The others nodded NVe have spoken they sard So the Star came and h1d herself 1n a pure wh1te rose on the mountam slde Here she could watch her people all day but seldom d1d any of them come up so hlgh so she was lonely By and by she left the mountam rose and took up her dwellmg 1n a pra1r1e flower Here for a whlle she was happy But the buffalo hunts soon began and great herds of the ammals swept by her restmg place unt1l she feared she would be trampled under the1r hoofs At last she could stand lt no longer so she rose and floated away searchmg for a better home As she passed on er a broad r1ver near the Indlan v1llages she saw her reflect1on m the vsater Pleased she sank nearer untrl she rested on the cool surface Here shall I l1ve she thought near to my people yet safe The next mornlng the water was covered w1th beautlful flowers whrte cool star l1ke The people dellghted vxent out on the r1ver1n the1r canoes and gl1d1ng between the whxte lll12S chantlng the1r pra1ses Wahbegwanee they called them Wahbegwanee the wh1te star flowers And thus ever smce have floated on Texas r1vers the wh1te water l1l1QS pure and perfect true star flowers HELEN PAYE PAssMoRE . , I . .
