TURK The graduates of January and June, 1949, dedicate this twelfth issue of The Headlight to the faculty, the office staff and custodial force of The Brooklyn High School of Automotive Trades. It is with pleasure and honor that the outgoing students offer to the operating personnel of their alma mater this evidence of their appreciation. It is to them that we owe our thanks for their cooperation in making us, the products of the school, worthy of the slo- gan, uManhood, Service, Labor, Citizenship. Dear Grad uates: I want to congratulate you, the members of the February and June Graduating Classes, on the satisfactory completion of your vocational high school course. I want you to remember that your school program has been followed not only to help you in your school life, but it has also been a preparation for the years ahead. You should constantly keep in mind those qualities which you will need for success, namely, scholarship, vocational elliciency, character, and service. I have observed you during the past years and have seen you make remarkable progress. I feel sure your eiforts will be rewarded because you will offer the above attributes or qualities to the world to be received and accepted. Bear in mind Your labor is for future hours. Advance! Spare not! Nor look Behind! The three years which we spent at Automotive may be considered the cornerstone of our future. In these past three years we learned to live and work with our neighbors and to appreciate them, disregarding all prejudices. With a general educa- tion, which will enable us to live a happy life as good citizens, we were taught a trade by which we can become productive factors in our society imme- diately upon graduation. The future before us is uncertain. The world is in a state of chaos and tumult with belligerent nations constantly plotting in order to gain an advantage in power. Some of us may join the armed forces, some will remain in the field of auto mechanics: still others will assume positions other than these. Regardless of what we do or where we are, the education, training, and experience we acquired while attending Brooklyn Automotive will prove to be an asset always to be cherished. O'Connor and the faculty and students of Automotive. It thanks the advertisers. It also extends its appreciation to Dodd Bros., Headlight printer. Particularly, does the staif feel grateful to Mr. Edward Tarr, school pho- tographer, whose constantly cheerful cooperation over the years has been so helpful and timely. HOLUB EARL WITKOWSKY, Literary JACK DRUTMAN, Art VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach., MR. MORTON ROMAN The basketball team opened the season with Paul Gergel and Willie Boatwright as co-captains. The veterans of the team were Bo Erias, John Popajohn, Walter Rasby, Stanley Levenson, Walter Yarmack, Peter Rogalle, and Ben Hagguist. In addition we had the boys who had come up through the ranks via the Junior Varsity. The team, through the patient and diligent coaching of Mr, Roman, opened the season with a victory over the New York School of Printing whom they van- quished on the home court by the score of 69 to 43. Their next encounter gave them their first taste of defeat. After a nip and tuck struggle with Brooklyn Tech, in which an overtime period had to be played, our boys succumbed by the narrow margin of 51 to 4-9. The defeat by Tech did not daunt the spirit of our boys as they rebounded into the winning column by defeating in close games both Eastern District and Samuel Gompers. Then the Mechanics lost to East New York by the convincing margin of 68 to 49. This defeat again spurred on the boys as they went on to victory in the next six games. Automotive rode rough shod over Westinghouse, Tilden, Hamilton, Boys High, Brooklyn Tech and Eastern District. However, Automotive lost to East New York and Thomas Jefferson. At this point prospects of Automotive getting into the All City Playoifs were anything but bright. It looked as though Automotive were doomed either to a third or fourth which would have eliminated the Mechanic Hoopsters from further con- sideration. However, by a miracle of miracles, the Greenpointers gained a triple tie for second in as spectacular a finish as could have been possible. East New York, Brooklyn Tech and Automotive had to settle the perplexing problem of this unexpected tie. Good Fortune favored Auto as it drew a bye. East New York defeated Brooklyn Tech in a bitterly contested match. The Mechanics had their vengeance for two previous defeats by coming through in the clutch to the sweet tune of 38 to 33. Automotive was now in the playoffs for the city championships. However, the terrific strain of the season wind-up was too much. The boys were not up to snuff as they lost to Long Island City by a score of 55 to 44, This game was played at Madison Square Garden. High scorer for the team was