A W Legend of the Prr Y Pear Once when trme was yet young a beautrful marden grew up rn a trrbe of Tejas Indrans Her father a rrch and powerful chref had looked favorably up on a match between hrs daughter and a chref of a strll more powerful nerghbor rng trrbe By unrtrng hrs warrrors and the brave youths of the other trrbe he hoped soon to be lord of an extensrve huntrng ground Many surtors all more or less desrrable had trred rn varn to wrn the young prrncess who lrke all mardens was born to love and be loved but was kept under a strrct guard and was never allowed to see or to speak to a srngle other man besrde her father She was the prrzel She was to be a grft to a chref' The vxhole vrllage was rrngrng wrth the news of the bravery of a certarn young warrror who had recently drstrngurshed hrmself rn battle The rmprrs oned prrncess had heard of thrs wonderful brave and longed to see hrm In sprte of her father s surverllance she managed to obtarn a glrmpse of hrm as he passed through the vrllage One look at thrs returnrng hero and her doom was rnevrtable Lrke a thunderbolt from a clear sky the guarded prrncess heard of the mar rrage of her rdol The vrllage was rn an uproar wrth the marrrage festrval No one thought of the sad jealous lrttle prrncess who sat alone rn her wrgwam prrson Frnally grrm and determrned she fled from her prrson She crept norselessly rnto her father s tent and snatched hrs dagger from the wall On hands and knees she returned to her hated prrson Resrgned and beautrful she knelt rn one last prayer to the Great Manrtou then wrth an unfalterrng hand she plunged the wrcked dagger rnto her throbbmg heart When mornrng came the prrson tent and the beautrful prrncess were mrss rng Where the marden fell rn death lay a bloody dagger and by rts srde an enormous prrckly pear wrth one lovely blossom Not a braxe dared to pluck the bloom for that flower lrke the unhappy prrncess was jealously guarded from any who wrshed to obtarn rt The heart broken chref was so affected by thrs great tragedy that he could not bear to look upon the thorny plant He commanded hrs warrrors to cut rt down and scatter rt to the four wrnds But thrs plant lrke the tragrc lrfe and death of thrs farr Indran Prrncess could not be so easrly oblrterated Each trny prece of the plant took root and soon the prrckly pear spread over all the great Southwest SHIRLEY BLOMEKE 9 Y ' 1 1 ' ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 Y 7 - . , . . , . . . . 1 ' 1 7 - 1 1 ' 1 ' . , - - 1 1 1 1 1 . . . - - Y .- Y 7 1 1 v . 1 - v , . 1
