As Sophomores, the class started out the school year with a knock-down, drag-out initiation of thc Freshmen. The Welcoming Dance was a huge success and was one of the best of the year, outside of the Hallowe'en dance, also put on by the Sophomores. The class is hoping to go through the rest of their years at Avenal High School in the same successful manner as they had this year! It is concerned with the problems and welfare of the student body and the community. One of the most important accomplish- ments of the council this year has been the completion of a revision of the constitution. Other events sponsored by the Student Council which were heartily received by the student body were the annual Freshman Reception and the Christmas Dance. The Exchange Assembly, also under the direction of the council, was immensely enjoyed by the Coalinga students. Due to an unusual football schedule the financial status of the student body was exceptionally low. The members of the Student Council receive numerous benefits from their experi- ence on the council, among them being the art of student government. -J- .X . .J Allene Bryant Mr. Halley Miss Gilbert Mr. Grant Letty Wilen Treasurer Advisor Advisor Advisor Manager of Girls Activities W- E., 5 ' A 5 i i, oi Leroy Odale Val Whitford Eddie Nabors Doris Langford Rudy Chavarra Sergeant-at-Arms Junior Class Head Cheer Leader CSF Representative Manager of Representative Boys' Activities 3 i Jack: Frank John Bellamy Barbara Woods Doug Preston Rosiland Northey Annual Editor Freshman Class Business Manager Senior Class Freshman Class Representative of Annual Representative Representative SECOND SEMESTER OFFICERS. N 4 -fz if-nf 559 At the beginning of the first sem- ester our CSF was small in number. The group justified their number by being host and hostess to the District Fall CSF Conference. This was the first Conference held on our campus and the first CSF Conference of this district to be held on a school day. We were proud of our whole school and it was fun showing our plant to our visitors. II: was suggested that some of us were getting training for future vocations-Chamber of Com- mercel. Nevertheless, the weather was beau- tiful and the school glowed in antici- pation of visitors. Our speakers, Mr. Reilly, Dist. Supt., Mr. Silva, Prin., and Dave Morris, Student Body Presi- dent, set the pace for a worthwhile meeting. Reverend Roland Meredith, guest speaker, gave an inspiring talk on What Are You Worth? Business, discussion groups, lunch- eon, and entertainment followed. Indeed the Avenal CSF can be proud of their first conference, The freshmen were eligible for membership the second semester, so our numbers were greatly increased. We attended the spring conference at Madera. THEY'RE ALL LAUGHING COOKING MUST BE FUN SEIIIJ Seco Club is open to all interested girls who have had, or who are taking, a course in Homemaking. The Club serves as a proving ground for techniques learned in Homemaking Classes and it also forms an active social group for girls with similar interests. Seco Club activities vary with the in- terests of the members but most years' calendars seem to include the following: A welcome party for new girls in school, a Christmas party, a children's Easter party, a farewell party for Senior girls, and a members' swim and cook out. This year the club enjoyed a most successful Pa, Ma and Men night, Many informative and interesting dem- onstrations and programs have been en- joyed by the girls this year. And the vari- ous parties and teas, etc., have been fun, as well as affording opportunities to practice social skill and techniques that all good homemakers need to cultivate. A. was started with a number of new members replacing members of the previous vear and a new advisor, Mrs. Crook. The calendar was filled with different activities from beginning to end. Freshmen and new members were put to the test when the Initiation and Slumber Party was given in their honor. A solemn ceremony was held as each new member pledged to abide by the laws of the G. A. A. Constitution. The Annual Mother-Daughter Banquet was held in February where talent was exhibited and a delicious meal of turkey and all the trimmings was served. An All- School Dance was presented by the G. A. A., in April, which was a huge success. Another annual event, the G. A. A. Girls League installation of officers was held in May. First on the sport's list was swimming which was refreshing to everyone after spending long hours in class during the last warm days of summer. Volleyball brought everyone out to games with a high rating of competition. Basketball was extra rough with the girls trying their best to win for their team, using sportsmanship and skill. Hockey and speedball were games featuring a variety of skills and requiring techniques of control and teamwork. Tennis and badminton were alternates for the enjoyment of learning the individual skills needed for those games. All the girls are looking forward to another year of enjoyment as they have experienced in the past year. side, Nancy Arnold, Pat Watkins sette Yraceburu, Colleen Mericle, in Mohler. Ir is a very good program consist- ing of quite a variety of sports. The girls started the year off with swimming and volleyball. This year, with the new P. E. teacher, Mrs. Crook, the girls enjoyed dancing. Not only did they have folk dancing as they had had before, but also some modern and popular dance. So boys you had better watch out lest the girls outdo you with some of their new dance steps. Next came basketball. The winners of each period were declared champions. With the coming of spring. the girls switched to playing outside. Some periods played speedball, while others played speed-a-way. This was a new game con- sisting of some football rules and some speedball rules. Speed-a-way proved to be a very interesting experiment. Tennis and badminton were next on the calendar of events. Baseball and swimming then wound up the activities for the year. GIRLS ONE TWO THREE FOUR 1 - v y LAST STOPMATHE GYM 'g s x x vu. Q . Q s , 1. .- ,f FOURTH PERIOD CHAMPION BASKETBALL TEAM Physical Education isn't just some- place where you can get rid of that excess energy stored up from a class of History or Latin but a place to learn and develop new slclils to enable you to play a better game. Through Physical Education, a girl learns to give as well as talce. She learns to get along with others through par- ticipation in team sports and to rely on her own abilities in individual sports. So you can see there is a great deal more to physical education than just playing a game. NIINIIEHTIPIIIATEIJ PEHSUNNEL MRS. NELLIE HENDERSON MRS.
