Since the l942 Pendulum makes its appearance in a world torn by the rigors of a universal conflict, we present this annual with the spirit tending to- wards our all-out efforts for the victory that we know will be ours. lt will be our job, as college students, to maintain progress in education during and after this war-de- termined that we constantly advance towards a more perfect society. As an institution, Averett has already made a con- tribution towards victory. We point with pride to the success of the knitting campaign, the collection of metal and cancelled stamps, the registration of fac- ulty and students for civilian defense, and the pres- ence of many alumni in the armed service and other types of defense work. These experiences and the guidance we have received here this year have helped to prepare us for our job of maintaining progress, and have caused us to appreciate more fully the innumerable bless- ings and privileges that we enjoy here in freedom's last great stronghold. We will continue to do our part to preserve and protect these privileges and our liberty. They shall not be blacked out!
