L, eniord Bring Memories to Last Us Graduation, with its coveted diploma and stately cap, is the anticipated climax to a long, yet swift, school career. The oc- casion carries with it a poignant twinge of regret, as we look back through our school year with fond memories. Especially dear, such memories will be our only tie to those happy days. We will always treasure the memories of our first mixer, our last Homecoming, Senior Skip Day, and the prom. Among our treasured possessions we will find our research themes as well as many other reminders of our happy, but difficult, senior year. Through All the Years f I 5 . Victory, Victor Was Their Cry Our cheerleaders were important factors in the victories enjoyed by AHS teams. At pep assemblies, as well as at our games, AHS student viewed the familiar faces of Melvin Bailey, Susan Fischer, Julaine Greenameyer, Diane Hall, Jeanne King Sharon Madson and Patty Thatcher as they led the student body in its support of the football and basketball teams. Acrobatic cheerleading was attempted for the first time in several years under the able instruction of the cheerleading advisers, Miss Marjorie Priester and Mis Janet Townsend, Our gratitude and sincere thanks went to our cheerleaders for their part in establishing our fine athletic record. The thrill of competition, emphasized in each high sdlool con- test, involves more than the determination to win. Tireless hours of practice are required to perfect precision movements for a teamwork pattern. N When the whistle blows, each Packer dedicates his efforts for smooth teamwork. The tenseness of a tied score gives way to a surge of hidden strength necessary for scoring that winning point. TIM BAXTER SWEEPS around end while Larry Maus makes ready to throw a block. Packers Cop Undisputed Championship The Austin High School football team finished the 1958 football campaign undefeated, as well as cap- turing the Big Nine Championship. The key to success was a balanced team featuring a fine running and passing attack, together with a staunch defense. Throughout the year it was the pinpoint passing of quarterback Ron Anhorn, and elusive running of Terry Brown, Tim Baxter, Larry Diggins, Tom Folke- stad, and Lyle Cline which spearheaded this year's of- fense. Limiting a total of only 58 points being scored against the Packer defense, much credit is due to Larry and Terry Maus, who were selected to the All-State team this year as defensive tackles. Rochester 6, Austin 20 The season's opener found last year's co-holders of the Big Nine title clashing on a rainsoaked field at Austin. Rochester was no match for the spirited Packer Northfield O, Austin 13 At Northfield the Packer offense failed to function as it did against Rochester. Lyle Cline scored both Austin tallies, however, while the defense also played a superb game. The score was Austin 13, Northfield O. Albert Lea 13, Austin 28 Albert Lea tumbled 28-13 in an offensive display of power. Ron Anhorn's pinpoint passing and Larry Dig- gins fine running spearheaded the offense. Winona 6, Austin 33 A big, tough Winona outht fell 32-6 as Austin again showed offensive explosiveness and a rugged de- fense, led by Larry and Terry Maus. 58 Red Wing 6, Austin 26 Homecoming found Red Wing on the short end of the score, 26-6, as Austin, behind Ron Anhorn's pass- ing and a superb team defense, told the story. Owatonna 7, Austin 32 At Owatonna Austin played its finest game of the season, resulting in an explosive 32-7 victory. Mike Marienau scored on an 80-yard pass interception, Tim Baxter and Lyle Cline also scored on long runs. In the line, it again was Larry and Terry Maus and Jim Miller. Mankato 12, Austin 14 Mankato threw a scare into the Packer eleven, Aus- tin eventually winning after scoring two quick touch- downs. Faribault 7, Austin 34 In closing the season, Austin bowed out as the Big Nine Champions should, with a decisive 34-7 victory over Faribault. Coach Art Hass' Packers were rated first in the state by the St. Paul Pioneer Press following their outstanding SGCJSOTT. Consistency Marks Starting Five One of the reasons for the success of the Austin basketball tearn was the stability of the tive starters, as well as ot the reserves. All of the members were fine shots and fought hard when the chips were down. John Dean was considered as the team's best de- fensive rebounder, getting admirable support from Jerry Goodwin. Junior Clayton Reed fought hard and kept up the spirit. Tom Kezar was an excellent shot and a tough rebounder. Mike Marienau was also a time shot, as well as a good ball handler. Packers Again Cop Region One Championship Coach Ove Berven's Packers represented Region One in the state high school basketball tournament after defeating Albert Lea and Freeborn for the District Two title, then Caledonia and Winona for the regional crown. ln the first round of district play, Austin defeated Albert Lea by a stunning 73-37 score. The Packers featured outstanding defense to eliminate the only team in the Big Nine which had dealt them a loss in regular season play. The District Two basketball title remained the prop- erty of the Packers following an 81-53 verdict over Freeborn, A scrappy Caledonia quint also fell before the Scar- lets, as All-State guard Tom Kezar hit 32 points, lead- ing the Packers to an 86-7l victory. Austin then walked over a fighting Winona squad, 74-42, to represent Region One in state tourney play and to defend its state title won in '58. HOOK SHOT artist John Dean displays his perfected style against Caledonia in first round of regional play. Cale- donia's Gavin Grab at- tempts to block shot. The little Hawley team, unde- feated in 23 starts, were scrappy and dead shots, but the Packers' rebounding and shooting ability prayed fatal to the Nuggets. Wayzata slipped past the Packers 55-52 in a close game when Austin apparently had trouble settling down, Control of the game was gained by the Troians when they stole the ball twice in a row for two easy baskets, The Packers redeemed their honor by defeating a scrappy North St. Paul team 70-47 for a third place in the tournament. Austin guards Tom Kezar and Mike Marienau were named to the All-State tournament team for their fine shooting, accuracy and precision playing. Sponsors Homecoming Events Sponsoring Homecoming activities is one of the most important ac- tivities in which the Girls' Athletic Association engages. Committees are appointed to take charge of booster button sales, arrangements for the snake dance and bonfire, skit, and dance. The club, advised by Miss Mariorie Priester and Miss Janet Townsend and open to all girls from grades ten through twelve, meets every Thurs- day. Basketball, volleyball, and swimming are some of the sports in which the girls participate. Presiding over this year's rneetings are Maryan Williams, president, Mimi Kentta, vice-president, Karen Simon- son, secretary, and Georgia Sanford, treasurer, Big Nine Play Day, held in Mankato, was attended by local girls. Ten senior girls also attended Senior Play Day, hosted by Mankato State College. The faculty - with their encouragement, sympathy, and un- derstanding - guide us through every phase of learning. Guiding, inspiring, and molding the untrained youth into a skillful craftsman are the duties patiently undertaken by the devoted teacher. To help lead someone to a better understanding of himself - this is the blessing given to those who teach. Teaching and Learning dm A51.. -j' .
