SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY Having completed our first year, we came back in the fall of 1939 as sopho- mores with a class of forty-five wiser youngsters. This year we were guided by Mr. Forney, sponsor; Stanley Fordeck, president; Merle Pepple, vice-president; Cleo Crothers, secretary; and Beverly Riehm, treasurer. We showed our skill by being very prominent in school activities. John Clark and Richard Frey were members of the varsity basketball squad. John Clark, Chester Dove, and Richard Schaefer were members of the Avilla High School Band. Delores Wolf and Lois Troyer represented Noble County in the District Second Year Latin Contest at Fort Wayne on March thirtieth. By the fall of 1940 we hope we still have forty-five members coming back to travel on as the class of 1942. FIRST ROW; Richard Shaler, Betty Schutta, Jacqueline Spacy. THIRD ROW: Luella Gehring, Beverly Her- berger, Pauline Imler, Evelyn Jarrett, Claude Kennel, Donna Kistler. FOURTH ROW: Dor- othy Kistler, Patricia Knauer, Phyllis Linville, William Lobdell, Dorothy Myers, Harvey Preston, Cletus Ray. lUNlOR CLASS HISTORY Under the wise leadership of Mr. Helmer and the cooperation of the class officers: Stanley Pepple, president; War- ren Blackman, vice-president; Martha Kemerly, secretary; Herman Davis, treas- urer; the juniors have greatly added to the success of the Avilla High School. Remarkable accomplishments have been made in music, dramatics, athletics, and debate. The athletic talents are held by Stanley Pepple, Gerald Sayles, and Eugene Cogan. Some of those musically inclined are Beverly Herberger, Patricia Knauer, Paulme Imler, Luella Gehring, Annabelle Schlupp, Phyllis Linville, War- ren Sheets, Jack Febles, Argle Christlieb, and Warren Blackman. The debate honors go to Luella Gehr- ing, Martha Kemerly, Doris Stephenson, and Warren Blackman. The entire junior class contributed to the highly successful People Are Fun- ny , and the even more successful Junior- Senior Banquet. FIRST ROW: Fern Rhodes, Gertrude Ry- nearson, Gerald Sayles. SECOND ROW: Vern Christlieb, Dale Fischer, Hazel Fisher, Robert Frost, Beverly House- holder. THIRD ROW: Wanita Huff, Bill Jarrett, Rose-- anna Keck, June Kell- er, Tom Knauer, Ellen Kreienbrink, Archie Kugler. FOURTH ROW: Doro- thy Landgraff, Donald Leitch, John Lobdell, Alice Lung, Junior Mark- er, Eleanor Marti. FIFTH ROW: Jean Martin, Eileen McClish, Carl Meyer, Iris Myers, Thelma Meyer, Max Newman, Keith Owen. With a happy smile, but somewhat timid, fifty freshmen entered the door of the Avilla High School for their first mile- stone. As our headlmers we chose Miss Harrison, sponsor; Keith Sheets, presi- dent; Harold Pepple, vice-president; Thomas Knauer, secretary-treasurer. We tried to seem happy and do our best, but we knew the Freshman Initia- tion would soon come; and it did come on Friday, October 13. We were required to give a two-minute talk before the assembly. After games were played, we were rewarded with ice cream, candy, and cookies. Several other parties were held during the year. During the year we lost Bessie Cooley, who now goes to Kendallville. Thus ends the first milestone of our school life, leav- ing memories that will never be forgotten. FIRST ROW: Harold Pepple, Robert Renken- berger, Margaret Rice, Velma Rollins.
