Craven drills on needed fundamentals Season In Review ALBERT LEA A hard-fought game ending in a 6-6 dead- lock opened the 1954 football season for Aus- tin and Albert Lea. Although both teams lacked power offensively, defensively they showed spark and aggressiveness for coming games. Leading the strong forward wall for Austin were Larry Arnold, Sid Baldwin, and Ross Eckert. ST. PAUL WASHINGTON After trailing 12-7 at halftime, Austin ral- lied the second half to defeat their non-con- ference foe, St. Paul, Washington, by a score of 20-12. Line bulwarks charge ck Guintire, John Holgate, Duane Sellers, Bob Knowlfo s 1 , , ,M -,.-4. Fumbles plagued both teams frequently but progress was shown defensively by the Austin Packers. MANKATO Showing their sharpest performance during the season, Austin produced a surprising vic- tory over a highly favored Mankato club. Nothing but praise could be said about their superior playing in defeating the Scarlets 12-0. A fast charging forward line not only opened paths for runners Meyer, Arnold, and Plath, but knitted an almost impenetrable defense line. In more than one instance, the weaker either won decisive victories or gave the upper teams close games. Austin figured in one of these upsets by defeating a heavily favored Mankato club but turned right around and allowed a small Northfield team to hand them a defeat in the last game of the season. Potentially the Packers weren't as strong as previous teams. Injuries played an effec- tive part in weakening the squad.
