Kenneth Helmer. Without his continued cooperation and helpful ad- vice, our many activities, including this annual, could not have been a success. During his service in this school he has accom- plishedmuch towards improving our school standards. From the entire Graduating Class--a fond farewell, Mr. Hehner, may your future years be equally suc- cessful. fecuLiy . . f FITpfii- . FERN MILLER Engli sh Social Studies l i brar i an β’ .. ' The Wheels That Kept Us Rolling ' DIARY It was a proud and happy group of green horns that Septem- ber morning when 48 students officially became highschoolers at last. Whenwe finally all became acquainted with each other, we elected Hugh Reynolds, president; Tommy Tompkins, vice president; Retha Fischer, secretary; Barbara Klinger, treas- urer. We were glad to have Mr. Robert Miller as our sponsor. During the year we had two parties. Margaret Parr of Angola became a member of our class, Whenwe were Sophomores we again were fortunate to have Mr. Miller as our sponsor. This year there were only 42 of us as we lost Maxine and Irene Barker, John Clevenger, Barbara Klinger, Doris Marti, Carolyn and Phyllis King, Russell Frey, and gained DorthaRimmel. Floyd Butler was elected president, ably assisted by Forrest Parks, vice president; Dortha Rim- mel, secretary; and Ruth Uhl, treasurer. Representatives showed us rings and sweaters. We decided on Stardust rings and black sweaters with gold letters which were also to be our class colors. We had a party each semester; the last one in- cluded seeing the show, The Jolson Story , at Kendallville. In our Junior year, 40 students, eager to build their char- acter, again returned. We regretfully lost Mr. Miller as our sponsor, butgainedMrs.Sisson. This year we lost Helen Con- rad and Agnes Herron, but gained Betty Horstman, Bob Crace, Sam Shank, and Katy Harter. Tommy Tompkins was elected president; Allen Owen, vice president; Doris Castator, sec- retary; and Ruth Uhl, treasurer. We chose as our flower the pink carnation and as our motto, We Build for Character, Not for Fame. As our money-making projects we sold magazines, had concessions at ball games, sold greeting cards (we set an all high record with $1053 worth sold), and onMarch 31 and April 1 presenteda very successful play, Prize Pigs. During the year we staged two very delightful parties, the one in the form of a dinner at the school house and the other as a wiener roast at the town park. Alas! Forty-one seniors returned in September, 1949, vi ' ith Mrs. Sisson and Mr. Helmer as our guides. Among our group we missed the faces of Rita Koenig and Tommy Tompkins. For our class executives we selected Allen Owen, presi- dent; Floyd Butler, vice president; Ann Pepple, secretary; and Doris Castator, treasurer. Under the direction of Mrs. Sisson we presented the play, Don ' t Darken My Door, October 20 and 21. On October 25 we journeyed to the Fort- meyer Studio in Fort Wayne to have our pictures taken; on December 15 we received our photographs. The local P.T.A. honored us with a supper party April 18. This event along with two class parties completed our social activities for the year. During the second week of May we traveled on the B. and O. Columbian to Washington, D.C. where we spent three very full and delightful days. This event proved both educational and recreational. At last the two long awaited days approached--Baccalaureate Service May 14 and Commencement May 17--when forty-one seniors proudly donned their caps and gowns and marched sedately up the aisle to receive their diplomas. CLASS PROPHECY Come with me on my magic carpet and we will take a ride into the future. Where do you want to stop? How about I960? Why, here we are already. 