipe, B. Robinson. Row 2: D. Button, D. Fox, M. Lewis, P. Raduziner, L. Taylor. Row 3: D. It gives us a chance to meet other people and do something outdoors in the long, cold winter months. The Ski Club is a great organization and if you like to ski, we encourage you to join. 35 LATIN CLUB Row 1: K. Evia, B. Peck, B. Robinson. Row 2: S. Huang, K. Lattimer, J. Peck, D. Button, D. Fox. As the lights went down and the music started, every- one was in the mood to dance. During the night the royal family was selected. Chosen for King and Queen were Brian Davis and Beth Wilson; the Prince and Princess were Jeff Rodbourn and Pam Willis; the Host and Hostess were Clay Lattimer and Julie Robords. Everyone had a wonderful evening, but the night ended all too quickly. Clay and Julie dancing up a storm 42 JUNIOR PLAYS The Junior plays were a huge success due to the hard work of everyone in the class. This year we tried something different and had student directors. They were Linette Hopkins and Dorothy Davis and they did an excellent job. The plays were “Blabbermouth”, “Mirrors”, and “On With The Shrew”. It was a unique experience and we will remember it always, even Mr. Hall’s demanding practices. Is Beth making you laugh again, Kelly? I need to see your I.D.! Allstate — the good hands people. I’m not moving from this spot! This is from the bottom of my heart, Daryl! HALLOWEEN Little rabbit fu-fu Miss America Avoca ROCKERS Snow White and the Six Dwarfs? Show us your stuff, Michael When Halloween rolls around its time for everyone to go crazy. This year the school halls were filled with eveything from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Michael Jackson! Everyone had a great time figuring out who everyone was. The Drama Class also had a spookhouse for the elementary which added to the scares. In general it was an all Hall-ows Eve. 47 and you call yourself a TEACHER? YEARBOOK STAFF Row 1: P. Willis, M. Johndro, K. Warner, B. Robinson. Row 2: K. Lattimer, B. Peck, K. Evia, Mrs. Slovak, N. Miller, S. Meese. Last spring when the 1985 yearbook staff was chosen, we weren’t sure of what to expect. We figured there would be pictures pasted on a page and that was it. Boy, were we surprised! The pictures didn’t always fit, deadlines seemed to creep up on us, and sometimes we couldn’t figure out what to do with any page. But, despite everything, being on yearbook staff has been a great experience. We all had the chance to work together to give you the best yearbook we possible could. We hope that you have many laughs and that you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. 48 GIRLS SOCCER Row 1: B. Button, D. Button, B. Robinson, B. Peck, K. Evia, P. Willis, C. First, they create spirit among the students and spectators. Another important responsibility of the cheerleaders is for crowd control. Cheerleaders add color, style, and leadership to the Avoca basketball games. They try to encourage participation of fans, thus creating school spirit. Cheerleaders are judged by the opposing cheerleading advisor on a scale of 1 to 10. The squad with the highest score at the end of the season is awarded with a trophy. The scores are based on image, sportsmanship, floor cheers, and spirit. With the help of their new uniforms, they do add color, style, and leadership. VARSITY BASKETBALL Row 1: C. Sullivan, P. Finally we are in high school!!” This meant participating in sports, going to dances, and being able to pick on all the junior high students. We had Daryl Evarts as president, Bonnie Robinson as vice president, Kim Lattimer as treasurer, Kelly Evia as Secretary, Beth Peck and Mary Johndro as student council representatives and Mr. Yoder and Mr. Rawson to lead us through this very hectic year. Our first project as a class was the infamous Freshman Calendar. It was really enjoyable, especially making the money. The next thing we did to raise money was to have a dance. That was the best thing about the whole year. As sophomores we elected Beth Peck as president, B. J. Ingraham as vice president, Kim Lattimer as treasurer, Kirk Pipe as secretary, and Keith Warner as student council representative. We lost Mr. Yoder as an advisor but gained Miss Soper to guide us through this year. We were all a bit confused, but we finally pulled together when we sold M M’s, making a nice little profit on the side. In the spring we held another dance which was a major success. Our junior year was extremely busy. We were assigned brand new advisors, Mr. Miller and Mr. Welc and we had several fund raisers. Our illustrious leaders were B. J. Ingraham as president, Kelly Evia as vice president, Kim Lattimer as treasurer, Beth Peck as secretary, and Mary Johndro and Keith Warner as student council representatives. Our first project was a dance (another success!!) followed by a circus (fitting activity for a bunch of clowns!). We still needed to earn money for our senior trips and our yearbook so the next thing we sponsored was a dinner. We raised quite a bit of money and at the same time had a lot of fun cooking. Our last class project was the Junior-Senior Prom. It was exciting working together to transform the gym into a magic wonderland and make the prom a night to remember. And now we come to our last year. It’s hard to believe it, but we are SENIORS!! In our last year we elected Catherine Thomas as president, Danny Hammond as vice president, Beth Peck as secretary, Kim Lattimer as Treasurer, and Mary Johndro and Keith Warner as student council representatives. Our first class project was the first dance of the year which boasted the biggest turnout in years. Next we went to a Buffalo Bills football game and then to Toronto for two of our three senior trips. On both of these trips it was great fun just being together as a class and doing things together (shopping, for the girls, and looking at girls, for the guys!). But most of all, our senior year was a time of remembrance of all our high school years. The sports, dances, fund raisers, and friendships that were made will be with us always. Our years here at Avoca were definitely the best years. DOROTHY JEAN DAVIS DARYL SCOT EVARTS KELLY SUE EVIA 78 JIM FEELY TIMOTHY BRIAN FITZGERALD DAWN MARIE FAIRBROTHER JEFFREY J. GILBERT GISELA R. Santa’s little elf. 86 Take the picture and I’ll drill ya! SENIOR TRIP Is he looking at another girl, Kelly? What are you trying to hide, Nanette? The senior trip was great fun for all who attended. We left at 5:30 In the morning and although the bus ride was very long, we found ways to entertain ourselves. Some of us played cards with Mr. Welc and Mr. Miller, while the rest of us enjoyed the various sights along the way. We finally arrived at the Toronto Zoo at 1:00 and everyone was eager to get off the bus and walk. We spent the morning at the zoo imitating the various animals, Tim Lysyczyn’s talents really came into being at the monkey cage and Cathy Thomas found a new friend (a gorilla), who chased her around his cage. The next stop was Young Street and the Eaton Center. Most of the girls enjoyed the mall, while the guys found Young Street very educational and intriging. The CN Tower was our next encounter. We went half way to the top and some of the braver ones even went all the way up. The day was misty and consequently we couldn’t see that much. Finally the time we had all been waiting for arrived — DINNER! We ate at Ed’s Warehouse and we were amazed at how much different it was from anything we had ever seen. Some say that this was the best part of the trip. After the meal we all had there, everyone certainly was full and a little less active (at least for the time being!). In spite of our hectic day, our return trip was just as active as our morning ride. Although we were all exhausted from our arduous adventure. It was a trip that will stay with us for years to come.
