Fitch School and thousands of other schools are in existence hecause the young people who have gone on, have shown a willingness to clefcnil with their lives, if necessary, the right of all young Americans to the same opportunities that they themselves receiyecl. These young Americans have not left home, fam- ily. and friends as :1 matter of choice. They have gone to do their duty because their training at home and in school has been such as to df-vt-lop a spirit of responsibility. VVe make no special distinction at this time he- tween those members of the armeil forces still with us and those who have made the supreme sacrifice.

William Vaughn, a member of the Fitch High graduating class of 1938, receiving the D. S. C. from Lt. Colonel Earl Sweeney of the Air Force. He received this decoration for a dangerous mapping mission over Bougainville. He has been wounded twice in combat and has been chosen the outstanding young man of the year by the Fraternal Crder of Eagles. Sergeant Vaughn strafed Iap search- lights in a raid on Wewak and received the Silver Star for gallantry in action. He was wounded in action in the South Pacific last 10 lap planes in battle before it was shot down.
