EW S 5 1 f I A Wm' W' , 4 ll i XXX 753' FRIENDSHIP, FRIENDSHIP -The happy smiles of Don Jester and jo Frances Greene show why they were elected the friendliest boy and girl of Austin High. Friendliness was the watchword as Howdy Week came along, October 15-19, with a theme of Loyal F orever. All week long we wore name tags and signed each otherls Howdy Books, which we bought from the Student Council. The bulletin boards were decorated with tricky posters made by the social committee members. Near the end of the week, we elected a friend- liest boy and friendliest girl from the student body. Their names were announced by Mr. Baker at the Howdy Dance on Friday night, and they were presented with identification bracelets. Nominees for the honor of friendliest boy in Austin High were: Iim Aldridge, Richard Cast- ruita, Don Jester, Billy McCaleb and Hill Ry- lander. F riendliest girl nominees were Io Frances Greene, jewel Melton, jo Anna Murray, Susie Snowden and Colleen Woodson. From these students jo Frances Greene and Don Iester were chosen to represent the spirit of friendship at AHS. Io Frances is a senior, last year she was chosen as the queen of the Tri-High Track Meet and she is one of the 1956 Cheerleaders. Don was an outstanding member of the Maroon foot- ball team. He was made All-District linebacker for his efforts on the Varsity. The Howdy Dance was held in the gym im- mediately after the Austin-Harlandale football game. Stanley Carruth was Master of ceremo- nies. jerry Scarborough sang Scarlet Ribbons , Carolyn Calvert did an interpretative take-off on radio programs. Vincent Guarino, Phil Carson, Richard Castruita, and Don McCullough sang comedy songs. The gym was decorated with large, white, glittered letters spelling out Loyal Forever. In charge of Howdy Week was Betty joan Weide, assisted by Susie Snowden and Sally Anderson.

I I I Although it was the end of a gay summer interlude and we pretended great depression of spirits at returning to school, secretly we were glad. The first day of school is always an exciting event whether you are in the first grade or the twelfth. This is especially true of those who are embarking on their first year in senior high school. This year Austin High received a crop of new students from O. Henry, University, and Allan junior high schools. Along with the new stu- dents came twenty-six new teachers. All were excited and eager for the new year to begin. Almost as excited were the old juniors and seniors. The only difference was they tried very hard to conceal their excitement. The first thing which greeted the new sopho- mores during orientation was a pep rally in the auditorium led by the new cheerleaders. Then these fledgling AHS'ers went to their advisories to be greeted with the first of the seemingly endless line of cards to be filled out. Following this, they were taken on a tour of the building by members of the Red jackets. cv . fs WJ C' it THE BEGINNING OF THE END -Seniors register for their last year in Austin High.