George Wenz who averaged twenty points per game and who scored more than any other player in the league. George made the All-Brooklyn Team and also played in the Herald Tribune All Star Charity Game at Madison Square Garden. Paul Gergel and Willie Boatwright followed up in the high scoring class. Yarmack was outstanding and it was unfortunate for Auto when he graduated in January and could not compete during the second half of the season. Mr. Roman is to be congratulated for the line job he performed in bringing our boys into the homestretch. VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM Coach, MR. They are hoping to make a good showing for themselves and the school as in the past. The teams of the past have won seven city vocational championships and two Brooklyn-Queens championships. They will again play against academic and vocational schools. The team is looking to win and annex another champion- ship. The team is made up of such stars as Wasiluk, Commisso, Capece, Esposito, and Scala. This year as in the past, the Brooklyn Dodgers have allowed us to use Ebbets Field to play East New York on May 21 and permitted students to see the Dodgers play if they hought Booster tickets. The team and the school wish to thank the Dodgers very much. CROSS COUNTRY TEAM Coach, Ma. HY MARCUS This year the Cross Country Team's prospects were not too bright. The Auto Tracksters had lost many men. Also injuries and drop outs did not add any en- couraging tone to the situation. However, the team once again managed to go through a rather successful season. This, of course, was attributable to Coach Marcus. ln dual meets we defeated Eastern District, Alexander Hamilton, New Utrecht, and Boys High. Automotive's only defeat was at thehands of Brooklyn Tech, the Brooklyn Champions. Thus, such a performance was a feather in our caps. In the open meets we also performed creditably. In the N.Y.U. Meet the Mechanics finished a respectable sixth. In the Manhattan Meet, the McCarren Park boys almost duplicated with a ninth - this without Jernigan who had dropped out. Then our boys were seriously handicapped by the temporary loss of Zapata, one of the team's mainstays. This was reflected in the Fordham Meet when we finished sixteenth and also in the Seton Hall Meet when we finished nineteenth. The mainsprings of the team were: Captain Manny Zapata, Mat Pandolfo, George Chami, Robert Atkinson, Robert Goldrick, Phil Vargas, Al Share, Bob Whitehead, Henry Blum, H. Nelson, George Rudolph, Chris Demakapoulis and Berni Williams. For next season we expect to have a stronger team in: Co-Captains Mat Pan- dolfo and Robert Atkinson, George Chami, George Rudolph, Bernard Williams, Phil Vargas and Chris Demakapoulis. These boys will be the carry over nucleus for a fine competitive group. In addition, Coach Marcus in all likelihood will again come up with a few surprises by developing other potentials just as he has so often done in the past. Watch Automotive next year. They will be in the headlines but definitely. TRACK TEAM Coach, MR. EMIL LILIENSTEIN Automotive's Track Team, as in the past, was a credit to our school during the current year. It maintained its reputation of building good citizens and competitors on an even keel with its predecessors. The speedsters this year competed against rugged competition. They managed to make a fine showing among the academic schools and showed themselves as the foremost competition from the vocational side. Ably led by Co-captains Logan and Bison, the Automotive Squad took part in ten indoor meets and was able to score in each. The season opened with the Stuy- vesant Meet on December 18th in which our novice mile relay team of Kennebrew, Boone, Edwards and Glover easily outdistanced the field for a first place. At the Grover Cleveland Meet our mile relay team took a second place through the com- bined efforts of Rison, Atkinson, Williams and Edwards. On the same day, at the St. Peters Meet in Jersey City, Les Logan took the half mile run while Jenkins and Ford placed third and fifth in the 70 yd. dash. At the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Meet our 880 relay team of Bison, Boone, Edwards, and Jenkins took a fourth place. Following that our tracksters ran in the Bronx Championships where our medley relay team of Williams running the 660 yd. leg, Rison the 4.40 yd. leg, Jenkins the 220 yd. leg, and Zapata the 880 yd. leg, took first place while our 880 yd. relay team of' Ford, Gaines, Figueroa and Davis captured a third. In the l.C.A.A.A.A. Meet our mile relay team of Edwards, Atkinson, Williams, and Rison took a fourth. Lastly, in the P.S.A.L. Championships our 1200 yd. relay team came up with a third. Much credit goes to Coach Lilienstein. Also a word of praise is not amiss for our up and coming trackmen. They are Dekie, Smith, Deblanco, Murray, Demher, Koskrity, Whitehead, Clarke, Hutchinson, Bell, Carlopia, Sayegh, Hawkins, C. Williams