P High school building , 1 before addition of new wing Progress and Expansion Mark Austin's Educational Growth A century ago a log house was erected, the first outward sign of Austin's role in formal- ized education, From a one room school, the system has progressed to a community con- sisting of nine grade schools, the high school, junior college, and the Area Vocational School. Our high school building has also exper- ienced change. From the original structure with its glass covered hot house and medieval columns, a sprawling three story building covering two blocks has emerged. As our physical plant has increased in size, our teaching staff, enrollment, and curriculum have also expanded. Emphasis has been Present high school building placed on meeting individual needs so that we students will be more adequately pre- pared to take our place in today's complex society. In order that we may further be- come well-rounded individuals more and more extra-curricular activities have been organized to challenge our varied outside interests. Thus, it follows that in such an atmosphere, we students, also, must change and mature. As confident seniors, we look back to the time when We were timid seventh or ninth graders bewildered by the newness of Austin High, and we realize how much we, too, have improved. 5

Year's Activities Recalled With Touch of Nostalgia Brick Walls, classrooms, gymnasium, ath- letic field-these things are part of any high school. Yet, for us they have a special sig- nificance because We associate them with Austin High. As we approach the end of an- other school year, We pause in retrospect. The year has had its supremely happy times, its cutting disappointments, and its run-of- the-mill days. Homecoming, the Christmas Concert, Sweethearts, the State Tournament -these were the big exciting moments. But we recall other moments, too-a favorite Austin area vocational building class, wearisome hours of sports practice, ap- titude tests, assemblies-the list goes on and on. And all these things have just a little more meaning because they happened while We were students at Austin High School. The year ends, the seniors graduate, our friends may move to another town, but our memories remain. Hoping to foster these re- collections of 1954-55 at Austin High School, the Austinian Staff has preserved in picture and word what we consider to be a repre- sentative record of our school life.
