1938 al rqadin As the school year 1937-38 draws to a close it seems the general consensus of student and teacher opinion that this has been a good year, a normal year in most respects and an outstanding year in more par- ticulars than one. All-time high in nation-wide publicity for any high school student was achieved in October and Ianuary by Austin's own Wild Bill de Correvont, Who again and again put his name and fame and with it that of his school into the big headlines not only of Chicago papers, but of the sports pages of the leading papers from coast to coast as well. Perhaps Bill's success and spirit were contagious: at any rate the year pro- duced other players of top rank in football and in other sports as well. And other stars in other fields. We Won, We Won! joyously resounded through Austin's halls throughout the year. Like echoes to the football season came Track and Fencing cham- pionships, honors in scholarship, writing, music, and art. A year of loyal devotion and loyal support, too, making Austin in all respects a typical American high school at its best. A year to kindle ambition for emulation and further achievement! THE STAFF

Manga This peace time year in our own United States has been marked variously by internal struggles. Yet, out of these struggles our country is emerging, We trust, better and stronger. Our own Austin High School has likewise, during the year, become better and stronger through the struggles of groups to raise achievement levels. Through the continued loyalty and cooperation of vari- ous parents and community groups, we have been able to further special opportunities in education. Through the plan of Superintendent Iohnson, we have been able to increase our personnel work and to adapt the school better to the individual. Through a further development of our student government, we have furthered the cause of stu- dent democracy. We have special reason to be proud of our boys' achievements this year in the world of sports and of the loyalty with which our school has supported them. Our groups have also shown their leadership in the World of Art, Music, Iournalism and in various phases of civic effort and scholarship. ln graduating the largest classes in Austin's history, we are therefore looking backward over a year of success. We should likewise look forward toward years of success- ful achievement and citizenship for the members of our classes of l938.
