We, the Class of 1970, proudly present to you At ocan CLASS COLORS: Red Silver CLASS MOTTO: “Life is a picture, paint it well.” CLASS FLOWER: Lily-of-the-Valley Avoca, New York To keep an institution running smoothly many ser- vices are rendered behind the scenes. Such services have been an important factor in maintaining a pleas- ant atmosphere where we have spent our many years of learning. The class of 1970 takes pride and pleasure in ex- pressing its sincere appreciation to Mr. Clarence Chis- som. For him happiness is a sail full of wind. There has been no one person who has helped our class more than he has. He spent many long, hard Saturdays working with us either in a potato field or a vineyard, not to mention all the class activities and projects in which he has been involved with us. Not only is he our advisor and teacher, he is our friend. It is with pleasure that the Class of 1970 dedicates this, our yearbook, to Mr. Walter E. Peterson. Principal Henry CleeVes Today authority of every kind is being challenged, in fact, the very idea of authority has come into serious question. We do not question that authority of all kinds needs watching, but we do ques- tion the complete breakdown of authority which leads to anarchy. History has demonstrated that the destruction of authority leads to anarchy, which leads to power by dictators. In this process it is al- ways the common man who is hurt socially, physically, and emotion- ally. It is our hope that the next generation will use “authority” wisely. We trust that you will accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, but will have the courage to change things that can and should be changed. We hope that this school has taught you to distin- guish one from the other. These past four years have been as much an experience for us as they have been for you, of that you can be sure. Our first year, as freshmen, was our introduction to high school—we wandered through the halls without direction, in awe of the upper classmen, envying them their status. We also had our first attempts at money-making in our dance. Who was to know what this would lead to??? Oh, boy . .. sophomores! Another step up, only two years to go! And during this year, we were given a goal; when it came to discussing our future class trip, the conclusion we reached was, “NOT Washington!” (Bermuda??) Money-making led us right and left. And we had some great times in our classes—English 10 and our own version of “A Midsum- mer’s Night Dream”; World History and our first term paper; and ... Then we were Juniors ... countdown! More money-making activities. The potato and grape fields will never be forgotten .. .just ask our broken backs! Cries of “Yes, Sir!” rang out in response to Mr. Peterson’s drills. Ideas for swelling our treasury appeared- some worked, for instance, light bulbs; some didn’t, soccer game refreshment sales, and our S3.00 paper drive, which fed our driving team. Parties Stowie’s, Candy’s, Kath’s, and Katie’s. And what about Moose’s “surprise party”? Hey, Moose, what’s a Spaghetti Supper? And then the Junior-Senior Banquet . . . Here we are, at the top. Kind of wishing we weren’t so close to the end,yet waiting for whatever the future will bring. Yes, we’ll miss you, ACS. We hope you feel the same for us. With affection, CLASS OF ’70 LARRY A. We all remember the teacher we fell in love with and the teacher who was so unbearably strict-an- other parent. All they do is ask questions: What’s the ans- wer to No. 455? Why isn’t your homework done? But teachers also ask some questions like: Who won the game last night? Is there anything I can do? etc. Teachers advise us in our class and club projects. They always seem to know when we should be put in our place and when we should be allowed to speak our minds. Believe it or not, teachers can be good friends. And believe it or not, teachers, we, the students, do appreciate you for everything. Mrs. Shanley Mrs. Bartlett Miss Shults 23 Th ird Grade Would ou Believe. . . Our Faculty? . . . This is the fifth year that Avoca has been involved in the B.O.C.E.S. program in Hornell. There are nineteen students who are attending the Vocational School this year. Six Se- niors attend in the morning and thirteen Juniors go in the afternoon. Don Barrett is the only one who is taking Drafting II. Several boys are starting Conservation. Wiley Cruser, George Mullikin, and Neil Partridge are taking Conservation I; Bruce Sager is in Conservation II. Four girls are enrolled in Cosmetology. They are: Karen Kellogg, Joyce Robbins, Cindy Sullivan, and Roxanne Kellogg. Roxanne is taking Cosmetology II. Several of the boys are taking Auto Mechanics. They are Jim VanWormer, Rick and Jim Gor- don, Rick Dieter and Mike Hughes. Dieter and Hughes, both seniors, are in Auto Mechanics II. Bill Hogan and Kenny Parsels take Auto Body. David Cleland is enrolled in Office Machines and Teresa Shaut is taking Office Practice. Bev- erly Sullivan is learning to become a nurse’s aide. Avoca has become increasingly interested in this com- paratively new program. The students seem to be very en- thusiastic about their vocational courses and the opportuni- ties they hope these courses will afford them in the future. 34 Bruce Bev Bill and Ken Theresa Roxanne David Rick and Jim Mike and Rick “Eat it or else!” A bay at ACS Blondes in a test tube? Being Involved in Activities 65 Student Council Elections Dave introduces the candidates. V for Victory! Julie and her supporters. The procession is led by the band. Murph gets a free ride. The Student Council, being the student body’s voice, should be used to its fullest extent, but too often it is not. We hope that with each passing year more students realize this, and exercise this privilege, to bring more problems to light, and allow your government to work for you, not com pete with you, nor lie completely stagnant. Like a pool, the Student Council must remain active to maintain life. Also, like a pool, the “ripples” created by action taken today reach into the future of ACS. For this reason, decisions must be weighed carefully, and you, as students, should be willing to comply with the Student Council’s action, as it is the representative of the student body. It is your govern- ment, functioning for you, and it is up to you, as students, o use it to its fullest capacity. 66 ROW I: J. Boisvert, Sec.; D. Sager, Treas.; D. Boisvert, Pres.; N. These thirteen years have gone by so fast. It seems such a short time ago that we started kindergarten and now it is almost over. All of us were so frightened on that first day. It was a big step in our lives. And soon we are about to take another big step. Many of us will be out on our own with our whole future staring straight at us. There will be many decisions which we will have to make on our own. Graduation is also a sad time of our lives. It is a time when we begin to realize that things aren’t ever going to be exactly the same again. Our friends, who we have known for so long, will each go their separate ways. We appreciate the guidance and friendship of all our teachers and we look back on our school years with fond memories. The Editor Happiness Is a Finished l eairbook «
