E E 1 Q BOARD OF EDUCATION PROMOTES EL PASO SCHOOL ACTIVITIES A -'a:i'7 : F Q is N. s Congratulations to Austin High School on her thirtieth anniversary! For thirty years this school has rendered outstanding service to the young people of El Paso. In 1930. the city of El Paso had three high schools and 21 elementary schools in the El Paso Independent School District - a total of 25, including Technical Vocational School. In March, 1960, we have 50 schools - seven high schools, three intermediate schools, and 40 elementary. CThis does not include schools in the Ysleta District.J Our school census was 18,836 in 1930. It now numbers 4B,454. Numbers do not measure efficiency. 'But our schools have improved in the quality of education offered our students, as well as in the quality of teachers directing the curriculum. Many examples can be given of improved oppor- tunities: Enriched courses in the lower grades and in our high schook, conver- sational Spanish in the grade schools, new equipment in some high schools for learning languages findividual tape recording for studentsl, Distributive Edu- cation courses for many, improved equipment in a new Technical High School, and more emphasis on science and languages. Our schools are far from perfect, but we believe they are good. We hope to make them better. The Board of Education realizes that any school is only as good as its teachers, and appreciates the good work of our teachers. We now have very few teachers who do not list at least a college degree among their credentials. Our administrative staii is excellent. Again, we congratulate you, Austin High School, and anticipate many more years of service from you. Board of Education, El Paso Independent School, District, I. Leighton Green, M.D., Pres. ,...-Q-w 'M MR H. E. CHARLES MR. KEITH APPLEBY DR. I. LEIGHTON GREEN. M.D. Superintendent of schools Assistant Superintent of schools President of School Board 28
