T0 HONCDR L EADER N JANUARY 27 at 6 o'clock in the evening in the new cafeteria, a dinner was given to hon- or Superintendent S. T. Neveln upon the completion of his twentieth year as head of the Austin public schools. Over two hundred administrators, present board members, and all past board members who have served with Superintendent Neveln, were present. Now in his twenty-first year, Mr. Neveln can look back to an enviable record as an ed- ucator, administrator, and builder. Coming in l92O from Le Mars, Iowa, where he had been superintendent, he entered a new building here in Austin, and as this new building proved inadequate with the growth of enrollment through the years, he, together with the school board, took upon himself the tremendous task of planning and supervising the execution of the beautiful present structure which covers two square blocks, and is, indeed, a monument and tribute to Mr. Neveln. Defense education in Austin has been very important to this American educational leader, and in a supervisory capacity, Mr. Neveln has worked hard to attain for Austin the reputa- tion of ranking second to the cities, St. Paul. Minneapolis, and Duluth, in a state rating of defense educational programs. This speaks very well for the ability, patriotism, and far- sightedness of the man who is doing so much to make the Austin public schools truly insti- tutions in which education for democracy is daily being carried out. fD:Qj
