REMINISCING Four short but happy years ago a group of fifty-one, shy, excited freshmen entered Avilla High School. Embarking upon this new career, we chose as sponsor, Mr. Piper; president, Claude Kennel; vice-president, Martha Kemerly; and secretary-treasurer, Roberta Wineland. Affairs sailed along smoothly until we freshmen began to hear whispered comments on the initiation. This much-anticipated event was getting too close for comfort. On October 19, the day of reckoning, we insignificant freshies were humiliated to the extent of having to push peanuts with our noses the extent of the gym floor. Plus that, we were fed castor oil and had our faces dipped in water and flour. These are only a few of the many trials forced upon us, and which could only be the off- spring of the minds of upperclassmen. Our final reward (we did have a reward) was green popsicles and green popcorn balls. Later in the year a Christmas party and exchange was held in the gym and a weiner roast was held in the woods. We moved on to our sophomore year with a loss of seven pupils, and elected Mr. Eyer, sponsor; Herman Davis, president; Jack Febles, vice-president; Doris Stephenson, secre- tary; and Cletus Ray, treasurer. A Hallowe’en party was he'd with the freshmen in the high school gym. Another highlight of the year was the ordering of our class rings. Moving on toward our indefinite goal as juniors, we found our class diminished to torty-five. Under the guidance of Mr. He!mer as sponsor; Stanley Pepple as president; Warren Blackman, vice-president; Martha Kemerly, secretary; and Herman Davis, treasurer, we endeavored to make this year more outstanding than the last. With full cooperation, we produced “People Are Funny” which turned out a huge success. Even more successful was the Junior-Senior Banquet which was carried out in the theme of Robin Hood. The banquet was held at the Chamber of Commerce Building in Fort Wayne. Later the entire group attended a theatre party at the Emboyd, featuring “Re- becca.” During the year we juniors sponsored a roller-skating party and also held a weiner roast which preceeded our decorating the gym for the senior Commencement. The fall of 1940 found thirty-nine members of our original group still with us, all eagerly looking forward to that final day marked “Graduation.” Our officers for the year included Mr. Helmer, sponsor; Stanley Pepple, president; Warren Blackman, vice- president; Patricia Knauer, secretary; and Roberta Wineland, treasurer. To distinguish ourselves, we selected cardinal sweaters with white letters. Our choice for class flower was the American Beauty rose and by popular selection our motto is: “Aim high, and hold your aim.” October 30th found the group at the Cron Studios in Fort Wayne, each individual looking his best. The results of this trip arrived in December. Early in January our name cards arrived and for a few days we seniors were swamped with name- card seekers. On January 3rd, the annual staff, headed by Martha Kemerly and Stanley Pepple, was announced. Immediately the staff set down to work out a unique yearbook. During the “annual sales campaign week,” January 27 to 31, all previous records were broken. In February, after a heated controversy, we remaining thirty-seven seniors or- dered our Commencement announcements, The “Apron String Revolt” was chosen as the class play, and after much deliberation over tryouts, the cast was chosen, The play was presented before large audiences on April 3rd and 4th and was termed a grand success. During the last month of our high school career, we seniors were privileged to participate in many activities. On April 17th, Senior Day was held, and on April 19th the juniors honored us with a banquet. On April 20th, we attended Baccalaureate and on April 23rd we took the day off for our senior trip. Finally, the culmination of all our scholastic efforts came on April 28th, the date of Commencement. Excited and a little subdued for the moment, we received our long-awaited diplomas. Looking back over the years of our scholastic endeavors and achievements, we can realize that every effort we put forth was worth the reward. We bid farewell to A. H. Se but the unforgetable memories it has given us we shall keep forever. After two years of comparative insignifigance we now find ourselves very busy juniors. In the spring of our sophomore year we again chose Mr. Forney as our sponsor for our junior year. At our first meeting Walter Schauweker was elected president, Merle Pepple, vice president; Loella Grawcock, secretary, and John Clark, treasurer. The first class activity was the junior play which was held soon after school started. The receipts from this play will be used to finance the Junior-Senior Banquet in the spring. In November a skating party was sponsored by the junior class for the whole high school and in February a class party was held in the gymnasium. The junior class has been well represented in the field of athletics by John Clark, Merle Pepple, Richard Frey, Warren Harding, Walter Schauweker, Donald Newman, Allen Anderson, and Richard Shafer in basketball; also John Clark, Merle Pepple, Allen