I WWW EDUCATIGN FoR DEMCCRACY iii' Foreword HERE are 20,000,000 high school gradu- ates in the United Statesnow with the prospects of increased numbers in the next few years to come. The way these gradu- ates feel about democracy and the way they act on their feelings will assume an import- ance almost beyond exaggeration in the com- ing life of the country. Austin High School is one of the schools seriously concerned with preserving democracy, and in widespread ed- ucation that is teaching us, the individuals, the responsibilities we have to shoulder in order to enjoy the rights and privileges of democratic education. The l94l Austinian aims to show that we, the students of Aus- tin High School, through our studies, activi- ties, and play realize that democracy is a hard fact worthy of desperate defense. xp D if 5' H H Q 'L e W r if :gg 1. SIJORTSIYIANSHIIJ EIYIEODIED IN ATHLETICS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART Ol: TRUE DEMOCRACY T0 HONCDR L EADER N JANUARY 27 at 6 o'clock in the evening in the new cafeteria, a dinner was given to hon- or Superintendent S. T. Neveln upon the completion of his twentieth year as head of the Austin public schools. Over two hundred administrators, present board members, and all past board members who have served with Superintendent Neveln, were present. Now in his twenty-first year, Mr. Neveln can look back to an enviable record as an ed- ucator, administrator, and builder. Coming in l92O from Le Mars, Iowa, where he had been superintendent, he entered a new building here in Austin, and as this new building proved inadequate with the growth of enrollment through the years, he, together with the school board, took upon himself the tremendous task of planning and supervising the execution of the beautiful present structure which covers two square blocks, and is, indeed, a monument and tribute to Mr. Neveln. Defense education in Austin has been very important to this American educational leader, and in a supervisory capacity, Mr. Neveln has worked hard to attain for Austin the reputa- tion of ranking second to the cities, St. Paul. Minneapolis, and Duluth, in a state rating of defense educational programs. This speaks very well for the ability, patriotism, and far- sightedness of the man who is doing so much to make the Austin public schools truly insti- tutions in which education for democracy is daily being carried out. fD:Qj Rxxcisiiii, Diftoiuzs GARDNER Rachel Delores Gardner who was a member of the faculty of the Austin High School since September l927, died, March lO, at her home in St. Peter. During these fourteen years she made a distinct contribution to the school, and it is fitting that we should consider her Hne characteristics and pay a tribute to her outstanding qualities of mind and soul. Miss Gardner loved her work and her pupils. She gave them her sympathy, her under- standing. and devotion. She inspired and encouraged them and was ambitious for them als ways. Miss Gardner was a born teacher. She left her impressions upon her associates. her students. and upon the school. She will not soon be forgotten. Through friendiy doors we enter upon our education for de- mocracy in surroundings that are simpie, spacious, impressive and modern in every detail of appointment and equipment IAN tvvo-way sound system connects every room in the building with the central office-- Miss Doris Neveln is shown at the control panel---principal Gustafson broadcasts an- nouncements daily. .Q QD IE -r k a , 3 5 rf , WF -ww f' mfg: , 'Fw 12 W, ,V W :km , 5 .HAR .,.,, ., ,411 -3, fi L W--M - .m A. , WJ, M si? Each member of the journalism class holds a position on the staff. To become a member of the Quill and Scroll, international journalistic honor society for high school journalists, a student must be in the upper one-third of his class scholastically. The top picture presents the active members of this organization in our high school, Malcing the Wheels Go 'Round An accurate portrayal of the school year is given by the yearbook which presents news of the school, administration, faculty, classes, clubs, athletics, and a picture of every student in the school in the class section. In conjunction with the Junior Friendship Club, the mothers were entertained at the annual Mother-Daughter ban- quet. The Junior Club helps junior girls to become acquainted and orientated to high school life. Officers of the Senior Friendship Club are: Shirley Armstrong, president: Betty Brown, vice-president: Elizabeth Grise, secretary: and Ruth Liebenstein, treasurer. Miss Lena B. Grinley is the Senior Club adviser. Junior Club oflicers are: Elaine Alderson, president: Shirley Nicholsen, vice president: Audrey Erickson. secretary: and Betty Hansen, treasurer. Miss Katharine Meier and Florence Larson are the advisers. 63 Leisure Moments As part ol' the plan lor education for democracy, students are urged to take part in any extra curricular activities that interest them. This teaches them to work and play harmonious- ly with their fellow students. and. in turn, teaches better citizenship in their community con- tacts. Among the many aims of such an organization are the following: to give students a more human and fundamental approach to European civili- zation, to show the importance of living languages of Europe, to point out how a foreign g expresses the simple, warm, intimate emotions of t langua YC often he human soul, to give an understanding of the relationship of languages, and to appreciate the customs of other coun- tries and their relation to our own America. The oflicers of the club were: Mary Kathryn Dunlap, president: Ray Jensen. vice presi- dent, and Marjorie Nelson, secretary-treasurer. The year's program included an initiation program, a French movie, a banquet. the raising of money for the club room, a Christmas supper, a treasure hunt, and a Parents' tea. ew 4 , 'nwwf ' I 'S -' tears'--.., h- n wish Honor Society Character, leadership. and service constitute the basis for judgme . , . Brains and Brawn On the Gridiron Austin remained undefeated in football this year until they met the powerful Fair- mont team. They lost one game out of nine, but had to forfeit a number of games because of Dee Morgan, one of the players, being over-age. The schedule was as follows: Austin O e , , St, Paul Central 0 Austin 20 L, L Owatonna 7 Austin 34 , , L , Rochester O Austin 27 e Charles City, Iowa O Austin 20 7 7 , , ,L Faribault 14 Austin 25 L Winona 6 Austin 7 Mankato O Austin 13 H Fairmont 18 Austin 13 ,e e, e, , Albert Lea 6 A number of the Scarlets made the con- ference team, and Louis Vogel and Knute Knutson placed on the first and third teams, respectively, The picture on page 82 was snapped when Austin met the conference leaders, Mankato. ln the picture, a number of Austin players are overhauling a Mankato ball-carrier. The most outstanding game of the season was with Faribault. Austin won 18 to 13, but they had to make two touchdowns in the last couple of minutes to win. There are a number of players graduating this year that held down prominent posi- tions on the team. Those graduating are Lewis Vogel, John Peterson, Warren Rector, Ernest Cherney, Lewis Neubauer, George Holt, Dick Peterson, Louis Gunderson, Dave Christianson, Lowell and Lyle Einhaus, Knute Knutson, Owen Berg, Clyde Seivers and Clifton McCamy. The coaches, Red Hastings and John Butorac, did a swell job of turning out a winning team, The total number of points acquired during the season-Austin 159, and opponents 61h-tell a pretty good story of the games as a whole.