and the rest of the boys. The outdoor schedule is: Seton Hall - April 22-23, Penn Relays - April 29-30, Brooklyn College -- May 7th, Automotive - May 10th, Boys High - May 14th, Novice Champs - May 20th, Dwight Morrow at Englewood - May 21st, Brooklyn Champs - May 24th, Schenectady - May 28th and I.C.A.A.A.A. -- May 28th, Outdoor Championships - June lst, and the All City Championships which will wind up the season. Mr. Edward P. O'Connor, Principal, present- ing Open Point Trophy to Bill Miles, Coach of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High -School. Charles Cappozzoli! of Bayside, winner of Arthur T. Carroll Memorial Mile, receiving trophy from Francis Carroll, Acting Superin- tendent, District 50. 11th ANNUAL TRACK AND FIELD MEET Meet Director, MR. MORTON J. ROMAN Automotiveis eleventh Track and Field Meet was held at McCarren Park on May 11, 1949. With over one thousand athletes competing, fifty-five schools throughout New York and New Jersey were represented. ln the Open Events Bishop Loughlin, with 36 points won the trophy. Trailing were Boys High with 33, George Wasliington with 10. Auto- motive, the host school, tallied 8 points to tie for fourth place along with Bayside. Outstanding competitors were Vernon Dixon from Loughlin, Charles Cappozzoli of Bayside and Jim Conaway of Boys High. Dixon won the 100 yd. dash in 0:10.2, Capozzoli copped the mile run in 44:27.11 and Conaway breezed to a new meet record in the 220 yd. dash, covering the distance in 0:22.1. Leading contenders from Automotive were Don Davis who won the broad jump with a leap of 20 feet and 7 inches. Lew Jenkins finished fourth in the same event. Atkinson, Jenkins, Ford and Davis finished fourth in the 880 relay to account for our 8 points. In the novice events DeWitt Clinton garnered first place honors, a total of 21 points. Forest Hills, Woodrow Wilson and Erasmus Hall followed with 10, 8, and 7 points respectively. To Jim Conaway Went the George F. Pigott Jr. trophy for turning in the most meritorious perform- ance of the meet. This is the second straight year in which he has been awarded this trophy. The Arthur J. Carroll award went to the winner of the open mile race, Charles Cappozzoli of Bayside. In addition to the award, the winner received an Arthur J. Carroll Memorial Scroll. The 44-0 yard relay for elementary schools was won by P.S, 25, P..S. 54- was second, P.S. 54's second team was third. The Winner in the 44-0 yard junior high school relay was P.S. 35. These teams, in winning, received trophies donated by the Green- point Lions Club. In the annex 4-40 yard relay T 11 emerged the victor with T 10 and T 8 finishing second and third. The main building 880 yard relay was taken by 7V 67, whose team consisted of Stocker, Lesuk, Boresky, and Clemente. Again, we wish to thank the teachers and students of Automotive and the oflicials for helping to make our eleventh Annual Track and Field Meet an out- standing success. Also to the Lions Club of Green- point goes our deepest appreciation and gratitude for its never ending support of our meet. STUDENT COUNCIL Faculty Advisor, Ma. Isaaai. Kaisaa The Student Council is an elected body chosen to repre- sent the various official classes by bringing forth the demo- cratic principles and responsibilities in the daily routine of school life. The delegates of the council, which is composed of class presidents, meet every Thursday during the club period and plan out the term schedule of entertainment and duties to be performed. The president, vice-president and the secretary are the chief officials of the council. They are elected each term by the G. O. Members of the school after several weeks of intensive campaigning on the part of the qualified candidates. Oiiicers last term were: President, Patsy Fratello: Vice- President, Nick Mongiello and Secretary David Forman. Officers this term are: President, Gregory D' Angelog Vice- President, Pat De Gennaro and Secretary Richard Dillon. THE SPARK 'PLUG Faculty Advisors, Das. GIANNQTTA AND EGAN The Spark Plug is published twice a term under the supervision of Dr. Giannotta and Dr. Egan. It is distri- buted to all G. O. members without charge. The Spark Plug has a large staff of reporters who cover the news occurring throughout the school. In addition, our paper has a staff of editors who are responsible for editing the copy, preparing it for the printer, writing headlines, reading proof and dnmmying the paper. This work is done as part of a journalism course which any qualified student can substitute for his regular composition course. The editors for the fall term were John Ritondo and Anthony La Rocca. Charles Bottcher was the editor for the spring term. DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS Faculty Advisor, Ma. Sari-I J. KELLY The Drum and Bugle Corps, under the leadership