The group marched at Auburn Fair and at the State Fair. They were in a Parade at Kendallville and received first prize of one hundred and five dollars in cash prizes. As they entered Avilla High School, there were forty ambitious freshmen clinging to the ninth rung. With Paul Schilling as their sponsor, they stepped through their freshman year and advanced to the tenth round of the ladder as happy sophomores. Thirty-eight sophomores, under the guidance of Mr. Marshall, ordered their class sweaters, which were black with a red letter trimmed in white. Climbing to the eleventh step, thirty-four jun- iors, with Mr. Marshall as their guide, had as money-making projects a magazine campaign, Christmas card sales, the selling of concessions at school activities, serving of banquets, ice cream socials, and their class play, entitled Finders Creepers. During this year the class selected their class rings and class flower, the American Beauty Rose. Thirty-two seniors ascended to the last step of the ladder as they pictured a much broader view. While on the top of the ladder they presented the senior play, Papa Says No! They had their pictures taken, selected and received announce- ments and name cards, chose their class motto, The Higher We Climb, the Broader the View, and worked diligently on the 1954 PANTHER. At last on April 28, the entire senior class left by bus for their long awaited trip to Washington, New York City, and Niagara Falls. After ten days, thirty-two exhausted people returned to Avilla. Three more important dates still loomed on their horizon— May 16, Baccalaureate; May 18, Senior Night; and May 19, Commencement. At the close of these exercises all seniors bade fond farewells to the school, faculty, and friends. Their view was indeed broadened. Now as adults they must start to climb Life ' s Ladder. Are they following their motto by climbing higher and broadening their view? Merle Troyer climbed high and broadened his view by developing so powerful a telescope that he can see afl the planets in the Universe. Let us focus this telescope over our home town of Avilla, Indiana. There we see Martha Dressier experimenting with a pill which she thinks will make her grow, Jim Campbell trying to keep young by practicing cross country, and Charles Marti teaching Driver ' s Training at Avilla High School. At Sandy ' s Beauty Shop, there is Sandra Ross. Her famous Light and Bright Hair Bleach has been selling by the millions of bottles. We see Junior Bianski has made something of himself. He is President of Sinclair Refining Company located in Avilla. Betty France has retired from being an Esquire model and is now manufacturing hose for Junior ' s gas pumps. Appearing in the Opera House is Barbara Probst, a famous opera star. Since we find no other member of the class in or near Avilla, we turn it south to Richmond, where we find Nancy Worman residing, because she couldn ' t decide whether it was Tom, Dick, or Harry. As our telescope scans farther south, across the hills of Kentucky, we find Lou Kostielney, a missionary. She became very much interested in hillbillies after her appearance in Itchin ' to Get Hitched. Our telescope circles toward the north. There are Mary Jo Shoudel, whd owns a string of grocery stores in northern Indiana and in Michigan, and Leon Meyer, who is one of the spokes in the wheel that makes Henry ' s Ford go around. We turn toward Chicago. There are Dan Whonsetler and Edna Lee Iddings wrestling in the Chicago Arena. In New York Carolin Schneider is the editor of the NEW YORK TIMES, while starring on Broadway is Arlene Moor, the leading lady of Ed Duehmig ' s big musical hit, I Don ' t Care. Jane Garman and Jean Schenher are still walking the sidewalks in front of a dormitory at West Point. Focused on Washington, D.C., there is Max Crist, the President of the United States, adding a new addition to the White House so there will be room for his twelfth child. In Minnesota, there is Carl Diehm playing basketball with the Minneapolis Lakers. As the telescope scans the southwest country, we notice Joe Gadomski, a care- taker, raking leaves at the school for homeless girls in Arkansas, Arley Angel operating a gas station in the Painted Desert, and Jane Hartsock and Opsy Hatton running the Double H Dude Ranch in Texas. In Hollywood we hear that Nancy Allread has taken over Hedda Hopper ' s gossip column, and Delores Tucker is still waiting for her contract with M.G.M.. Now we turn the telescope across the China Seas toward Hong Kong, where Delores Vanderbosh is trying to open a dance hall in that city. As we point the telescope toward the planets, we focus on Mars, where we find Max Whonsetler farming with all his little Martian farmers. After scanning the Universe we have found all the Seniors but Duane Keck and Jack Wright, who made an experimental trip to the sun, and haven ' t been heard from since. Indeed the Class has lived up to its motto.
