A Presenting La Neva ' 64 Time is an inevitability in man ' s life; yet it is not time alone that fashions the path of destiny. Courage, faith, perseverance, fortitude, strength, and the desire for freedom have combmed to form what is now the United States of America. Our nation represents the challenge and courage of the colonists of Massachusetts and Plymouth; the fearless leadership exempli- fied in the Continental Congress; the bitter, relentless strug- gle for democracy in the Revolutionary War; the pushing, rushing explosion of an expanding nation; the birth of a new era of trade and modernization in the Industrial Revolution; the blood of men who fought in world wars for what they believed to be a cause of humanity; the ideas, innermost . thoughts, and artistic culture of great authors, humani- | tarians, and artists; and the pushing drive of a people working for a powerful, yet peaceful, nation. Much, how- ever, remains to be accomplished, for time and infinity represent new worlds to be conquered. Man ' s horizon now stretches from the earth to the stars. With the discoveries of space, time flies by more rapidly than ever before as man strives to master the unknown. Encouraged by successful human orbits, the fabulous Telstar, and dynamic experiments to go to the moon, the United States attempts to conquer space through peaceful co-existence. It is a whole nation which must conquer a new dimension, and a nation is only as good as its citizens. As our grad- uates prepare for their tasks in Ufe in this changing world, we hope that they will always see a new, shining horizon before them that is their ultimate goal inlife-a horizon that each year will become more accessible and desirable. . ■ ' ■ ' ■-• •Oft -, , WASHINGTON, D.C. i ' XJBSMsS ' v. We Dedicate This Annual ' Zsc 7 The recipient of the La Neva ' s dedication is honored by the Seniors as being the person to whom they wish to give a great tribute. In their minds this person illustrates the integrity, sportsmanship, perseverance, respect, and friendship that they admire. This year the Senior class has chosen a teacher respected for his teaching ability and fairness, liked by both the faculty and student body for his friendly manner, and admired for his coaching ability. Besides teaching algebra, he has coached the basketball and baseball teams; he has helped students learn and athletes strive for victory with the best of their ability, thus promoting high ideals in both education and sportsmanship. Through his efforts many students have learned that constant struggling is needed to achieve quality in anything they attempt. These efforts, combmed with the example he himself is, have gained him the esteem of the entire stu- dent body. Therefore, in view of his valuable contributions of teaching and sportsmanship to Avenal High School, we are proud to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Frank Ross. MR. LUTHER WHITTEN, Principal MR. HARRY REILLY, Superintendent Space Age Demands Leadership Man is eternally motivated by tlie desire to protect the gift of life, prolong it and improve the environmental factors that play upon it. The space age, which is also known as the era of action, has emphasized improvement of en- vironmental conditions to the point that is ad- vancing society at a supersonic rate. The improvement of society at such a rapid rate has society and particularly the leaders. This rate of advancement depends directly upon the speed at which this society is able to produce capable leaders. As the demands increase, the rewards increase, both mater- ially and emotionally. May you accept the challenge to develop and perfect those qualities of integrity, responsibility, emotional stability, empathy, enthusiasm and gentility. These qualities combined with an abundance of energy and good sound judgement will enable you to become a leader and make your contribution to the rapid progress of society. This progress cannot and will not con- tinue without competent leadership. Best wishes to you in the future and may you find afresh each day the force, the inspiration and passion of leadership. This is a demanding task, but remember, problems are opportuni- ties for those strong enough to tackle them as challenges, so regardless of the vocation or profession you select; be the best. 7 ., L. toR.: Mr. House, Mr. Bradbury, Mr. Yenger, Mr. Hightower, Mr. Moore. Mr. Gilkey, Vice-Principal; Miss Gilbert, Dean of Girls Administration Promotes Smooth Flight Smooth, successful take-offs and landings in and out of the school years of Avenal High School are attributed to our administration. By its care- fully planned program we, the stu- dents, derive the utmost benefits from our education. The culmina- tion of this school year again will be the take-off of another graduating class, and without the efforts of our administration, this smooth take-off would not have come into being. These missiles need their operators to control and guide them before take-off. And so the faculty of Avenal High School are similar to these operators. Under their care- ful supervision, co-operation, and informative teaching, we, the students, are guided before our take-off into the world that presents the horizons of responsibilities, careers, and life itself. Just as the success of the guided missiles de- pends upon the people who operate them, so does our success depend upon