of Mr. Kelly, once again has had a banner year of activity. Its outstanding accomplishment during the past year was the Golden Jubilee Parade down Fifth Avenue. The Corps worked very hard to get itself into shape for the parade and its efforts were more than amply rewarded by a com- mendable showing. The corps also took part in the com- mencement exercises. As usual, the squad played a leading roll in the Track and Field Meet held during May. Members of the squad are: C. Massa, E. Ashcroft, V. Napoli, F. Kitzerow, S. Odrichowski, J. Bodnaruk, P. Schure, D. Clement, D. Brown, J. Koeber, E. Lucas, J. Palazzo, R. Sanchez, S. Sanso, C. Stoffo, L. Uberti, B. Sundsback, G. Christensen, V. Gambuzza, G. Wilson, J. Fox, D. Dolan, and R. Creasy. MUSIC DRAMA CLUB Faculty Advisor, Ma. Hi-:Nav DANIELOWITZ Automotive's largest and most active club is the Music Drama Club. Under the guidance and careful supervision of Mr. Danielowitz, the Glee Club, as in the past, enter- tained during the present term the students, their parents and the faculty on many different occasions. The Music Drama boys are carefully selected by Mr. Danielowitz for their ability to sing and their willing- ness to learn and perform. Any students from the fourth to the twelfth term may join. Hence, those with any talent are urged and encouraged to join. Some of the outstanding performances during the past year were music presentations at Parents' Night, at the graduation exercises, and the offering of the well known Christmas Program. These episodes indeed have helped build and maintain the popularity of the Music Drama Club at Automotive. THE SCHOOL BAND Conductor, Ma. HENRY Dannzcowrrz Despite the fact that some of the members of the band were lost because of graduation, it has managed, with several newcomers, to fulfill its usual duties in entertaining the students at assembly programs this term., The boys of the band are deeply grateful to Mr. Danielowitz for the time and effort he has put into con' ducting the band, and for the splendid job he has done. The hand makes a most noteworthy appearance at the Commencement Exercises and at the school dances. It is always in there helping to supply extra pep whenever there is a rally going on. All in all, it always supplies line enter- tainment for the student body. These are the members of the band: F. D'Agnese of SVS, G. Montalhano of SVS, J. Restio of 6V39, S. Korn of 6V4l, N. Marino of SV29, H. Jackson of SV8, L. Christian of 5V-4, A. Lodico of SV33, and B. Pampellonio of 7V1. LIBRARY STAFF Lilirarimz, Ma. Haavsv ADAM Mr. Adam, our librarian, continues to do a fine job in keeping our school library up to date on all books, magazines and literature which may help the students in any way. Mr. Adam has a very competent library stall' which as- sists him in operating the library. The staff s duties con- sist of issuing and collecting books, preparing new books for circulation and keeping the library neat and clean. Members of the staff are: A school - Putinas, Capt., Lombardi, Sambucci, Teichner, Geiger, Cahn, Fiore, Scan- diffio, Hatton, Booker, Grossfeld, Lynch, Forfa, Schmidt, Katz, Maggiolo, Smith, Schipani, Frankel, Osborne, Zappoli, Bochicchio. B school - Connelly, La Penna, LaMarco, Magnolia, Romano, Arkin, Zervakos, Zinck, Gorman, Foti, Messina, Miscoine, Pederson, Shalkowsky, DeCanio, Ferraro, Marciano, Oriol, Gambnzza, Muzzonigro, Magenheim, Os- borne, Carlson, Hatton, and Goldberg. SWIMMING TEAM Coach., Mn. FRANK Bauman For the second successive season Automotive's Swimming Team competed in the borough P.S.A.L. meets of both the academic and vocational schools. The members of the team worked out twice a week at the Bedford Y.M.C.A. pool during the fall term and at the Metropolitan Park Department pool during the spring term. Although the team failed to win any of the six meets in which they competed, they gained valuable experience in competing with other schools. CHARLES FIESER This term, as in previous terms, quite a number of boys have been enrolled in the Farm Cadet Club with hopes of going to work on farms this summer. Last year, seventy- five boys from the Annex and the Main Building were sent to work on farms. These farms were located in Madison and Oneida Counties. During the meetings of the Farm Club, the members dis- cuss various problems they are likely to confront while they are on the farm. They also give serious consideration to the various kinds of farm machinery. Our boys fit well into this picture because of their experience in auto mechanics. Boys wishing to sign up for summer work receive appli- cations during May. Mr. Fieser carefully investigates all applications before deciding on what boys are qualified. He has done a fine job in lining up prospects for the coming year. SOCCER TEAM Coach, Ma. THOMAS HAYDEN The Soccer Team started the season with a few of last season's regulars.
