G. Gregg, past Principal. P. T. A. Getting to Know You is the first line ot a popular song. It is also the T959-60 theme of a very active and important group at Austin. This group has a number of obiectives which it strives to achieve. The members raise the standards of homelite, thereby minimizing the possibility of an individual boy or girl becoming a delinquent. This organization actively helps promote local, state, and federal legislation for the adequate care and protection of children and young adults. Mrs. Spivey, president ot the PTA, presents checks to the chairmen of the Girls' and Boys' Physical Education Depart- ments, Miss Hotmeister and Mr. Sullivan, with which to buy new equipment. f. But even in ancient times people felt the need of a device to signal the beginning or end of a period of time, and a prominent mentor of the day developed the first alarm clock. It consisted of an intricate and ornate dragon-type figure with the back hollowed out. A thin stick was inserted at one end, and the other end was lighted. A string with a metal ball on each end was placed over the stick and hung down the sides of the dragon. The position of the string upon the stick Was determined by the length of time one Wanted to elapse before being signalled. When the string burned through, the metal balls dropped onto the metal plate and caused the alarm. 29
