f'e .f - 11 -,pt-nm l v ' R To the Graduates: It will not be long before you will re- ceive from the President of the Board of Education a diploma testifying that you have completed, honorably and well, the course of study prescribed for graduation from the Austin High School. You will enter life in a world of change and re-adjustment-a world of tumult, where old standards are literally being torn up by the roots-a world that needs desperately the sort of men and women it , . has been the pride of the Austin High l School to produce-Amen and women with clear heads and clean hearts, who think straight and live true, and who stand four-square for those things worth-while in life. May you be among the nobler workmen and bear an honorable part in build- ing out of the confusion of the present, a world truer, juster, and more beautiful than hitherto was ever known. Sincerely, . C Our Own High School A high school does not consist of buildings nor of equipment, but of person- alities and ideals, of memories and of hopes realized. The history of our high school is as interesting as that of any university. '- In the fall of eighteen hundred and eighty one, Austin High School began its eventful existence in the southeast corner of the the third Hoor of the build- ing now known as Pease School. At the close of the first month the enrollment totaled sixteen boys and thirty-one girls. The faculty consisted of two mem- bers, Mr. C. A. Bouchard and Miss Aurelia Brown. School was next held in the basement of the old First Baptist Church, on the site of the present new church, opposite the Governor's Mansion. When our own Miss Nina graduated, the school occupied the Temporary Capitol. Miss Harrison and Miss Fiegel also attended classes .for a while in this building, until, to the joy of some, the building burned and everybody got a holiday. School was soon resumed, however, in the second story of the build- ing now occupied by the White Shoe Shop on Sixth Street. Here the teachers had a hard time keeping everybody quiet. The seniors celebrated many a clandestine feast when Miss Mary Decherd's back was turned. Mr. Pearce was principal, as he was for the best part of twenty years. The only grades given were Satisfactory and Unsatisfactory. Mr. Pearce left upon the school the impress of a very powerful personality. It was during the last part of his service that the building on Ninth Street was constructed. When Miss Granger was a little Nine A, the Armistice was signed. She remembers the holiday that was announced and the bands playing on the Ave- nue. Mr. Stockard was principal. Many of the boys were in the army, some overseas. Military training was compulsory. In later years, during the period of greatest growth and progress, the school was guided by the late beloved Thomas Anderson Gullett, who literally laid down his life that his school might realize its fullest possibilities. He was succeeded by Mr. George H. Wells, a worthy successor. Our high school has not lacked friends. When John T. Allan died in 1889, he left his estate to the school. In 1917, Mr. A. J. Zilker gave the school an endowment of S100,000. To them and to all who have given themselves fully and freely when the old school called upon them, Austin High School owes her very soul, herself, but to none more than to Mr. Arthur Newell McCallum.