Anderson, and Walter Schauweker were on the high school softball team. On September 16, forty-four timid freshmen entered the door of Avilla High School for their milestone. As our fore-runners, we chose Miss Harrison as our sponsor; James Leach, president; Donald Rhodes, vice president; Ralph Housholder, secretary-treasurer. Although we tried to be happy, our happiness was marred by the Freshman Initiation of Friday, October 18. We were required to put our clothing on backwards and have our hair decorated with binder-twine. Then, after rolling a peanut across the gym floor with our noses, we were taken out to scrub the front sidewalks with tooth- brushes. After this, we were rewarded with ice cream, pop, candy, and crackers. Other parties were held during the year. During the year we lost Arcille Lung and Irene Owen and gained Robert Helmkamp. Thus ends our first mile- stone of school life leaving memories behind which will never be forgotten. Sixth Row: Donna DeHoft, Joe Mueller, Berniece Butler, Vaughn Kostielney. Page 24 CALENDAR Listen, my public, and you shall hear Of Avilla High 1940 and 41 year. Now gather around and give your attention A few high points we would like to mention. SEPTEMBER We started to school in early fall; Our first activity was playing softball. Ligonier beat us our very first game; We struck back at Wolf Lake with quite a gain. The class officers were elected for the coming year; Mr. Helmer was chosen by the seniors dear. OCTOBER The P. T. A. organized anew; Wawaka and Cromwell in ball we beat, too. The Band Supper was a success and showed a gain. To Albion we lost our last softball game. The Freshmen Initiation did the pupils up right, When they were done they sure were a sight. The junior play turned out for the best, Our few days’ vacation gave us a rest. NOVEMBER We beat Salem Center for our first basketball game, Though we lost to Wolf Lake, it wasn’t with shame. To North Manchester the band took a trip; The Armistice Day program we didn’t let slip. The Albion and Leo games deserved celebration, Then came the long looked for Thanksgiving vacation. On the twenty-first, Miss Mary was wed, From the first grade pupils, tears were shed. Wolcottville defeated us for our second loss. We beat Huntertown by merely a toss. DECEMBER The senior pictures brought much chat; What did we do to deserve faces like that? We beat, but not easily, the Ashley game; Ligonier and Cromwell followed; results, the same; The Holiday Spirit was felt everywhere; The cry of “vacation” soon filled the air. JANUARY We ended our gala Christmas vacation With a great big New Year’s celebration. All basketball fans to Rome City went, To our second team the trophy was sent. The semester ended on the tenth this year With stiff exams from our teachers dear. FEBRUARY Victory over Angola, to us was a treat To end up the season, Garrett we beat. Our team prepared for the basketball tourney; All fans to K’ville made their journey. The Panthers were victors in the sectional meet; But at Fort Wayne, they met with defeat. MARCH The juniors did the class tourney up grand, Down at Manchester we were proud of our band. The F. F. A. skating party brought each one his fall; But amusement and fun were provided for all. The seniors worked extra hard each day To learn each part of the senior play. APRIL The play was given two nights in a row; The Spring Concert, was also a success, you know. With much hurrying and scurrying the annual went to press. The juniors gave a banquet that topped all the rest. We then took a trip and had “Senior Day.” At Baccalaureate they showed us “‘Life’s Way.” Commencement arrived with both joy and tears; We accepted our diplomas, the reward of four years. And now, we bid you all adieu; May these happy school memories remain with you. This year again the band has added an attrac- tion for the basketball fans by marching and making letter formations at the home games. Probably the biggest, best and most im- portant event of the year was the Chicken Sup- per, sponsored by the band and held on October 8 at the Avilla High School gym. There were around 600 people served that night, and the proceeds along with other paid programs made it possible for us to have attractive new blue and white uniforms of which we are very proud. The band members wish to thank the school, | parents, local merchants, Lions Club and all those who have helped in any way to make the band more progressive than it has been in the past. The Avilla Squad had a fairly suc- cessful season with 3 wins and 2 losses. With a year’s experience, it is ex- pected that the Avilla High School softball club will make a formidable showing in 1941. Stanley Pepple, Harvey Preston and Gerald Sayles, seniors on the squad, will be greatly missed next year. Of the forty-one boys that reported, twenty-five carried the Avilla High Panthers through the most success- ful season the school has ever had. The Panthers won a total of twenty games while dropping only five for a very good record. During the season the Panthers were runner’s up in the county tournament and won the State Corner Conference Championship. They