5 I I I From those who have gone before we received a legacy-a school well-loved and cherished. We accepted this heritage, together with the obligation to uphold our school's high standards and fine traditions. Now, we bestow on those yet to come this ever-growing legacy and the countless untouched opportunities. Within the walls of Austin High School we have found appreciation, understanding, and guidance. Our knowledge has not been derived from books alone, for we have learned to accept others as individuals and have found the difference between work and play. These discoveries will enable us to advance successfully into our different patterns of life. This book holds in its pages the memories of l952-53. lnasmuch as Austin High will soon experience a division of its student body, the l953 Comet is particularly valuable. This is actually the yearbook of yearbooks - the Comet of Comets - because it reflects the honors and experiences of nearly three thousand students. The staff of the l953 Comet earnestly hopes that every student will find this volume rich in the memories of the school year-a year in which the high standards and loyalty of the student body have shone through all events and circumstances.

cinema!! . . . We, the Comet Staff of 1953, are proud to dedicate this annual to on outstanding coach and an outstanding person, Mr. Toney Burger. Undoubtedly the finest coach in the state, Mr. Burger has led the Maroon and White to nine District Championships, six Bi-District Championships, and to the state finals three times in his fifteen years of guidance over the Austin High basketball teams. The Maroon baseball teams have never failed to win the district championship in lnterscholastic League competition. We were sometimes outplayed, but we were never outcoached. Mr. Burger's fighting spirit and desire to win never overshadowed his philosophy of Sportsmanship first . . . then Victory. The students of Austin are fortunate that Mr. Burger has devoted his life to youth and education. As he draws to a close his coaching career, we pay tribute to this tolerant, courageous, and understanding gentleman, Toney Burger, who we know will always be LOYAL FOREVER!
