beginning, and th deep app FOREWORD On a memorable summer day in 1821 Stephen F. Austin led a group of determined pioneers into the rug- ged and unexplored Southwest. There Texas had its ere also a new way of life was begun. Our capital city is named for the man who led that first expedition to Texas. Our high school, one of the many insti- tutions of learning established in Texas since the beginning of public education one hundred years ago, also bears his name. To him and to all the others who paved the way for us and for the lives we enjoy, we owe our reciation and gratitude. Even more important, we should dedi- cate ourselves anew to carrying out the traditions and ideals which they initiated. This year, 1953-54, has been a pioneering one for us at Stephen F. Austin High School. The first year of sharing our privileges and opportunities with two newer, more modern high schools has afforded us many rich experiences in cooperation with others. Yet, Stephen F. Austin High School has retained its individual qual- ities as well, carrying on the traditions of scholarship and loyalty which are a of its heritage. It is to this rich heritage of school, city, and state that we have dedicated the pages of this book. In so doing we have attempted by picture and word to link the past and the present into a living record ot lite at Stephen F. Austin High School ' The true value of a yearbook lies in the pleasure which is derived from it. We, the Comet staff of 1954, sincerely hope that your 1954 Comet will preserve and recall the memories of your friends and your life at Stephen F. Austin High School.
