That ' s the Freshman Class of 1936 and ' 37; shy, timid-looking creatures, aren ' t they? Yes, we twenty-one little bashful freshies thus enter into the activities at good old A. H. S. Although a little backward, we soon over- come this and are going strong with our class sponsor, Mrs. Brown, at our head, Clifford Parks, president; J. C. Fisher, vice- president; and Idress Hoot, secretary-treas- urer. Of course, we could not let October pass without a Hallowe ' en party, and what a party! And now comes that most dreaded but yet much looked forward to event, the Freshman Initiation. My goodness! It really isn ' t so bad. Pie eatmg, pillow fights, box racing, peanut pushing and last of all, the grand reward, ice cream and candy. Look, who ' s here! The Sophomore Class of 1937 and ' 38, back for more! Must be last year didn ' t freeze them out. This year we have several new ones from LaOtto and elsewhere. We choose Miss Justice as our sponsor; Clifford Parks, president; Dolores Stonestreet, vice president; and J. C. Fisher, secretary-treasurer. We couldn ' t let October with its witches and goblins pass without a party. Of course, everyone comes masked and Clarence Bitzer walks off with first prize. We hold a Christmas party and exchange in December. We skip from De- cember up to April and here we are at Parks ' having a grand old out-door weiner roast. Gosh, what a night! Some of us think that we may have to park here at Parks ' all night, but we finally do get ' home. Not to be out-done by the students of previous years, we order our junior rings. ( ' What size, please? ) Thus, we come to the end of another grand old year. Back again and raring to g o! This year we boast the all-important number of twen- ty-seven. Under the leadership of our sponsor. Miss Sawyer, our president, Glenn Riehm, our vice-president, J. C. Fisher and our secretary-treasurer, Mary Jane Crothers, it looks like a very promising year. Follow- ing weeks of practice, we finally present our junior play, Aunt Susie Shoots the Works, which goes off with a bang. December again with its round of gayety and fun. And now we commence planning for probably the greatest event in our school life, the Junior-Senior Banquet. We carry out our theme, a Dutch garden, almost to perfection. It is the evening of the banquet and every- one, arrayed in his best bib and tucker, is having a lovely time. As we enter the cars, which will take us to the Paramount Theater, we notice that it ' s raining, but who cares? The evening is over and a wonder- ful time is had by all. As this, another school year, draws to a close, we look ahead and wonder what the next year with all its wonderful promises will bring. Three down and one to go! Here we are, twenty-four hale and hearty seniors back once more to enter joyfully into the activities at A. H. S. Election time again; we choose our officers as follows: Miss Parsons, sponsor; Clifford Parks, president; Lois Huelsenbeck, vice-president; J. C. Fish- er, secretary; and Mary Jane Crothers, treasurer. We decide on sweaters of ma- roon and gold since these are our class colors. Our class flower is the yellow rose and our class motto: The guide of life is common sense. Here it is October thirty- first, and we twenty-four excited seniors, looking our very best, are getting our pic- tures taken at the Cron Studios. As soon as our pictures are taken we will attend the Palace Theater. It is now November and we are having a weiner roast on the ball diamond across from the schoolhouse. Our name cards arrive early in December. We seniors put on a short skit entitled Santa Claus , and sing a song of our own origina- tion for the Christmas program. We start the New Year with an added member to our small group; we are now twenty-five. The cast for our senior play, Everybody ' s Crazy Now, is chosen, and the date of its pre- sentation is March twenty-eight and twen- ty-nine. March passes all too quickly and the play is over. It is a decided success. And now comes April, the greatest month of all to us seniors, the winding-up, as you might say, of our school life at A. H. S. A whirlwind of events follows: Baccalaureate, our trip to Ft. Wayne, Junior-Senior Ban- quet, last and by far the most important, Commencement. Having received our di- plomas we thus depart from A. H. S. We go, but the good times we had and the learning we absorbed shall live in our memories forever. So long, A. H. S.!! It was fun while it lasted. CLASS PROPHECY OF 1940 In their luxurious and modernistic apartment in Manhattan, Kathleen ' Walt, internationally famous dress designer, and Lucille Wolf, star of Oh Johnny , latest hit show on Broadway, are awaiting the arrival of their guests, the Class of 1940. Shall we listen in? Well, look who ' s here! — J. C. Fisher, eminent horticulturist, and with him is his wife, Lois Huelsenbeck, who served as his secretary for many years. — And that famous pianist, Ruth Whonsetler, who plays in the all-girl orchestra conducted by Dolores Stonestreet, just came in. Ruth and Dolores have just finished a successful tour of the United States and plan to appear soon at the Rainbow Room here in New York. — Hurry, and open the door, Lucille; I believe I just saw Daphne Harrod and Leona Weller get out of a taxi in front of the building. Hello, Daphne, aren ' t you the president of Vassar College? Leona wrote me that you were when she sent me a copy of her latest book of the year, The Phantom Strikes . — And here are the newly-weds, Mr. and Mrs. James Meyer. Why, didn ' t you know Idress Hoot was the yell-leader there at Dartmouth College until she met its Latin professor? — Excitement galore whenever those two eligible bachelors, Mike Walt, president of Trans- continental Western Airlines, and Glenn Riehm, his technical adviser, walk in with Mary Jane Crothers, better known to movie goers as Bette GlaMour, the