CURTIS BISHOP President It occurs to me that perhaps too long I have emphasized, without clarifying, the deep con- viction that we should never confuse tempor- ary gains with permanent values and that nothing worthwhile ever comes unattended by difficulties. This message to the Averett College graduates of 1964 is an attempt to point out the importance of keeping these two axiomatic statements in mind and to show that they logically belong together. Averett College has failed you if it has not demonstrated to you that you have wasted two years if you think that graduation is an end within itself. We should have convinced you that your graduation is more of a proof of your readiness for the greater responsibili- ties that you must assume. You have left the ranks of the ordinary and entered the role of leadership. p Just as you may have encountered some difficulties at times in achieving the goal of graduation, you will be confronted at times by problems that appear insoluble. Those about you will feel justified in looking to you for the solutions that must be found. You have placed yourselves among those to whom society looks for leadership. It is our expecta- tion that you will give substance to George William Custis's declaration that leadership is that which, In a great crisis is thinking so as to make others think, feeling so as to make others feel, which tips the orator's tongue with fire that lights as well as burns.

Pulley Dean of Students And Registrar QDQGDS Dean Fugate advises students on educa- tional matters and assists them in choosing their programs. She has charge over all ac- ademic records of the college and prepares the class examination schedules. She studies the curricula o f f e r e d and recommends changes when needed. ' Dean Pulley counsels with the students regarding their successful adjustment to college life. She serves as coordinator of all elements of students personnel and works with the student government in making and enforcing rules and regulations. Mrs. Boyd serves as a liaison between the Dean of Students and individual students on personal matters. She also serves as the official College. Hostess.
