We, the class of 1951, proudly dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Nina Walker, because of her patience, under- standing, and Integrity on our behalf. We shall always remember her for her never falling assistance and inspiration. rrf 1 j a Back when the only education available was the survival of the fittest. Miss Ann Parker went from house to house teaching the youth of Bight Mile Tree. Later she divided off a section of her barn and this was the school. The first real schoolhouse In Avoca was the Griswold Jewelry Store and taught up to 8th grade. In 1870, a wooden school building 40'x60' was built on Chase Street. The school was admitted to University of the State of New York as a Junior School In 1893. June 1896 saw the first Regents class graduated from Avoca High School. In 1901, Avoca School was recognized as a first class High School and by 1902 the building had been enlarged, a flagpole purchased, and the 70 book library increased sufficiently. The school was again enlarged In 1923 when the Union Free School building was completed on Oliver Street. By 1936 the enrollment had grown to over 300 in a school built for no more than 275. This same year the Board of Ed- ucation was given authority to Investigate centralization of the surrounding districts of Avoca, Howard, Wheeler, Prattsburg, Frement, Cohoeton and Bath. The contract for the building of our new school was given to Charles A. Vezzetl, Inc. of Palisades, N.J. and the building was begun in December, 1937 being ready for admittance of pupils In September 1938.