queen of the cinema world. — And the engineer that is building a bridge from New York City to Long Island took time off to come to our party. Re- member him? Raymond Sylvester, and he brought along his fiancee, Rosellen Fischer, who was a former Follies girl. Shh — this is secret, but they plan to be married when Raymond finishes this job. — Girls, get your hair ready for here is Betty Schaefer who is coiffure stylist at Antoine ' s Beauty Salon. — Why, Marilyn Southern, when did you return to New York? I thought you were still painting abroad! Do you plan to open your studio in Greenwich Village soon? — Excuse me, but whose cute little dogs are these? Oh! They belong to Mr. and Mrs. James Ross and their performing dog troupe. Wasn ' t she Kate Huff? — Kate Rice is around somewhere. She left Panama to be here at the party. She helps her husband in his missionary work down there. — Vera Teders, where did you get that diamond? From a neighbor! So you still like farming, or farmers? — In case anyone is taken sick we have with us Aurelia Fortman, head nurse at the Metropolitan Hospital here in New York. — If everyone is here, we shall go in to dinner. — Oh, wait! The former Maxine DeHoff, famous lecturer and world traveller, is coming with her always late husband, Louis Lash, who is still trying to fix a tie which he bought in one of his own department stores. So after going to dinner and a theater, the guests will attend one of New York ' s smart supper clubs owned by Clifford Parks, who is also president of the Society of New York Playboys. To the Class of 1940 are extended all the happiness, success, and good luck in the world. May you reach the top rung in the ladder of success where fame and fortune await each of you in THE FUTURE YEARS. Page 14 u 1) D ii i] if] t n SOPHOMORES Stanley Fordeck, president. . This year we were guided by Mr. Forney, sponsor; Stanley Fordeck, president; Merle Pepple, vice-president; Cleo Crothers, secretary; and Beverly Riehm, treasurer. We showed our skill by being very prominent in school activities. John Clark and Richard Frey were members of the varsity basketball squad. John Clark, Chester Dove, and Richard Schaefer were members of the Avilla High School Band. Delores Wolf and Lois Troyer represented Noble County in the District Second Year Latin Contest at Fort Wayne on March thirtieth. As our headlmers we chose Miss Harrison, sponsor; Keith Sheets, presi- dent; Harold Pepple, vice-president; Thomas Knauer, secretary-treasurer. We tried to seem happy and do our best, but we knew the Freshman Initia- tion would soon come; and it did come on Friday, October 13. We were required to give a two-minute talk before the assembly. After games were played, we were rewarded with ice cream, candy, and cookies. Several other parties were held during the year. During the year we lost Bessie Cooley, who now goes to Kendallville. YE OLDE PANTHER STAFF You are probably all wondering who was responsible for this Panther of 1940. You have noticed us in the halls, since we were those tired, worried, pre-occupied looking souls who were carrying piles and piles of bulky books, messy papers, and dull pencils. We were also the high-pressure salesmen for the year book of ' 40. A skit, entitled Order Your Panther Now or Future Famous Faces on File for Further Fun , written by Kathleen Walt, was put on by us to enliven the campaign to sell annuals. Although ten years were added to our lives, we are happy to present this yearbook to you; and we wish all the seniors of next year the same fun, sorrows, and wrinkled brows that we have had in putting out this, Little book of memories. Filled with sorrow and with cheer. And may it just grow grander With each succeeding year. Page 24 With a view in mind to publish the best school paper, we made many changes in the paper at the beginning of this year. A new heading was designed by Mike Walt. Folded paper and the blocked type were other changes that were made. The paper made it a policy to support and advertise all school activities — basketball games, sale of the Panther, school plays, etc. In an effort to make it an all-around school newspaper, some of our clever writers wrote human-interest and feature stories to enliven the paper. One of the members of the staff took the pen name of Elaine Auburn and wrote an entertaining feature on redheads. The joke column this year concerned amusing things that had happened to the students here in school. At the beginning of the year the class elected Maxine DeHoff editor-in- chief. Mike Walt has served as art editor and sports editor. Ruth Whonsetler became joke editor and James Ross exchange editor. Reporters were Mary Jane Crothers, Kathleen Walt, Lois Huelsenbeck, Catherine Huff, Betty Schaefer, and Dolores Stonestreet. The sponsor of the paper was Miss DeHoff. The band has been very active in the past season, appearing in the following programs: A series of twelve outdoor summer concerts in Avilla; a series of eight such concerts at Albion, Indiana; October 5, concert for the Matinee Music Club at Kendallville and participation in the parade at the Auburn Fair on the same date; November 10, Armistice Day program; November 14, concert and chicken supper; November 15, followed basketball team to Albion and played between games; January 6, mass band at Huntertown for basketball game; February 2, Huntertown band came here and formed mass band for basketball game. Aside from the programs listed the band has played for numerous other programs of a miscellaneous nature. The band added a new attraction for basketball fans this year by marching and making letter formations at all the home games, and at the last two games added four girls doing synchronized baton twirling. The proceeds from the chicken supper help to make it possible for us to buy new instruments which were needed to give us