THE AVOCAN We, the Senior Class of Avoca Central School, proudly present the 1965 Avocan. MOTTO: Let each become all that he is capable of being. FLOWER: Yellow Rose COLORS: Gold and Black Avoca, New York Who has counseled us through our four years of high school? Who has shared our grief and enjoyed our triumphs Who has aided our class in achieving our many goals, both scholastic and social? Who has guided the government of ACS through the Student Council? Who has been our tireless mathematics instructor, homeroom teacher, and class advisor? Who but Mr. ALBERT M. BAKEMAN, to whom we now dedicate the 1965 AVOCAN DEDICATION The Seniors of the class of 1965 wish to present the AVOCAN, in appreciation to Mr. Richard Fisher. Mr. Fisher has helped us gain a personal pride in our studies, and has instilled in us the importance of our education. He has counseled us with our many Junior High problems. But most of all, he has been a friend as well as a teacher, and has conveyed a richer, deeper meaning to our background in social studies. APPRECIATION We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Gertrude Mattoon Oxx for her outstanding 26 years of faithful service as head of the cafeteria staff. Her endless hours spent in preparing meals for the students and teachers is deeply appreciated, and, although she has left us, we will never forget her. IN APPRECIATION AWitM SZKAtlOK thor CARL W. This year, our counselors were Mrs. Edwards and Mr. Bakeman. Our class officers were: President, Royce Jones; Vice-President, Pam Mur- phy; Secretary, Susan Wingate; Treasurer, Barbara Burton; Student Council Rep., Carole Putman; Alternate, Marilyn MacBride; Athletic Association Rep., William Hewson; and Alter- nate, Janice Bates. Our Sophomore dance, Swinging Safari , was held on October 26 and we prepared a marriage booth as an added attraction. Lyle Akins and Ronnie Saxton entertained us with their guitars during intermission. We voted on the design and color of our Junior rings. We voted for gold rings with black onyx stones. JUNIOR YEAR 1963-1964 Now we're big Juniors, only one year from our goal. Our counselors were Mrs. Edwards and Mr. Bakeman. Our class officers were: President, William Hewson; Vice-President, Barbara Burton; Secretary, Susan Wingate; Treasurer, Marilyn MacBride; Student Council Rep., Dick Hargrave; Alternate, Janice Bates; Athletic Association Rep., Carl Dockstader; and Alternate, Bud Sutfin. We held our annual Spaghetti Supper May 2, and we had a great number present. Our dance, Hawaiian Holiday , was held and we received a great number there also. We selected the candidates, Pam Murphy, and Royce Jones to run for Student Council President for 1964-1965. This was the first year the school used the public voting machines to determine the President for Student Council. Pam Murphy was elected for this high honor. SENIOR YEAR 1964-1965 Well, at last we have reached the coveted position of Seniors! Much has happened during the short years at Avoca Central, but we now are facing the year that will determine the future of our lives. Our counselors were, again, reliable Mrs. Edwards and Mr. Bakeman. Our class officers were: President, Dick Hargrave; Vice-President, Bud Sutfin; Secretary, Janice Bates; Treasurer, Marilyn MacBride; Student Council Rep., Carl Dockstader; Alternate Bar- bara Burton; Athletic Association Rep., Larry Field; and Alternate, Kathy Hale. Our Maga- zine Drive started early this year with Bud Sutfin as the Chairman. Our two Captains were Dick Hargrave and Sheila Noble. Although the majority of us worked extra hard, our goal was not made, and Dick Hargrave's team won with the most money entered. 2 rtjvss£s ROW ONE: B. Meese, V. Towner, C. Todd, J. Wraight, J. Voting by machine. The Student Council elections were operated differently this year. There were the usual speeches, banners, noise, and the parade, but we were given the chance to vote with actual voting machines. This was quite new to most of us, and we found the oppor- tunity rewarding in that we learned more about how town, state, and national elec- tions are conducted. We, at Avoca Central, wish to thank Mr. French, Supervisor of the town of Avoca, and Mr. Arnold, Town Clerk, for their cooperation in lending us a voting booth. Regular members of the election board were present to assist with the regis- tration of each voter and to tabulate the re- sults. We also appreciate Mr. Thompson's efforts in supplying us with transportation to and from the voting room and for giving us this unique opportunity. 41 STUDENT COUNCIL It's just more than we little boys can take! THE AVOCAN Any successful yearbook requires plenty of hard work and expert planning. We of the AVOCAN staff have worked diligently, and we feel with pride, that this is the best yearbook yet presented. We were very fortunate to have excep- tional art talent, and this resulted in our strik- ing cover and neat dividers. We had a heavy schedule for seniors al- ways have plenty to do in their last year. Be- fore we realized it, the Dec. 21 deadline loomed before us, and we hurried to complete our remaining few pages. Our labor has been rewarded, for we know that this yearbook, thanks to Mrs. Frank- lin's careful guidance, is a success, and in each of us, there is a feeling of pride in a job well done. Now that we look back, it seems only recently that we first entered school, working our way toward . that one destination, graduation. We will soon reach that goal, and it is then that our education starts to pay us dividends. It is not only the educational knowledge we have acquired, but also poise, honesty, good manners and dignity. These, our teachers have instilled upon us to help us become stronger individuals and better Americans. We will soon be leaving, but each of us will never forget our high school years with our fellow students, the faculty and 'Old Avoca’ . The Editor 79