1 think we can find all our classmates, if we look long enough. Well, look here, Allen Owen, who got his start in politics as class president is now president of the United States. He doesn ' t look so healthy, though, so may- be vice-president Floyd Butler will soon succeed him in office. Also in the news is Senator Ann Pepple, chairman of the committee investigating un-American Activities. Donna Pfafman and Retha Fischer are her secretaries, and she says they ' re very efficient, too. Don Ley and Bob Walt have been promoted from designing posters to designing thousand dollar bills for the government. Also in 15 Washington is Mary Foster, president of the Club for Maiden Ladies in Amer- ica, Marrilee Debes, Emma Huff, and Margaret Parr are very active mem- bers, but Margaret has found a man and thinks she ' ll resign. Patty Jackson with her clarinet and Ruthie Uhlwith her sax are playing with Phil Spitalny ' s all-girl orchestra. La- on Rhodes was pianist for the orches- tra last year, but now she ' s with the New York Philharmonic. Doris Castator married one of the top men on Wall Street and has one lovely red-headed daughter. Maxine Householder and Paul- ine Weimer, both happily married, are living side by side on Contentment Ave - nue. Across the street live George Idd- ings and the former Marjorie Freeman. They seem to be well-satisfied, too. Look on the west corner of Success and Vine Streets. I think the sign says Wolf ' s Super Market. At last Paul is a success, and Dortha Rimmel is his no. 1 clerk. There goes Skeeter Grocock into the store now. My goodness! His beard has grown until it ' s almost to his knees. Johnny Gadomski inherited sev- eral swank appartment houses in Cleve- land from his wealthy aunt. He lives in luxury with a whole staff of servants, in- cluding Lee Ott, his butler, and Gale Schaefer, his chauffeur. Hugh Reynolds is roadmanager of Ringling Bros, circus. We see him every summer. Lillian Juengel has finally settled down and is living in a cute little apart- ment in the big city of Akron. Martha Freeman lives in a bungalow by a lake shore. Bob Grace is still running wild. I can ' t quite see whether a woman is after him or not. Lois Baney owns a big ranch in Texas. She has a stable full of beautiful riding horses. Carl Christensen is a Commander in the U.S. Air Force. He certainly looks handsonne in that un- iform ! Betty Horstman is the proprietor of an exclusive dress shop in Chicago. The best dressed women in the mid-west all buy their clothes from her. Ronald and Donald have made quite a name for them- selves. The law firm of Offord and Offord is one of the most respected in New York City. Janis Whan and Ruth Iddings are their secretaries. Sam Shank finally got married, but Forrest Parks, Bud Pfafman, and Jack Traxler think that the single life is the best life. Charley Bowers went out to Texas a few years ago and struck oil. He wears so many big diamonds that Pres- ident Owen is thinking about hanging him from the ceiling of the White House for a chandelier. 16 MHULey.. 9k BOyS SOfTBOLL John Gadomski 13, β’ 13. At -game pep sessions and at the mes themselves our active, en- siastic cheerleaders of this year ve leaped and shouted in their ef- rts to let the Panthers know that the tudent body is solidly behind them. cted at the beginning of the season, Vera Knach and Wretha Stice have rked hard to build school spirit to new high. Not knowing the worries that were to trouble her, she accepted the appointment. The rest of the staff was soon chosen. Despite the work done by the editor, Ann Pepple, it would have been impossible to have published this book without the combined efforts of the other members of the staff. Aiding her were Wretha Stice, assistant editor; Janis Whan, activities ed- itor; Lavon Rhodes and Retha Fischer, typists; Mary Foster, alumni editor ; Doris Castator, circulation manager; Bob Walt and Carl Christensen, pho- tographers; Hugh Reynolds, art editor. Not to be forgotten is the invaluable asssistance given by Paul Schilling, advisor, and Mrs. Sisson, proof reader. Allen Owen, business manager, did an excellent job of securing suffi- cient funds through the selling of advertising space. He was ably assisted by Floyd Butler , who was in charge of advertisement, Carl Christensen, Forrest Parks, and Paul Wolf. As you leaf through the pages of this book, we, the Staff, hope that you find it to be enjoyable and interesting and trust that again and again you will reread its pages. 