downed Albion, Waterloo, Ashley, LaGrange, Angola and Garrett making six wins against no defeats to bring to Avilla their second conference crown. The defeat handed Garrett was the first time the Panthers have bested the Railroaders. The small but mighty Panthers entered the sectional tourney with little chance to win, but bowled over Brighton, Ligonier, the tough Wol- cottville Bulldogs in the semi-finals and the red- hot LaGrange Lions in the finals to give A. H. S. her first sectional crown. Avilla dropped its first game of the regional tourney to Pierceton in an overtime tilt. Toa much height on the part of the Pierceton Cubs caused the Panthers’ downfall. Three senior boys will not be on the squad next year; namely, Stanley Pepple, Jud Sayles and Gene Cogan. Stan and Jud, both regulars, will be greatly missed; Stan for his scoring punch and Jud for his guarding ability as well as his scoring. Left Row: John C’ark, Harold Pepple, Merle Pepple, Vaughn Kostielney, Gene Cogan, Allen Anderson. Right Row: Stanley Pepple, Walter Schauweker, Keith Sheets, Gerald Sayles, Tom Knauer, Richard Frey. Although the reserves were small, they had the punch to come through. In the Noble County Tournament, the Cubs downed Albion, Cromwell and Wolf Lake in succession to annex the championship. This is the second time in the school history that the re- serves have brought home the trophy. With such boys as Kostielney, H. Frey, M. Newman, Beltz, Knauer, H. Pepple and Leach getting much valuable experience on the reserve squad this year, it is expected to see these boys make a strong bid for the 1941 varsity squad. There are three Home Economics classes with an enrollment of forty-nine students. Miss Harrison is the Home Economics teacher. The third year Home Economics Class redecorated the dining room during the first semester. They made a slip cover for the davenport, draperies for the windows, refinished the table, chairs, and the woodwork. In October the third year class took a field trip to Wolf and Dessauer’s to see a demonstration on “How To Make Slip Covers.” In January, the three Home Economics classes attended a style show at Wolf and Dess- auer’s. Miss Harrison also has charge of an Adult Study Class. This class meets every two weeks on Monday evening. There are about twenty-five members in this class. For the first time, a boys’ Home Economics class was organized for the second semester. There are seventeen boys in this class. AVILLA CHAPTER First Row: M. A. work in a high Ni school vocational agriculture department. | The Adult Evening School was continued this year with a large increase in at- | tendance. A course in swine management was offered. The average attendance at this | series of ten meetings was approximately 50. There were 165 different individuals who attended at some time during the course. The part-time group of young men was also continued this year. Dean Cramer is a member of the Noble County 4-H Livestock Judging team and Jim Miller and Philip Stout are members of the dairy judging team. A Junior Conservation Club was organized under the sponsorship of the I’. F. A. The club has about 35 members. oe HUMOR A cry rings out upon the air— Students stagger down the stair; The smoke fumes are sweeping through; What is the smell? The air turns blue; The faculty’s mad; they rave like fiends;— The Boy’s Home Ec. Class had burned the beans. A player was being carried off the football field. Norma H.: Who is that? W. Strycker: Why, he’s our best man. Norma H.: But, Wayne, this is so sudden! Mr. Eiler (explaining geometry) “Now watch the board closely, and I will run through it again.” Miss Shoup: Were you copying his paper? . Tom K.: No ma’m, I was only looking to see if he had mine right. Russel Carteaux: If an English teacher is a bookworm, what is a geometry teacher? Stanley Pepple: An angle worm. Violet Busch: Has the joke editor got my joke yet? Miss DeHoff: Not yet, but he’s. trying hard. Jack Febles: Between me and you what do you think of Raymond’s girl? Gene Cogan: Between me and you, not so much; but alone, oh boy! Once upon a time there was a man. This man had a dream. He dreamed he was eat- ing shredded wheat biscuit. When he woke up, half the mattress was gone. Warren B.: When I get to Heaven, I’m going to ask Shakespeare if he really wrote those plays. Harvey P.: Maybe he won’t be there. Warren B.: Then you ask him. Mrs. Brown: Did you leave a note for the milkman? Wilma: Yes, mother, but he didn’t answer it. Marjorie W.: I would like some powder. Druggist: Gun, face, or bug? Mr. O’Reilley recently wrote the General Music Store at Chicago and placed the fol- lowing order:—Please send me the music to “Strike the Harp in Praise of God and Paddle Your Own Canoe.” Mr. Forney: They say a bachelor is a person crossed in love. Mr. Helmer: Yes,, and a married man is one who has been double-crossed. Mr. Land: What became of that other windmill you had on your farm a while ago? Philip Stout: We took it down because there was only wind enough for one. CLASS OF 1888 Maude Hooper (Sutton)—Wolcottville, Ind. Birdie Ramston (Dolan)—Deceased. Lola Ramston (Hersh)—Avilla, Ind.