our teachers. For their unfailing work and friendship, we all are thanlvful ! The education, maturity, and interests they have gained will be valuable in whatever way of life they choose. On a smaller scale the incoming freshmen found a new world of knowledge and activities in Avenal High School. When they sponsored the Valentine Dance, the class of 1967 realized that co-operation, responsibility, and teamwork are of the essence if a successful project is to be completed. We hope that the freshman class has enjoyed and profited by its first year in high school, for it is, indeed, a new phase of adjustment that is a building block upon which the other experiences of their lives will rest. ' 64 Student Council Harmonizes Its Leadership with Kennedy Philosophy of Re-Emphasis on Americanism The 1964 Student Council, guided by its President, Ray Moore, began the year with high ideals and creative goals. Among these, as one of their many projects, the council bright- ened up the library with some attractive plants. Another creative accomplishment was that of the novel Christmas Dance. The council dared to break long tradition and provide live entertainment with a band. One more outstanding achievement by the council was their par- ticipation to the Fall Leadership Day of District 15 in Exeter. The council benefited greatly by this experience. Another goal for the council was the repairing of the pool table in the Recreation Center. Even though the goal was somewhat expensive, the council consented its use in the past and looked to its future use to pay for itself. The council again looked to the future with foundation plans for a student center. To really break tradition and help create something entirely new for Avenal High, the Council supported the creation of the American Field Service program for an exchange student from abroad. All in all, the council had accomplished what it set out to do - to institute high ideals and creative goals. Did the doorbell ring. Mrs. Ritter? Why, Mr. Spindler — you bold thing, you! ' Practice makes perfect; yet this proverb seems to have been disproved by the amateur theatre group, directed by the bossy and dominating Mrs. Pampinelli, that practices in the first act of Torch Bearers. Mrs. Ritter, who is positive that her starring role will give her fame on Broadway; Mrs. Fell, the sweet li ' l ol ' lady with a man-trappin mind; Mr. Spindler, the brain- less and incompetent helper of Mrs. Pampinelli; Mr. Hossefrosse, the forgetful and suave actor; Miss McCrickett, the young, pert, and delightful actress; teen-aged Teddy Spearing, interested in jazz and gals, and Mr. Twiller, the happy-go-lucky and stumbling actor all put forth their best efforts to produce a play worthy of an Oscar. All during the first scene humor and more than a touch of reality are combined, climaxed when Mr. Ritter, aghast at seeing his wife ' s acting , falls in a dead faint from the top of the piano. Finally the big night arrives, and the second act shows the zany anxieties of a cast: lost props, late actors, falling scenery, loss of memory, lighting problems, and a curtain that won ' t open for curtain calls. While Mr. Twiller and Mrs. Ritter get stuck in a doorway and Teddy faints, Mrs. Pampinelli continues to direct the play in her usual flighty and imperious manner. In the third act the play being over, the cast adjourns to a victory party; however Mrs. Ritter returns home to discover her husband in a rage! After seeing his wife ' s acting, Mr. Ritter is sure tliat it will be impossible for Iiim to hold his head high in public. As Mrs. Ritter bursts into tears, Mrs. Fell and Mrs. Pampinelli arrive and thoroughly upbraid Mr. Ritter for his lack of appreciation of culture and talent. While the argument continues, Higgens answers the phone, and as a result of tlie conversation Mrs. Ritter is offered a movie con- tract! The suspense mounts. Is it love or money? ? ?? Love wins, and Mrs. Ritter decides to keep her home intact and stay with her husband rather than become a star And they live happily ever after ! I tell you, Mr. Hossefrosse, he ruined the scene! Someday you ' ll learn that the bird ' s wing gester is the only gesture! he: MOUSE THAT This year the Senior class presented the hit comedy, The Mouse That Roared. The exceptionally humorous satire tells of the strife of a very tiny duchy named Grand Fenwick. The minute country ' s export market was stolen when an imitation of their precious wine, Pinot Grand Fenwick, was suddenly being manufactured in the United States. To meet the financial demands. Grand Fenwick decided to declare war on the United States. The true motive of the plan, which was to lose the war and receive financial aid from the generous United States, is known only by the Duchess Gloriana, Count Mountjoy, and Mr. Benter, however. The army is finally organized and a simple minded back- woodsman known as Tully Bascom leads the forces. They invade New York City in broad daylight with bows and arrows ! By some ridiculous fluke, they capture the Q-bomb which puts the United States at their mercy. However, the play does end happily. The United States is forced to pay an annual tribute to Gloriana of twelve dozen pomogranites. The microscopic country, five miles long by three miles wide, tells the rest of the world no war and lives happily ever after as the little mouse with the power of a mighty lion.
