Wafuf '7em7m The first assembly of the year was given by the SFA Dance Band. The band played jazz and popular songs and made the assembly a great success. Members of the band were Dave Baylor, Steve Harris, Cary Farris, Robert Hamerslag, Mickey Sandgarten, David LaBauve, Doug Simmons, and Don Hickling. The fall semester Student Council president and vice-president promoted- a Talent Show Assembly as a money-making project. The Corn Cobs were a big hit. Their hilarious actions kept the audience in a roar of laughter. Other groups appearing on the show were the Chan- tones, the Shades, and the Classmen. Pat Rucker, Connie Medina, Martha Amyx, and Rudy Banda appeared as single acts. The Mixed Choir presented an assembly dur- ing the fall semester. Of the several songs sung, two of them proved special favorites with the students. They were Oklahoma', and Mr, Touchdown. During the week of February 16-20, a Brother- hood assembly was presented. Three men repre- senting the different faiths came and talked to Austin Highiers about the purpose of Brother- hood VVeek, which is to bring about better re- lationship and remove prejudices caused by ignorance. Ewa Bu! Sandra Anderson, senior, was named Austin High's Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. The Dipping Trouble, an essay by jane Mor- ton, SFA junior, was awarded second prize in the historical essay contest sponsored by the Friends of the Austin Public Library and the Austin American. National Honor Society president Iohn Stayton and members Margaret Starcke and Ralph Hanna were finalists in the National Honor Society scholarship tests. Richard Huffman, SFA senior, was among 27 students who placed in the honors group of the National Westinghouse Science Talent Search. He also is a National Merit Scholarship finalist. Linda Gilbert and Adolph Bach completed a medical science orientation course at the Austin State Hospital.
