It is a two way street. That, more than anything else, is what we have learned from these two peo- ple. They have shown us that teachers are human, no different from us. They have shown us that they care and that we must care too. Their dedication and loyalty to our class has been greatly appreciated. Their caring and friendship has made our school years much more enjoyable. And that, we believe, is what education should be. We, the Class of 79 therefore dedicate our yearbook to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Slovak. ) ' V Appreciation Most of us look on his classes with happiness-that they’re over. Few of us, however, can recall when we have ever met a finer teacher. Some of us are fortunate enough to be able to call him a good friend. Few of us can recall when we have met a finer man. In all our troubles, in all our differences, in all the times we even hated him, he never stopped caring. For this we will be forever grateful. We may meet finer men and we may meet finer teachers, but few of us will ever meet anyone who has found the near perfect combination of the two. Therefore, we, the Class of ’79, give our yearbook in grateful appreciation to Mr. Terry Peard. David R. Wilson James Robert Brandow Dennis W. Hamilton Michael Lee Fox Cheryl B. Athletic banquet I lie ACS Student Council is a vital organization in this school, or at least it could be. Unfortunately, the Council is long on po- tential, but short on use. But this year has seen the best Student Council ever to hit Avoca. We have a whole new group of officers and a brand new advisor, Mr. Henry Cleeves. With what I consider to be a really super group of individuals, I am looking forward to a highly successful year or, as has become our motto, the best ever. Michael Hopkins, President Row I: L. I have to feel that as a whole most of the girls really cared about learn- ing and working as a team. Varsity Zeiwis In a season which started indoors in the gym and then continued out in the icy winds and finally ended on the baking courts, this team surprised itself a bit by beating defend- ing champion Hammondsport in the 1st league match and rolled from there through ten con- secutive wins. The team itself was character- ized by good balance and depth rather than individual stars and this championship repre- sents the contributions of all the members. Softball The 1977-78 Softball season was full of frustration, disappointment and occassionally a little sunshine. The unpredictable weather and some of the “diamonds’ made it frus- trating. We were a team loaded with talent but were not willing to use it to its fullest po- tential and letting attitudes interfere with a total team effort made it disappointing. The bright spot was that amidst our problems we achieved a 5-4 record. A few girls can be proud of the hard work they put into achiev- ing this record for their team. Row I: K. O'toole, S. Houser. A. This year was highlighted by a very strong showing at the county meet where Avoca outscored all other class B-C teams. Avoca moved ahead to sectionals by quali- fying in 6 events. Vivian Davis led the squad to its first place finish at the Section 5 meet with a record shattering leap of 5'5 in the high jump. New school records were also set by Julie Gilbert in the 880 yd. run and by the mile relay team of Kin Luckenbach, Lisa Snyder, Lori Alsheimer, and Julie Arquiette. Vivian Davis topped off a fine sea- son at the New York State meet with a jump of 5'6 which set a new school record again and clinched the 4th place medal. Guess what the senior section needs to be redone. Hey Mr. Crotty! You know the pages you did last Friday, that have to be changed can you do them over? Before 8th period today? Hey Mr. Crotty! Can you paint the cutouts a different color? Hey Mr. Crotty! The cutouts are too small can you do them again? Before Friday? As yearbook advisor I had to go to Mr. Crotty many times this year and I don't know if he understands just how much I appreciate him. It’s nice to have a person like Mike just down the hall to call on when you need a favor. He makes this school much nicer to be in and the staff and I just want to take this page to say Thanks.