27 SOflPSHOTS... PflOTHffi PflUSt STflff A quick look at any monthly issue of the PANTHER PAUSE does not re- veal all the tinne and effort that is demanded to put out the paper. The staff has attempted to give a complete coverage of all the activities and the organizations at school, as well as keep the school spirit and nnorale on a higher level. The members on the first semester staff who have labored to earn this worthwhile experience are Doris Castator, editor; Lavon Rhodes, production manager ; Bob Walt, sports and art editor ; Don Ley, mimeograph and circulation; Lois Baney, copy and proofreader; Donna Pfafman, Merrilee Debes, and Paul- ine Weimer, typists; Mrs. Greenawalt, advisor. Equal credit goes to the second semester staff consisting of Allen Owen, editor; Maxine Housholder, assistant editor ; Carl Christensen, feature editor ; Janis Whan and Martha Freeman, news editors; Hugh Reynolds and Paul Wolf, reporters; Do n Offord, Ronald Offord, and Charles Bowers, circultaion and production; John Gadonnski and Retha Fischer, stencil typists. 29 30 For their dramatic production during their Junior YEAR, THE CLASS CHOSE THE PLAY, PrIZE P I Gs , A THREE- ACT FARCE-COMEDY, WHICH WAS VERY ABLY PRESENTED TO A NEAR CAPACITY AUDIENCE ON THE NIGHTS OF MARCH 3 ' ND April I , 191+9. To BETTER RECALL THE PLOT PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING RESUME : Hamilton Conley yearns to be a movie star. With that end in view he journeys to hollywood and walks back, broke and discouraged, but determined to help his family by managing his mother ' s meat market. upon arriving at home, hamilton is met with the startling news that the meat market has failed and that his mother and sister are poverty-stricken. simultaneous WITH Hamilton ' s homecoming, a ray of hope enters the Conley abode when a letter arrives from wealthy Aunt Deborah who writes that she is sending her dearest possession to them. Hamilton ' s entire outlook on life is changed. He RUSHES out to BUY THE MOST EXPENSIVE AUTOMOBILE THAT CAN BE PROCURED. WHILE HE IS GONE, AMBROSE WAKELY, A PRACTICAL JOKER, PLANS TO HAVE A LITTLE HARMLESS FUN AT Hamilton ' s expense. Just as he is devising the WAYS AND MEANS OF KIDDING HAMILTON, OP I E JOHNSON, A YOUNG COLORED GIRL, ARRIVES ON THE SCENE. SHE, TOO, HAS BEEN TO HOLLYWOOD TO MAKE A CAREER IN THE MOVIES WITHOUT SUCCESS. WEARY AND HUNGRY, SHE BEGS AMBROSE FOR A JOB AND HE CONCEIVES THE IDEA OF PAWNING HER OFF TO THE Conley Family as the treasure that Aunt Deborah has sent. Mrs. Conley waxes i ndi gnant when she learns that she has still another mouth to FEED AND nothing with WHICH TO FEED IT. BuT HER TROUBLES ARE JUST STARTING. FOR NO SOONER IS OPIE ESTABLISHED IN THE POVERTY-STRICKEN HOME THAN ANOTHER CATASTROPHE ARRIVES IN THE FORM OF THREE LIVE PIGS, ANOTHER SYMBOL OF Aunt Deborah ' s generosity. The entire plot is treated in a farcial manner that results in a veritable mine of laughs ' . Through the advent of the pigs, fame and fortune smile on hamilton but not until he has been put through the most lament- able experiences that ever befell a modern hero. The FFA, consisting of farm boys, was organized in the agriculture room of the Avilla High School, for the year 1 949-50. The officer s that were elected are as follows: Pres- ident, Floyd Butler. Vice President, Forrest Parks Sec- retary, Hugh Reynolds. Treasurer, Byron Pfafman. Report- er, Donald Gienger and Sentinel, Tommy Whonsettler. The chapter has a total of 39 members. You must be an enrolled student in vocational agricul- ture and carry at least a project, to qualify to be a member. The main idea of the chapter is to teach young fellows the future of farnning and to teach the boys how t o get along with other people in their later life. The chief aim of the chanter is to raise money for the chapter treasury. This was ac- complishedby selling schedule pencils and garden seeds. The chapter entered quite a few judging contests, of whichthey won the Dairy Judging Contest at the International Dairy Exposition. For this they received a very fine trophy given by the Vonnegut Hardware Co. of Indianapolis. The team consisted of Floyd Butler, Allen Owen, Carl Christen- sen, and Richard Bender as Alternate. Allen Owen won the trophy for individual champion diary judge of the contest. They had a livestock team that won the Beef judging at Pur- due and the sheep judging at the State Fair. This team con- sisted of Gale Schaefer, Byron Pfafman,- George Iddings, and Wayne Diehm. 33 joDGifiG Tfems . . . .