more complete in- strumentation. Four senior members received letter awards last year. These students were Evelyn Wineland, Dwight Sheets, Everitt Padgitt, and Evelyn Albertson. Graduating seniors who will receive awards this year are Daphne Harrod, Maxine DeHoff, Idress Hoot, and Louis Lash. The band members wish to thank the school, parents. Lions Club, and the local merchants who have contributed in any way toward making this last year a successful one and promise that they will do their best to make them- selves worthy of the kindness that has been shown them. CHORUS Under the capable direction of Miss Esther Parsons, the Avilla High School girls ' chorus, composed of thirty-four members, has made its contribution to the musical entertainment and education of all students and friends. In spite of the handicap of a crowded schedule often making full rehearsals difficult, these girls are constantly increasing their repertoire and improving their musicianship. Vested in uniforms of gray, trimmed with maroon, the organization has made several commendable appearances throughout the year. On November twenty-second, a Thanksgiving program was presented by the chorus together with members of the sixth grade class. The chorus has also sung at various Parent-Teacher ' s meetings. On February eighteenth, this group of girls and the Junior High School chorus presented the entire evening program composed of vocal and instrumental numbers at the Avilla Methodist church. The final appearances of this talented musical gro up were those made at Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises. It was here that the last harmonious notes of the senior members were heard. In October tryouts were held for assistant director of the chorus and Martha Beltz was chosen. She has assisted at rehearsals and has directed the chorus at various programs. Officers include: President, Daphne Harrod; vice-president, Beatrice Riehm; secretary-treasurer, Beverly Riehm; pianist, Beverly Herberger; assistant pianist, Roseanna Keck. Page 30 RESOLVED The debate season opened in November when a group oi nine started studying the question — Resolved, That The Federal Government Should Own and Operate the Railroads — pro and con. On January 13, the entire squad, composed of Beverly Herberger, Doris Stephenson, Martha Kemerly, Maxine DeHoff, Warren Blackman, Kathleen Walt, Daphne Harrod, Mike Walt, and Luella Gehring, went to the Invitational Debate Tourney at Elkhart. There the squad lost six and won six debates. They competed with the following schools: North Side, Knox, Nappanee, Col- um.bia City, Thornton of Calumet City, Gary, North Manchester, three Logans- port teams, and two from Elkhart. During February two double debates were held with North Side of Fort Wayne. At each of these debates our teams lost one and won one debate. By a system of try-outs the two varsity teams were selected to represent the school in the tournaments conducted by the Indiana State Debating League. On February 17 these two teams went to Fremont to compete with Fremont and Shipshewana in the district tournament. By winning three of their four debates the Avilla group were proclaimed the district champions, a fact which made them eligible to meet competition in the sectional tournament. The teams went to Manchester College on March 6, where they met Elkhart, the winners of their district, to determine the sectional winner. There, aft er another double debate, the judge, Professor Beauchamp, of Manchester, awarded Elkhart the honor of being the champion debate teams of section sixteen in the Indiana Debating League. This victory over Avilla enabled Elkhart to compete in the final state tournament held on April 5, 6. The Adult Evening School was continued this year with a large increase in attendance. Ninety-eight were enrolled in the course in dairy cattle management. A part time group of boys and young men was organized, and a course in farm shop was offered. These both proved to be very interesting and edu- cational. Our organization, still in its infancy, has plans for more and greater accomplishments within the next few years. Although faced with the problem of building a team around the three veterans, Fisher, Parks, and S. Pepple, Avilla has enjoyed one of its outstanding years in basketball circles. Four county championship teams learned to taste defeat at the hands of the Panthers. This year the Panthers were unfortunate in drawing the defending sec- tional champion in the second round of play. After a hectic nip and tuck battle throughout the game, the Kendallville Comets edged a 34-32 victory which spelled finis to a very successful basketball season. To the departing seniors, Fisher, Parks and Sylvester, the school wishes the best of success. BASEBALL On September 5, 1939, Coach Strycker issued the call for baseball. Of the twenty-one boys that turned out, only a few were from last year ' s varsity squad. On September 8, Albion, our first opponent, defeated us 3 to 2 in a well played game. September 12, Wolf Lake came to our diamond and was defeated in a loosely played game 14 to 3. September 14, we won a forfeit from Cromv; ' ell. September 19, we traveled to Kendallville and vi ere defeated 2 to 1 in a close and exciting game. September 22, Ligonier came to our diamond and returned home defeated 5 to 1. September 26, we played Rome City and were defeated by a power- squad 3 to 1. October 3, we journeyed to Wawaka and with much batting power de- feated them 4 to 1. This was the last game of the season, and the squad hod a record of 4 wins and3defeats. This year closed a brilliant high school pitching career for J. C. Fisher, who has been the mainstay of Avilla ' s pitching staff for the past three years. Rely- ing upon the good right arm of our departing senior, victories have far out- numbered defeats for the Panthers.
