EDUCATIGN FoR DEMCCRACY iii' Foreword HERE are 20,000,000 high school gradu- ates in the United Statesnow with the prospects of increased numbers in the next few years to come. The way these gradu- ates feel about democracy and the way they act on their feelings will assume an import- ance almost beyond exaggeration in the com- ing life of the country. Austin High School is one of the schools seriously concerned with preserving democracy, and in widespread ed- ucation that is teaching us, the individuals, the responsibilities we have to shoulder in order to enjoy the rights and privileges of democratic education. The l94l Austinian aims to show that we, the students of Aus- tin High School, through our studies, activi- ties, and play realize that democracy is a hard fact worthy of desperate defense. xp D if 5' H H Q 'L e W r if :gg 1. T0 HONCDR L EADER N JANUARY 27 at 6 o'clock in the evening in the new cafeteria, a dinner was given to hon- or Superintendent S. T. Neveln upon the completion of his twentieth year as head of the Austin public schools. Over two hundred administrators, present board members, and all past board members who have served with Superintendent Neveln, were present. Now in his twenty-first year, Mr. Neveln can look back to an enviable record as an ed- ucator, administrator, and builder. Coming in l92O from Le Mars, Iowa, where he had been superintendent, he entered a new building here in Austin, and as this new building proved inadequate with the growth of enrollment through the years, he, together with the school board, took upon himself the tremendous task of planning and supervising the execution of the beautiful present structure which covers two square blocks, and is, indeed, a monument and tribute to Mr. Neveln. Defense education in Austin has been very important to this American educational leader, and in a supervisory capacity, Mr. Neveln has worked hard to attain for Austin the reputa- tion of ranking second to the cities, St. Paul. Minneapolis, and Duluth, in a state rating of defense educational programs. This speaks very well for the ability, patriotism, and far- sightedness of the man who is doing so much to make the Austin public schools truly insti- tutions in which education for democracy is daily being carried out. fD:Qj
