Classes were quickly resumed and homework once again troubled the free spirits. IOINERS INVITED Amid festoons and gay decorations, symbolic of the ideals they represent, the clubs of Austin High School, presented on February I5 their traditional twice yearly membership drive. A general, carnival spirit prevailed as students paraded from one cleverly arranged booth to another affixing their signatures to the rolls of the various groups. PETITIONS AND BALLOTS Nomination by petition and voting by indi- vidual ballot were both successfully innovated in the Iunior class election. Happy-go-lucky William Hartung received the honor of being president, and pole-vaulting William McKeon became vice-president. Pretty Marion Smith was chosen secretary and Chester Mitchell was given the job of taking care of the class money, while Ioe Battaglia tnot picturedl won the office of sergeant-at-arms. AUSTIN AIRS The girls' band, generally referred to as Chi- cago's Finest Marching Lassies, under the direction of Captain Condy, held its semi-annual concert in Rockwood Hall on February l8. There was a very generous turnout which in part re- paid the girls for their colorful support of the football team all season. SOAP AND WATER Grand support was also given by the entire school to the clean-up campaign which was officially launched on February 25 with Prin- cipal Wilbur Wright commissioning the com- mittee headed by Betty Bippus and Donald Chill, co-chairman, to take a free hand in mak- ing the student body cleanliness conscious. The adviser, Mr. Thompson helped make the undertaking a great success. KINGS OF SPORTS All-city football, all-city senior track, first place fencing, and second place swimming laurels were acquired by hard-working, brilliant stars in Austin's sport firmament. FOR BIGGER APPLES Oh boy! Socials are back again! The socials, discontinued in the fall, came back again in the form of a baseball social during March. Page Twenty five
