CLASS PROPHECY Hong Kong China may I7 I967 As I sat in my suite this morning awaiting my replacement as Ambassador to I-long Kong my thoughts were wandering Its funny how about half my graduating class has come to the East Why the richest man in I-long Kong i Mike Chambllss better known as the Millionaire Junk Man l think his book HOW TO MAKE A MILLION really sold When I tried to look out at my window at the street below my vision was blocked by my window washer Peering closely into his face I recognized Charlie Kerlin Why Charlie I said climb in and talk a while Once inside he started talking about our old school mates You know Elizabeth Goodson and Betty Joyce Golden are married to two brothers now I think Elizabeth s address is IO Downing Street London England began Charlie and Guy Bulger and Clarence Barnett have gone in the chewing gum business Guy makes it while Clarence shows the people how to chew it And I understand Joe Murphee is their publicity stunt man People come from all over Hong Kong to see him wiggle his ears' Yes I replied and did you know Pat Phillips is the social secretary to the Emperors wife? No came Charlnes answer But what about Mary Inzer Walthall and Sarah Louise Gaddis being big social bugs? Say I wonder what happened to Jack: Surles and Jean Henson dancers at the Club Essyco owned by the one and only Malcolm Esco You might know he d be where the girls arel You know I saw an ad in the paper today for Rick: Kirkiland Enterprises I wonder if that is our old Richard Kirkland? muttered Charlie Yes hes a lack of all trades Did you hear about Ronald Rogers teaching the Oriental people how to farm? Well I guess I d better go now said Charlie before the manager Donald Scott tTres me Later as I was walking down the crowded street I noticed a little confusion Ap proachtng the scene I recognized Terry Stanheld one of Hong Kong s chief peddlers of genuine American Confederate money trying to convince Nell Hogan a tourist that one American Confederate dollar was worth all of tlfteen dollars But as usual Nell was arguing him down As I passed a theatre I saw a big sign advertising William Elvis Culp the baritone opera singer of Hong Kong I-Its accompanist was Bill Quinn The editor of the I-long Kong Daily was none other than Patricia Powell It was quite surpr sing to find our editor of the Prattaugan who had vowed so many times that she would never undertake the iob of editor of anything with this 'ob Ht Patricia How about a copy of your latest paper'P I asked Sure' Say there surely are some interesting stones in it was Patrtcias reply 24 I I , . ll I ' - I , . . , .
