Some of us were really green, as all freshmen are supposed to be. Scared, just plain scared, was what most of us were. Maybe you think it wouldn ' t be confusing to get into the wrong room; really, it was very embarrassing. After we became somewhat acquainted, we had a class meeting to elect officers. They were president, Chloe Peters; vice- president. Max Sneary; secretary-and-treasurer, Betty Grocock. Our sponsors were Mrs. Hittinger and Miss Miller. We had a class party at the school house and played the usual green games. We didn ' t do so badly in basket ball, because Dick Bender, Irvin Croy, Norm Simon, Bernard Rhodes, Max Robart, Max Sneary, Fred Ritter, Bernard Haines, and Kenny Douglas were all on the second team. Before our freshman year ended, we had fifty-one members in our class. Then our sophomore year c ame with forty-seven members. We became more acquainted that year, but still were somewhat bashful, that is most of us. There are always a few that aren ' t. We lost Sue Stephen- son, Nils Hoffien, Alwin Hughes in the mad rush. It was a pretty busy year, for us kids anyway. Miss Miller was our sponsor again and we elected Max Ro- bart, president; Irvin Croy, vice-president; Sally Schau- weker, secretary; and Chloe Peters, treasurer. Having had a party at the school house that year, we saw the Jolson Story in Ft. Wayne. We ordered our class rings that year. Our boys were getting better all the time, because this year Irvin Croy and Max Robart were on the varsity team, sity team. Our junior year, was bigger yet. We were even more acquainted with each other. Miss Miller was standing by again as our sponsor. Our officers were president. Rich Bender; vice-president, Max Sneary; secretary. Max Robart; and treasurer, Ray Bell. Our class rings came on the 9th of September. In Novem- ber the rooms were aglow with bright yellow sweaters. We chose our class flower to be a yellow carnation. To make money, our class sold head scarves, beanies, candy, Christmas cards, and magazines. October 16th and i7th we gave our junior play, Twixteen , which caused many favorable comments. For one of our parties we sponsored a dance, and for our other party we entertained the seniors. We must have been building our ladder too fast, because we lost some more members of our class. They were Doris Balliet, Bob Debes, Beverly Froelich, Pat Knuth. However, we added Kenny Douglas, ImoGene Delong and Williard Leitch. The boys on the first team were Norm Simon, Fred Ritter, Rich Bender, Max Sneary, Irvin Croy and Max Robart. At last we were seniors! Every one was a friend of every one else, (except when we had scraps). Miss Miller (we don ' t know what we would have done with- out her) was again our sponsor along with Mr. Helmer. Our Class officers were Max Sneary, president; Con- nie DePew, vice-president; Ray Bell, secretary; and Joan Marti, treasurer. We chose our motto which was We build the ladder by which we climb. Hav- ing ordered our name cards, we received them soon after. Journeying to Ft. Wayne by bus, we had our senior pictures taken at Robert ' s Studio October 29, and received them December 15. Our senior play, Just Ducky , was presented to a pleased audience 15th and 16th of October. The first party of this year was held at the home of Bernard Haines. We had more fun! During the last semester we ordered our commencement announcements. Among the spring festivities the PTA had a supper to honor the seniors April 5. Some of the kids who before the senior year left our class and thereby missed the fun were Ester Baney, Velma Weimer, Williard Leitch, Bob Schlotter, and Imogene DeLong. The boys were really good this year. Irvin Croy, Max Robart, Fred Ritter, Max Sneary and Frank Knach were all on the first team. In the early morning of May 7th the Class of ' 49 started for Washington, D.C., where we had a gay time of sight-seeing in the capital city; but we were still glad to get home because diplomas were awaiting us. The big day approached, for Baccalaureate came on the 15th of May. On the 16th, we had final exams. Torture! At last! Forty-one seniors of Avilla High School marched out in their pretty blue caps and gowns May 18th, to receive their diplomas which were important rungs in their ladder to make it strong for the future. 17 ( ia66 l Uiii CLASS OF FORTY NINE ' S LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred Forty-nine, of Avilla High school, Noble County, Indiana, being of sound health and whole mind and all our wits about us, do hereby will and bequeth, these, our only worldly pos- sessions, to those students who shall follow in our lead. (I5unci Numbered among the band ' s activities for the year were a joint spring festival in conjunction with the high school choruses and participation in the all-county music festival. The band also played for all home basketball games, and its entertainment in this respect was appreciated by everyone. This has been a growing year for the band. Augmented by graduates of the new junior band, it grew from a beginning of sixteen members to thirty- three members. Not only has the band grown in size, but the members have worked hard all year toward a goal of near perfection in concert and march- ing technique. The prospects for next year look increasingly good. 34 wirlerd Valuable assets to the band this year were two very capable twirlers, Marilyn Hip- penhammer and Esther Winebrenner. The twin-like performance at the half time of the basketball games was the high light of the evening. The difficult and original routines were ample proff of their ability. Marilyn and Esther eainnerd The F.F.A. an organization, of farm boys, was organized in the Avilla Vo- cational Agriculture Department for the year 1948-1949 with the following officers: President, Raymond Bell; vice-president, Floyd Butler; Secretary, Ivan Potter; Treasurer, Wayne Diehm; Reporter Byron Pfafman; Sentinel, George Diehm: To belong to the Chapter one must be a vocational agriculture member and have a project. The Chapter features co-operative activities to raise money for the Chapter treasury. The boys sold pencils, magazine subscriptions, and garden seeds. The Chapter had a pest contest with the Albion Agriculture De- partment, and entered a farm Safety Confest. The Chapter also has its time for entertainment; the boys played the men teachers on the faculty in a basketball game. In addition, the Chapter had a basketball schedule for the year. The Chapter is sending two delegates to the State F.F.A. Convention in April, and these farm boys are doing many more worthwhile things for the Chapter and themselves. BOTTOM ROW: K. The responsibility of picking two squads was lifted from Coach Stryckers shoulders with the signing of Arlo Schilling, assistant coach, who picked the second team. The Panthers were unable to get going at the first of the season, losing some heartbreakers to Fremont, Kendallville, and Waterloo. Later in the sea- son they pulled out of the slump, and up to the time of writing had won 9 and lost 8. In corner conference competition the Panthers won 4 and lost 2 but came out at the end of the season with the victory bell in their possession. They also roared through the first two games of the county tourney, turning back Wa- waka and Albion. In the final game with Ligonier, they lost a double overtime contest with a score of 42-41. What the sectional holds for the boys cannot be determined but they ' ll be in there fighting all the way. AAAX SNEARY FLOYD BUTLER FRANK KNACH F ■M Much credit for the enthusiasm at all the games goes to our yell leaders, Wretha Stice, Hugh Reynolds, and LaVera Knach.
