Dt:-l3 9 t 5Li-256' Historic Landmarks of Austin On the top of one of Austin's many hills stands one of the shrines of Texas, St. David's Episcopal Church. Having been erected in 1859, it is one of the oldest churches in Austin and in central Texas. Bishop Polk, who visited the republic in 1841 and 1844, was ordained bishop of Arkansas and the Southwest. Bishop Gregg named the church in honor of a little church in Cheran, South Carolina, where he had served as rector before coming to Austin. For a long time the little church on the hill had a brick fioor, with the accompaniment of scorpions, centipedes, etc., and there are those who still recall unavoidable dis- turbances during prayer. The altar of the church was made of pine, but in later days, 1869 or '70, it was replaced by a wonderful carven altar of black walnut. This was carved and presented to the church by Mr. Nitschke, who did the work at night by lamplight. The altar in St. David's at the present day is a great white one, which stands a fitting memorial to pioneer families who held the banner of old St. David's aloft in its crucial days. There are many students among us today whose ancestors assisted in the building of this church and whose lives made much of the early history of Austin. The old Land Office was built in the years of 1856 and 1857, by an architect from Germany, who is said to have modeled it after an old German castle on the Rhine. The building is made of a fairly substantial grade of stone. The shutters on the windows are made of iron bars, and there are iron bars on the inside of the main entrance to protect the people in the building. The build- ing consists of three stories: two main ones and a small third one, used in the early days for an outlook and for shooting. There is also a secluded staircase in the building. The color of the Old Land Office, a picturesque pink, makes it delightful for artists to paint. William Sidney Porter CO. Henryj Wrote many of his interesting short stories in the Land Office, where he was employed as a draftsman. The Pease Mansion was the home of Governor Pease, it is on the Enfield road in the Enfield addition. The house was built by Mr. Shaw, who intended to use it for his home, but sorrow came into his life and he sold it to Mr. Pease. The rooms of this house are beautiful and spacious and so are the grounds, as the house is a typical southern colonial one. Governor Pease named his home Woodlawn. ROBERTA JACKSON. - Page 28
